Please be aware of owls when on Fairmont Ave at dusk or dawn. Last night, while out for a run at approximately 7:30 pm, I was attacked by what appeared to be a barred owl about 75 yards down hill from the round about. It clawed the top of my head. I yelled and turned around to see the owl in full wing span just above and behind me. He made a second pass at me, I yelled and waves my arms. He then went into a tree and stared me down. I turned around and ran up the hill as fast as I could. Apparently, barred owl are territorial and aggressive. They are known to mistake heads for prey, especially those with earphone wires or ponytails. I did have my hair back in a ponytail. I’m wondering if anyone else in West Seattle has recently experienced an owl attack. If so, when and where.

I have seen this brought up here. I believe there are families in North admiral and Lincoln park. Fairmont sounds like another logical home too. They attack humans during certain seasons. You might find past discussions in the Blog.

I read about someone having a similar encounter on Tiger Mountain on Reddit recently. Apparently certain times of year are more likely to have issues. Probably when the young are adolescent?
