waterworldParticipantI don’t own any dogs presently, but what bugs me about all this is all the conclusions being drawn and presented here about a person who is unrepresented, namely the woman whose dog was initially unleashed, but subsequently leashed after JoB hollered at her.
From reading the posts, I get only one side of this story, and it is rather more laden with presumptions than with facts. We can be assured she lives in a better area of town, we should suspect she would have behaved better on a public street than she did in the park; she walked agressively, she was deliberately provacative, she charged at JoB and her dogs, she put herself as close to them as she could.
On the factual side, what I gleaned at first from the posts was that the woman was on a trail while JoB and her dogs were in a clearing, but later JoB said that the woman was walking through the clearing and could have gone around JoB and her dogs, which suggests she wasn’t on a trial. I don’t know which it is. Oh, and she said have a nice day when she went by.
Other words used to help us understand the woman include stupid, arrogant, and malicious — for walking her dogs in a public park, putting her dog on a leash after being hollered at from across a clearing, and allegedly walking within 17 feet of JoB.
Seems like both dog owners were in violation of the leash laws, and at best neither of them is very considerate.

JoBParticipantok.. i dont’ seem to be feeling so philosophical any longer so… one last attempt at clarity.
i was playing with my dogs in a clearing… at the end of which the dogs were moved to leave a little gift… on opposite sides of me with fully extended leashes.
as the dogs were leaving their gift, i looked up and saw a couple of people enter the edge of the clearing with their unleashed dogs… about half a city block away from me.
they weren’t headed in my direction.. in fact they were loitering at the edge of the clearing playing with their dogs.
I admit that i was indulging in risky behavior. i was letting my dogs play leashed in the middle of the clearing where i could clearly see at least a half block’s length all around me… it was a calculated risk, but it was a risk…
However, let me repeat, my dogs were leashed.. and i was in the middle of the clearing where i could easily see and react to any threat to their safety… including but not limited to runners… dogs off leash… bikers.. and frisbee playing kids… though the rain, the time of day and the fact that the clearing was pretty much surrounded by woods cut the odds of encountering any but the most dedicated..
when i saw the couple and their unleashed dogs, i called to them to leash their dogs.. that mine weren’t dog friendly..
the man called his dogs to leash them while i moved towards one dog to pick up the poo…
I straightened and had my hand full of one dog’s bagged poo when I saw the woman moving rapidly towards me with her dog… and i yelled again that the dogs were not dog friendly.
those of you who bag poo while walking a dog will know that it is impossible to do so with a retractable leash in both hands so at that point i had both retractable leashes in one hand with bagged poo in the other.
the woman moved at a speed walking speed directly at me with her dog pulled to her side…
My dogs were completely uninterested in the woman and her dog and were off to the side not quite at at the end of their leashes at that point until they saw her and the dog moving in an aggressive manner directly at them.
my challenge… move the leashes so that they were in two hands… call the dogs who had now noticed a woman and a dog charging rapidly right at them and had started running diagonally at full speed towards them… stop them in their tracks… reel both leashes in… and yell at her one more time asking her to please stop, my dogs were not dog friendly…
I was able to successfully do that quickly enough that with the assistance of the other dog who quickly moved back out of the lead dog’s way, the dogs were not able to reach her and i was able to both retract the leashes and move out of the way of the woman quickly enough that even as she kept moving towards me, smirked and told me to have a nice day… as i struggled with two over excited dogs trying to reach her, i was able to keep the leashes short enough that the dogs could not reach her or her dog.
i did drop the poo bag and my gloves in the process and had moved far enough out of the woman’s path that by the time her companion followed with his dog, i was well out of their way.
i will tell you that i did one thing wrong.
When i saw the couple with their dogs, in spite of the fact that the man called the dogs to them and started leashing them.. i should have assumed that they were a direct threat to me and my dogs and immediately shortened the leashes and moved off leaving the dog piles for someone to step in. I will next time.
I am sure each and every one of you who have criticized could do better.. would have done better.. would never have put themselves in that position anyway… would never own a dog they had to warn other people to avoid… can walk their dogs safely off leash in any circumstance and believe that only people who don’t train their dogs can’t do the same… and would be glad to lend me your copy of your favorite dog training video.
and isn’t it good that woman taught JoB a lesson.. thinking she could go to a park with her dog aggressive dogs even when that park was practically empty and let their leashes out in a clearing letting them have a little fun.
All i can say to that is that you need to get a grip on reality…
and i truly hope you never encounter a situation where you have underestimated the malicious behavior of another person and put yourself at risk..
because you clearly aren’t equipped to deal with it..

since you aren’t dog owners, let me put this in another context that you probably can relate to..
you leave a bar… it is late.. on your way out the door you notice that someone has knocked the sign warning of a huge hole that you helped dig earlier into the bottom of the hole …
someone else leaves the bar after you and is joined by a buddy and is staggering around.
you yell at them to watch out for the hole…
they look at one another and start swaggering towards you…
you yell at them again that they should stop.. there is a hole…
they scowl and keep coming…
You warn them again but… they are bound and determined to do what you told them not to… and are headed directly at you….
you scramble around the hole nearly falling in and the guy in the lead nearly falls into the hole… but his buddy grabs his shirt and keeps him from falling in.
They stand there laughing at you because you nearly fell in the hole getting away from them…
Were they just really stupid or were they malicious?
my guess is you don’t care too much just as long as they didn’t pull you into the hole with them.
Would they be any less stupid… or malicious if they saw your warning as an challenge?
probably not.
but will they tell everyone else that you dug the hole and that it was your fault and that you should have climbed down and put the sign back before they left the bar and that you had no business telling them not to fall into it… and that you probably dug the hole just so they would fall into it or at the least knocked the sign into the hole so they would fall in…
most likely, they will.
and most likely someone will blame you for it all.

BarbGMemberJoB…at what point did you see that I was NOT a dog owner? Maybe you were too busy with your lengthy essays to see that i never said I was not a dog owner. And your analogy about the hole was stupid, I tried to come up with a better word, but I can’t, it was just stupid. I’m sorry if I upset you because I didn’t agree with your rant, but like waterworld said, there was only one side, yours, why oh why do we need to agree with you?
So go ahead and post another 50 paragraph response to my disagreeing with you and how you were in the right because, well, you just were. Your leashes were not too long, your dogs were doing what your dogs do, this woman was definitely out to get you, and someone fell in a hole.

You’ve worn me down and I call, “uncle, uncle, uncle” at the top of my lungs so that they can her me all the way from Olalla to Walla Walla.
You’re right, you have been wronged by the woman in the park, you did nothing wrong, and your dog handling skills and knowledge are above reproach.
I’m hoping this is the affirmation you were searching for by your OP before the rest of us ran it off the rails and just didn’t get how badly you were wronged.
Hopefully this will put an end to your strident and what must be painful-to-write screeds on how we all got the situation confused.

My “pretty-much loved” dog decided to bolt minutes ago…My wife went to grab something from the trunk of our car and accidentally let him out…he then proceeded to bolt towards the Fauntleroy Ferry Dock.
Unfortunately he likes to chase airliners and ferries (go figure?)…I remember years ago living down by SeaTac having to keep him inside when the Korean Airlines Cargo flight would depart… For some reason 747’s really rile him up?
Anyhow, I’m thinking that he may have hooked up with an Orca “Pod”? If any Puget Sound divers find him walking along the bottom (he’s comfortable to a depth of about 30’)…just gently pull on his tail and point towards the surface…he’ll probably figure it out.
Note: Just don’t point to the surface when a Ferry is going by.

all i can say folk, is keep posting and hammering and bickering and clearing confusion and being funny as hell.
not to undermine your original post, JoB (it’s clear that your experience had a profound impact on you) but my favorite piece in this whole saga is in post 40. i totally get that it has nothing to with the point of the thread nor the intention of the thought, but it still makes me giddy.
