HmcauleyMemberHi we are looking for pest control in the West Seattle area. Someone who is reliable and cost efficient. Our home has been invaded with sugar ants!

tttParticipant3 years ago we had little, tiny black ants in our basement. We called evergreen pest service. Last spring they came back and I put a few fresh sprigs of mint where they seemed to be entering the house and they left within a few hours. We also planted mint in the contained beds next to our house, on one side. It is a natural ant deterrent.

anonymeParticipantMint reputedly repels rodents as well. I keep mint tea bags in my cupboards.
As for pest control, John with Adept Pest is the guy to call. Highest reviewed on the WSB. In the meantime, scrub the area where the ants are coming in with Borax. You need to mask/destroy their trail.

trickycooljParticipantI have had the best luck with the clear gel in a syringe applicator in the green box at Home Depot, it’s marked for Ants and Roaches. Tried two other products that just fed them and brought more in the house. I just put a dot at each corner of my front door (there was a big hill in the front yard about 10 feet away), at the corners of where my stairs meet the floor and a dot right at the spot where I could see them going in the crack between the floor and stair where the carpet met the hardwood. That was last April, haven’t had an ant since. Oddly a friend who visited from Walla Walla last week said her house got the same annoying ants a lot and she said get the green package with the syringe looking thingy to me before I told her it was the one I used! She has a dog and made sure to put the dots of gel above where he could reach, their ants came in a kitchen window to the countertop so it was well out of doggie’s reach. Might not be ideal if you have little kids or pets that can reach the area of entry but that stuff worked perfectly if you don’t!

sbreParticipantThe mint application does work to make them want to move away, however they will sometimes move somewhere else and again find a way into your home.
Another home remedy to ‘do them in’ is to bring a large pan of water to a heavy-boil then add two cups of salt and SLOWLY pour over the known site(s). The hot water kills the living ants, the salt will cover the eggs of the un-born and do them in.
At times a second application is necessary.
Please refrain from responding to educate me to the necessity of ants in our world (I am fully aware and appreciate their vital role in our eco-system) and how cruel this action is, but if they insist on returning after my encouragement to pursued them to leave, then I’ve got to protect the human living space.
Peace…

kurly212ParticipantI got ant baits at Home Depot early this summer. They worked amazingly well. There was a steady stream of sugar ants for maybe 18 hours (fascinating to watch, actually) and I haven’t seen any since.

trickycooljParticipantOh man those Terro ones were like Old Country Buffet but never got rid of them at my place, it was a steady stream for two weeks before I gave up on them. If the Terro don’t work the green package with the syringe applicator is the way to go. Plus I always let spiders be if they’re in the house, not sure if they eat ants but figure they’re earning their keep as long as they stay out of my immediate reach.

esheymcParticipantI also recommend the terro traps. They work if the problem is fairly new. If they are in your walls, you may need to hire folks to bomb the walls. I can tell you, from my experience, that once they infest the walls, it may be a life long problem and regular maintenance is needed whether you do it yourself or pay someone. From what I now understand, WS has become a huge anthill and with all of the development, it has left them fewer places to hide. Also, I loathe ants. Odorous house ants specifically, they are devil ants and I too keep spiders around hoping they devour their stinky little bodies.

Ms. SparklesParticipantI’ve had success with a paste made from water and cinnamon – it looks like poo smeared on your walls, but it worked when no amount of spraying by a professional did.
