yarncoreMemberI’ve done yoga in the past, for instance in my late teens I went to a small class in a woman’s converted garage and later in my twenties I went to classes at a gym I belonged to that took place in an office space. Always very low key and easy, although that may be more because of my youth and the good shape I was in at the time. Now, though, in my thirties, I found myself terrified of going to my first power yoga class at Spira. What if I couldn’t do it? What if I’m too out of shape? But Spira is just down the street and from the sounds of the reviews here, I decided to check my apprehension and just do it.
I am SO GLAD I did. This is a leave your ego at the door kind of yoga studio. The intro class is very accessible to those new to yoga or completely out of practice. I love that there are no mirrors (I did not enjoy my recent try at a local Bikram studio, I do not need to seem myself struggling and sweating buckets). Everyone there was inviting from the get go. Power yoga is definitely much more strenuous of a workout than what I have done in the past, but it is easy to modify for your level and you never feel any pressure to do more than what you can do that day. By the end I always feel a great sense of peace and accomplishment. Oh, and also sweaty and sore, but in a good way!
I’ve only been going for about 3 weeks now and I’m completely hooked. What started out as me perhaps trying out 1-2 times a week is now not seeming like enough. I want to go 3 times at least, if not 4. I even found myself getting up at 5:45 in the morning on a day off to go to a 6 am class just because I had to miss the intro class that evening. Never in my life have I gotten up in the morning to exercise, it’s just unheard of for me. This place makes me want to exercise!
Dora is very insightful, funny, helpful and knowledgeable. It is a joy to be in her classes and to hear all her stories and wisdom. I have also been to classes with Brenda, Valerie and Susie and they are amazing teachers as well. I feel like I’ve found my place, and it feels really healthy.
