After Keri did the Westside Pharmacy story (thanks again to Celeste for the tip), I realized that I may have missed a lead line like “West Seattle’s last independent pharmacy closing.”

    Is there one I’m missing?

Even in “just” the 18 years we’ve been here, I’ve seen Olson’s close – it was where the Morgan Junction Starbucks is now – and Morton’s in The Junction, now Pharmaca – and there was one in the building where the Alki Bakery is now. I think that’s it though. Is there an indy pharmacy I’m forgetting somewhere? And anything else that was open for decades, that I’m forgetting to mention?

There was a pharmacy where Easy Street is, at California and Alaska, and two in Admiral, one where Wells Fargo Bank is now, and one where the flower shop is on California and Admiral, later moved to where Alki Bike and Board. Sheppard’s and Rothchild’s. Sheppard’s had a great logo that was on every pill bottle. Store was open for over 2 decades. Legend has it that the soda fountains in the drug stores were quite good.

Thanks, Gina! I can certainly imagine those stores there.

Patrick’s long-gone parents ran a drugstore for a while and he has vivid memories of that aspect of the drugstore business. To contrast, I spent some formative years in Los Angeles and remember chain drugstores like Sav-On, Thrifty and Rexall, even 40 years ago!
