normanbell37MemberHi all!
I posted a month or two back asking “How safe is WS?” and received over 60 responses (!) Thank you for all your great feedback!
Now things have worked out with my work situation to allow me, my wife and daughter to move to WS in August. Only thing is, at least so far, there’s very little out there to look at!
I know the rental market is super tight, and WS is a popular place to live, so does anyone have any tips for me for looking for a house or apartment to rent, beyond “look on Craigslist”?
We look on CL, Hotpads and Zillow. Any other suggestions of websites to look at? Would people recommend just driving around looking for “for rent” signs?
Any tips – or success stories about how you found your place – would be appreciated, as would any tips about specific places you know about.
Thanks!
Norman
(btw: we’re looking for a house or apt, 2+BR,$1,500 or less.)

sbreParticipantTry Seattlerentals(.)com.
I have a few rental properties, send me an e-mail and lets chat: swimbikeruneat-at-comcast(.)net

dobroParticipantI would concur that driving around the areas you’d like to consider and looking for signs would be a good thing. I’ve seen a lot of for rent signs lately and it could well be that those people are not listing their property.

trickycooljParticipantI typically suggest Padmapper but I guess Craigslist gave them a cease and desist for cross posting listings. It still maps out other listings and is helpful for getting an idea of location. Not sure about West Seattle, but when I lived in the north end some of the ads had really strange ideas about where Green Lake was to get ad hits, Padmapper made it obvious when they were really miles away!

Talaki34ParticipantIf things don’t workout with sbre, I found 14 rentals that are in the ballpark (Money) on Hotpads.com
The sight is kind of hard to use, you have to keep scrolling otherwise you miss whole parts of WS.
Since I was a little bored at 0645 this morning, I copied and saved them. Let me know if you are interested.
Just be aware I don’t know how often they update the site.
Good Luck and Welcome!!!!!

YeloRoseMemberThe house at 4817 42nd Ave SW has a sign out for rent. It doesn’t list the price, though.

theeParticipant4135 36th SW is for rent. Across from Buddah Ruksa.

DannyQMemberIt is obvious that we all have the luxury of looking online for just about anything we want, especially when we want to cure our curiosity, but when your dealing with looking for a house/apartment I would highly recommend doing it the old fashion way. Driving around and checking out the neighborhood and quality of the places.
As much as I am in love with West Seattle, there are always “those” neighborhoods or even streets that have their share of shadiness.
Pictures, videos, and words from the landlords will generally never point out the negatives. You should always be the only judge of that.

AlkiKmacParticipantYou’re looking at the perfect time. Tenants have until the 11th of this month to give notice if they’re moving out. So each day, more and more units will be available for rent for Aug. 1. I have access to 27 buildings in West Seattle and I’d be happy to assist you if you don’t have pets. Let me know how to contact you privately.

AlkiKmacParticipantI just emailed you. Let me know if you didn’t get it.

jissyParticipantNorman: Have seen a couple nice SFH’s since you posted…. I have no idea of the details as far as cost or bedrooms etc…. but here’s the info. They are both listed by professional management companies and in very nice neighborhoods with great curb appeal.
Prestige Rental Management, 41st or 42nd and Austin, 206-932-8200. Also the 7400 block of California on Gatewood Hill, http://www.aroundtheclockinc.com or 253-852-3000.
You could also try Windermere property rentals at http://www.windermereseattlepm.com I saw a really nice property by them but it was very pricey — looks like they might have some others in West Seattle though.
I’ll post more as I see them driving around. Are you looking for a specific area/neighborhood?
July 7, 2012 at 11:14 pm #762986
PDieterParticipantObviously my MIL apartment isn’t what you’re looking for but incase someone else wants a 1 bdrm.
July 8, 2012 at 12:19 am #762987
kgdlgParticipantJust my two cents that there are often rental signs in our hood – gatewood hill – and I believe the prices are reasonable around what you want. Houses here tend to be tidy and small – we live in a two bed one bath 1400 sq feet but perfect for a small fam, in our opinion. And a great safe neighborhood with a good school.

normanbell37MemberJissy – thanks for the tips. We’re gonna take the day off and enjoy the sun, but will be back pounding the virtual pavement this week, so we’ll check out the places you mention. Kgdlg, we’ll check out gatewood hill, thanks. We’ve got a couple leads, but nothing final, so please keep those tips coming! Thanks! (btw we’re targeting Genesee, N Admiral, Gatewood, Fauntleroy, but we’re open to any nice place…)
July 10, 2012 at 12:09 am #762989
jissyParticipantNorman — saw another today, corner of California Avenue and SW Southern street… yard needs a good mowing, but very cute/good curb appeal. Sign is by Prestige Rental Management and # is 206-932-8200. I’ll keep posting until you tell me otherwise.
July 10, 2012 at 3:20 am #762990
jissyParticipantAnd another, 5600 block of 48th Avenue SW, right as it becomes Erskine. By Cayce & Gain management, 206-932-1090. Fairly big house, new construction in I think the last 3 years.
July 24, 2012 at 3:03 am #762991
jissyParticipantNorman — not sure if you’ve found anything, but I saw a couple places on 49th Avenue SW yesterday, one is by Cayce & Gain, very nice house sitting on the bluff, full views (I have no idea the price but think it’s prob. spendy)…. believe it was the 55__ block. There was another just 1-2 blocks from that one but I’m sorry, I don’t recall the management company on that one…. figure if you’re in the area scoping things out you could drive by.

blessedmamaMemberI would highly recommend CityWatch Apartments, wonderful staff, great apartments, affordable rents, and you can’t beat the location (walking distance to California Ave and grocery stores). I wouldn’t know if they have any vacancies but I do know that they are very pet friendly (just incase you decide to get a pet). Definitely worth checking out.

normanbell37MemberHi everyone – wanted to follow up and say thanks so much for all your help. I’m happy to say, thanks to this very post, my wife, daughter and I were able to find a house to rent for a reasonable price and in a neighborhood we like. We moved in last Wednesday! We’re excited to be new West Seattleites, and look forward to getting involved in the community. See you all on WSB and in WS!
