Are there any good preschools in West Seattle that don’t have a crazy wait list? We are on the wait list for Fauntleroy Children’s Center, but it’s more than we can afford. I’ve heard Little Pilgrim is really good…is it hard to get into?

    Hello,

I just started a Spanish Language preschool program in West Seattle, we are located in the Admiral District. We offer a wonderful program for children ages 12 months to 5 years old. Check our website at http://www.cometaseattle.com

It depends on which class you’re trying to get into. The 2’s class typically fills up on the first day of registration – though that fluctuates from year to year. This coming year it filled up with siblings and has a VERY long wait list… when I enrolled my son three years ago there weren’t as many people trying to get in, so people who registered well into the registration period got a spot in the 2’s. Next year there might not be as many 2 year olds here in west seattle… or there could be more – who knows? There are more than twice as many 3’s and 4’s spots than 2’s so it’s usually easier to get a spot It’s really hard to say since you never know how many preschool age kids there are in a particular year. I will say it’s a fantastic school! My son loved it and I’m more than pleased with his growth and development through the school. If you’re interested give them a call and the director will give you all the information you will need. If you are interested for a year from now, just make sure that you get your registration papers as soon as they are available and turn them in the first day. Doesn’t guarantee you a spot (as in the case of this fall) but it’s better safe than sorry. :)

My daughter goes to Little Pilgrims too and we love it. The year we got in there wasn’t a big wait list but there seems to be this year. I got my registration paperwork in THE SAME DAY I got it. I filled it out and got it in right away. It comes out in March for the following year.

thats just what you have to deal with. I think our daughter was on the waiting list for quite a while before we got her in a good program.

Cant wait for “big kid” school sign up!

ToddinWestwood – Oh, “big kid” sign up is it’s own circle of hell and confusion… Ugh, the process of figuring out which school to send a kid to in the Seattle Public Schools is QUITE an interesting process.

Try not to get discouraged. We were on a waitlist last Sept and got in mid year. The transition for our little girl was a piece of cake even though the other kids had known each other for several months. So even if you are waitlisted you may still get in later on in the school year. Good luck!

How old is your child? Does your child have good communication and social skills? Have you heard of or considered peer modeling?

My son is HoH and attends preschool through the school district for deaf/HoH kids. He has peer models in his class that model appropriate ‘normal’ behavior.

My daughter works as a peer model one day a week in the class next to his. There’s a very real need for peer’s in developmental preschool classes.

There’s no fee to the parents for your child to be a peer model.

Actually, I believe Roxhill charges $25 or $50 a month for a peer model in their Developmental Preschool. I think West Seattle Elementary charges the same. I KNOW that Roxhill was $25 a month a few years ago but think someone told me that their peer model child at WS Elementary (High Point) went up to $50 a month. Still a bargain.

Que, I heard that next year (2009-10) the Seattle School District will go more toward reference schools instead of letting people pick their schools. Has anybody else heard that?

    H57Mom,

My cursory search for peer modeling programs came up with heaps of useless info. Can you post more info? That sounds like something we would really like to participate in.

You might try Westside School for next Fall — apply early. Yes, it’s an independant school and much more $ than Little Pilgrim, but the school does offer tuition assistance. The preschool program is excellent– half and full day options M-F. We have done both — LP and Westside, started at LP and then moved to WS. It’s not impossible to get into LP — church parishoners get priority, so that’s always an option to get a leg up.

Irukandji, not heinz57 mom here but if you’re interested in peer modeling I can get some info for you. Your child has to be THREE by Aug 31st and have no delays in speech or any other area. Your child will be going to school with children with some issues, such as autism, hard of hearing, learning disabilities, etc. (anything that comes up that year) I wanted my daughter to be a peer model but she has a speech problem so I didn’t approach the subject with the teacher. My 8 year old son went to the developmental preschool at Roxhill as a student, not a peer model.

It’s a wonderful program and the teachers there are incredible. You can probably call Roxhill and ask for Tami and talk to her about it. I don’t know the teacher at WS Elementary.

If you do talk to Tami at Roxhill tell her Bonnie told you about the program. She knows me. If you have more questions just ask me. I’m pretty sure we know each other.

Hope Lutheran pre-school has a few openings. We were very happy with their program. The preschool will be moving into beautiful brand new classrooms in a couple of weeks. Mrs. Marie Turnow is an excellent pre-k teacher with many years of teaching experience. Having experienced a couple other preschools in West Seattle with my older children, I was delighted to stumble upon Hope Lutheran preschool. Academically, socially, emotionally…my child was supported and blossomed.
