We need to dig a 17 ft long, 2 ft. deep, 2 ft wide trench in our backyard for planting bamboo. We were thinking of hiring some day laborers from Millionaire’s Club or similar place – what would be a reasonable price to pay them for digging the trench? I don’t want to hire a professional landscaper, just looking for some labor help and not sure what the casual rate is – Thanks.

    Hi Mellaw,

I have used the Millionair club several times and they set the price. It should be 9.00-12.00 an hour. I have never paid more then 9.00 an hour. You have to guarantee 4 hours and have to provide a meal. I have had very good luck using this service and it feels good to know that I have helped someone out. And most of the time if you need that person for more then one day you just arrange with the worker to come back again. Good Luck.

Calculate the rental price of a trencher with a wide cut, the cost of your time for a day, and the transports of the rental trencher back and forth and you can pay those shovel wielders quite handsomely and feel like you are getting the better end of the deal.

I have laid water lines both ways by myself and I am happy to pay top dollar for strong shovel work.

The 2′ wide part is where manual shovel work beats technology unless you are going to rent a bucket loader.
