addParticipantWe favor Azuma over Mashiko for sushi. The ambience isn’t quite as hip but the food is very fresh, reasonably priced, and the service is always very welcoming and friendly! Plus, you can always get a seat.

elgregoMemberI prefer Azuma over Mashiko too, if only because it’s much more affordable and still good. I enjoyed Mashiko, but my wallet didn’t.
Luna Park is my hands-down favorite in West Seattle. Vanilla shakes and turkey club sammiches. Mmmmm.
July 4, 2008 at 11:21 pm #625886
barbMemberelgrego, that is definitely a problem with Mashikos, that is why I only go there once in a great while.
July 4, 2008 at 11:22 pm #625887
barbMembercharlabob I hope you enjoy Mashikos, it is expensive, but worth it for a night of very good sushi.

mellaw6565MemberWhen it comes to the difference between Azumas and Mashiko’s – I can only say one thing: You get what you pay for. There’s a huge difference for a reason!

MagpieParticipantOne of my coworkers recently had a bad experience at Endolyne Joe’s..she had a piece of metal in her hamburger. Turned out, it was from the brush that they clean the grill with. You would have thought that they would have comped her meal..instead, gave them all dessert. They could have killed her. I thought she was much too nice about it. Certainly made me think that I would not go there again. Too dangerous.
I love Talarico’s happy hour…where can you get such a huge piece of pizza for three fifty?
Also, love the crab cakes on happy hour at west 5..yum..I’m a happy hour kind of person.
Recently had the rissoto at Shadowland and found it fabulous and a good value.

elgregoMemberEndolyne Joe’s just kinda disappoints when I go. Even their breakfasts are bland, and it’s a little too overpriced. While I haven’t had a bad experience there, I haven’t ever had a good one either. It’s a shame, as it seems like the place has so much potential to be a great neighborhood diner. I won’t be going back.

MargLMemberMy husband and I are pretty sure Chow Foods uses Endolyne Joe’s as a training camp for their new employees. Husband calls it their “farm team”. We’ve been there quite a few times and either the service is incredibly slow, or the food is cold or so-so. We sooo want to like the place but probably won’t be back again. It -is- disappointing.
We went to Charlestown Cafe today (yay!) Fast service, good food – if only that’s what Endolyne was like!

celeste17ParticipantAll of these places are really good. But if you are looking for a good meal that is reasonably priced and is your everyday food I say the Chelan Cafe under the bridge. The soup is hand made every day on Thursday nights they have prime rib. There salads are really good and fresh. The hamburgers are really good. This cafe has been around a long time and in the 70’s early 80’s when the port was doing some remodeling to accommodate the ships many of the longshore workers protested the cafe being torn down. The Port not only saved the cafe from the wreaking ball they helped remodel it. So if you want a good simple meal try the Chelan. They are only open for breakfast on the weekend. But Monday thru Friday full menu.

elgregoMemberWhere is the Chelan? Under the bridge near Luna Park?
July 5, 2008 at 12:52 pm #625895
barbMemberceleste we love the Chelan, and one of my reasons for not mentioning it was purely selfishness. I like going and having a minimal wait time for breakfast, and on Thursday nights for Prime Rib being able to just walk in and sit down. But since the cat is out of the bag, I will second the recommendation for the Chelan.

miwsParticipantelgrego, the Chelan is underneath the West Seattle Bridge, just about where the older section of the West Seattle “Expressway” hooks up to the highrise.
.
Another way to put it into perspective, is that it’s pretty much across, underneath the bridge, from the Fire Station.

guidosmomMemberWe LOVE Royal India, Lee’s Asian, and Pailan Thai. :) Royal India is great because their food is wonderful and they don’t charge a corkage fee if you bring your own wine.

elisekloterMemberDoes anyone know when the Bohemian is going to open? We met the owners at the West Seattle Helpline Benefit, and thought they were going to open in June. Can’t find a website for them, tho.
I have to put a vote in for Kamei for sushi…none of the hype or bad service of Mashiko. It’s family run, inexpensive and good!

JPParticipantI saw a sign on California Ave, somewhere between Admiral and Charlestown when I was walking.I just happened to glance, so I’m not sure. But it’s on the west side of the street.

last I heard from the [chef], was the end of June, but the city perhaps isn’t cooperating…

miwsParticipant“…..but the city perhaps isn’t cooperating…”
City: “We’re sorry, your request to establish a restaurant has been denied. There is already a proliferation of restaurants in West Seattle, and way to few townhouses. Not only is this what Weat Seattle NEEDS, it’s what it’s residents WANT. Fewer restaurants, and many more townhouses.” :P

JanSParticipantlol..Mike..actually, he said that the delay was in it’s inspections, etc…they just drag their feet, I guess. Besides, you know we just love to eat here ;-)

celeste17Participantthe Chelan is located at 26 and Spokane. You go under the bridge and just before you go up the ramp to the lower bridge or you go down West Marginal Way you will see the building. They are really popular for breakfast.

BayouMemberI think all of my favs have been mentioned but I will chime in none the less: Ephesus, Elliot Bay Brewery, Mashiko, Luna Park, Buddha Ruksa, Jaks
I’m surprised that so many have had bad experiences at Endolyne’s. I have always had good service there and have gotten to know a few of the staff. I especially enjoy their fried chicken or prawn tacos.
I have not been to Chelan or the Riverhouse yet but my interest is certainly peaked… Any other must try suggestions?

WSMemberI haven’t seen this listed yet, but Ama Ama is wonderful. Such a great addition to West Seattle.

flowerpetalMemberPack a big appetite and go to Kokoras Greek restaurant in the Morgan Junction (across from Beveridge Place Pub). It is a small space and you might have to wait for a table but well worth it. And you could of course cross the street to BPP for beverage while waiting.

villagegreenMemberI think I agree with pretty much everyone. I’ll give one more shoutout to Skylark. If you have a baby, it’s a great alternative to breakfast at Easy Street (much easier to get a table and the food is a little better). I think it’s family friendly till 9pm at night.

inactiveMemberSomeone mentioned a Vietnamese place in White Center. I know I like Banh 88 – so much so I’ve been there twice in the past week. :)
I’ve only been there for lunch, but I thought it was really reasonably priced and, so far, tres bien. Last time I was there I had very nice lemongrass tofu and before that, beef salad. They’ve got an extensive sandwich list, I noticed. (That’s banh mi, I learned :)).
The vibe of the tiny place is sweet and elegant Asian bistro. The owners (Nicky is the wife/owner) were terrific too.
Good find! It’s tucked under a bower of street trees across from the Triangle produce stand. I’ve driven by there a million times and just now discovered Banh 88! Next time I think I’ll go there, then walk across Roxbury and visit Full Tilt for coconut ice cream!
