ErikParticipantJan – I’ve had jobs in my youth where that could’ve been the job description…
Needed: Big ox for heavy manual labor.

January 27, 2009 at 2:11 am #656166
JanSParticipantI just started chuckling..Zenguy said “Happy New Year from a dragon” ….If I applied that to me, I’d have to say “Happy New Year from a pig” – lol…

JayDeeParticipantWell, me, George Clooney, and the Prez are oxen, and actually born in the same year. Which makes me proud when they say Barack Obama is too young to be President.

From a website listing the characteristics of those born in the year of the Ox: They are “…stable, strong, dutiful, reliable, tenacious, practical, industrious, determined, honest, loyal, sincere, persevering and down to earth and tolerant. They can sometimes be lonely but they form firm bonds with home and family. The Ox people cherish their private lives and are not usually very adventurous. They can be loners. They know the way to succeed is by a slow, steady, sustained effort. Ox people are great traditionalists, they like the familiar.

Oddly enough this horoscope designation fits me better than the traditional Western one.

ellenaterMemberI am also a pig :( I prefer to be referred to by the more dignified. ‘boar’. ;)
January 28, 2009 at 1:06 am #656173
JoBParticipantellenator..
i can see why you would prefer boar to pig… as long as it is spelled correctly:)
January 28, 2009 at 1:33 am #656174
flowerpetalMemberMe snake. I like to exterminate rodents. Good snake. I’m sure there are other virtuous characteristics.

alki_2008ParticipantNot to rain on any Capricorn’s or Aquarian’s parade, but just a note that the lunar zodiacs are based on the lunar cycle – so folks with birthdays between 1/1 and late-Jan or mid-Feb (depending on the year) could be the lunar zodiac of the preceding year.
For example, someone born on Jan 10th 2009 would be a Rat (not an Ox). Just throwing it out there in case anyone wasn’t aware. :)
January 28, 2009 at 1:57 am #656176
ErikParticipantflower – my gf is a snake too. Oxen and snake are very compatible in the chinese zodiac.
According to the wiki:
Persons born under the sign of the snake are the most powerful in the year of the Ox.
January 28, 2009 at 2:02 am #656177
ErikParticipantPeople born within these date ranges can be said to have been born in the year of the Ox, while also bearing the following elemental sign:
19 February 1901 – 7 February 1902: Metal Ox
6 February 1913 – 25 January 1914: Water Ox
25 January 1925 – 12 February 1926: Wood Ox
11 February 1937 – 30 January 1938: Fire Ox
29 January 1949 – 16 February 1950: Earth Ox
15 February 1961 – 4 February 1962: Metal Ox
3 February 1973 – 22 January 1974: Water Ox
20 February 1985 – 8 February 1986: Wood Ox
7 February 1997 – 28 January 1998: Fire Ox
26 January 2009 – 14 February 2010: Earth Ox
January 28, 2009 at 3:24 am #656178
JayDeeParticipantThis is a bummer, I am not a Gemini (by temperament) and I am really not an Ox (well, according to birth date). Dang NPR! They got my hopes up that maybe this was my right sign after all these years (well, not that many years…AARP hasn’t sent me The Letter yet…).

Erik: Is a blue Ox a water Ox?
January 28, 2009 at 4:41 am #656179
ErikParticipantJayDee – I’m a Metal Ox having been born one month after Barack in 61′.
The two strong colors for Ox are yellow and blue, so perhaps that’s why I kept finding blue oxen?
Each of the 12 animals has 5 different colors that go with the appropriate element:
Metal White
Water Black
Wood Green
Fire Red
Earth Brown
So this is the Brown Earth Oxen year
