JoBParticipantThere will be an open house at Nickelsville Saturday from 2PM till 6PM which will culminate in the pot luck forum members are organizing.
The folks at Nickelsville want to let you know that you are invited to both.
There have been some major improvements in the camp in the past month… you should stop by to see them for yourself whether you can stay for the pot luck or not.
Our own MIWS (Mike Stahl) will be leading tours of the camp. He is very proud of the improvements to his new home.

JiggersMemberMaybe McGinn will show up for some pot-luck food on his McShwinn.

DianeParticipantReally looking forward to this wonderful community gathering, FINALLY going to see Nickelsville and meet all the folks; for those of us who have never been there and maybe just as a reminder to anyone who may decide last minute, ‘hey, this sounds great and I want to go, but how do I get there?’ can you please re-post directions?
~
I know you all have posted directions many times in various places, but where to find among all the posts about Nickelsville? I would be most grateful if you would post again here
~
and what are the clothing/shoes/other needs for families and others that we may be able to bring along to the party?
June 17, 2011 at 7:05 pm #726820
miwsParticipantDiane, we are at 7116 West Marginal Way SW, on the southeast corner of W. Marg and Highland Park Way, at the bottom of the big hill.
It’s a little tricky getting in here from the north, until you get used to it.
As far as clothing needs, I’ll just pass along the link to this thread from last week. Please note though that the only family we have right now is the first one listed with the four kids.
https://westseattleblog.com/forum/topic/clothing-needed-at-nickelsville-childrens-and-adult
As far as adult clothing, we have pretty much all shapes and sizes of people here.
Looking forward to seeing you!
Mike

angelescrestParticipantJune 17, 2011 at 7:32 pm #726822
SueParticipantDiane, I couldn’t find it either until someone said to look for the small parking lot with the portable toilets in it at that intersection – that’s when I finally noticed it. I haven’t been there yet, but I was at least able to pinpoint it that way.
June 17, 2011 at 7:56 pm #726823
JiggersMemberWhat bus route do they take to get there and back from wherever?
June 17, 2011 at 8:29 pm #726824
velo_nutParticipant“Velo-nut,
Did you say you were bringing a salad?
A/C “
Nope. I’ll be up for an early morning bike ride, then to the Festival in Burien. Later on in the afternoon I’ll be pulling ivy. Maybe a little grilling and a few beers on the deck as the sun goes down to round off the day.
June 17, 2011 at 8:44 pm #726825
Rod ClarkMemberJiggers, the 23 Highland Park goes by there.
June 17, 2011 at 8:46 pm #726826
flowerpetalMemberThe Route 23 from White Center (or downtown) will take you directly to the intersection of Highland Park Wy and W. Marginal Way.
June 17, 2011 at 11:48 pm #726827
JoBParticipantthe porta toilets have been moved out of the parking lot.. but you can still see the tops of them peeking up from Nickelsville.

celeste17ParticipantLook for the Pacific Plumbing building directly across the street (white building, use to be Familian Plumbing).
June 18, 2011 at 6:05 am #726829
DianeParticipantwell I drove up and down and across many times tonight in that area trying to find, looking for parking lot with porta potties; finally saw the tops of potties over ridge of tiny lot; VOILA
~
spent couple hours tonight with Mike, my wonderful tour guide, and meeting his community; look forward to party tomorrow, now that I sort of know how to get there
~
I HIGHLY recommend a visit; I am feeling incredibly grateful tonight, to have a flush toilet, and luxury to wash my hands, take a shower, grab some juice out of the fridge, heat up leftover Thai in the microwave, turn on the fan, sit down at my computer, watch the news on tv ……..oh the many things we take for granted
June 18, 2011 at 3:03 pm #726830
JoBParticipantdiane..
i had exactly the same experience the first time i tried to find Nickelsville and there were still porta potties in the parking lot:)
look for the park and ride sign on the east side of marginal just right after you turn right off of Highland Park Way..
you will be crossing two lanes of traffic to turn into the lot.. but that is seldom an issue on weekends.
there is a sandwich board sign on the side of the entrance to the lot that identifies Nickelsville.
June 18, 2011 at 4:02 pm #726831
JoBParticipantthere are currently 4 kids in Nickelsville..
two teen/tweens a girl who loves mysteries and a boy who loves comics
and two younger kids.. a boy and a girl.
I know that all kids are bored..
but these kids are bored because they literally have nothing to do.
yesterday i took down water pistols and hoola hoops and a puzzle and a kid’s activity kit with those markers that will only mark on special paper and a book and a couple of comics
but that is literally all those kids have to amuse themselves with.
older residents would play games with them if they had games…
all the kids like to draw…
if you are bringing gifts with you today…
you might want to think of the kids…
not only those that are at Nickelsville now
but those who will pass through.

miwsParticipantDiane, I enjoyed our visit, and thanks for being my “guinea pig” for the tours I will be helping conduct today.
Everything seems to be coming together, just hoping the rain will stop, and that we may even get some warm sun!

jamjetsParticipantGatewood-Morgan Junction-Lincoln Park area: Last call for “potluck pickup”!
I can pick up your donations in this area between 3:30 and 4:00. If you prefer to drop off I can give you a dropoff address on mid-Gatewood Hill, we will accept those until 4:30 sharp. Please make sure all items are well sealed for car transport.
We >do not< have the capacity to “hold warm” but those types of items should be fine on their own. We >do< have the capacity to hold items cool.
Should only be just showers late today so come on out!! There will likely be a little mud, so wear old/yardwork footwear.

JanSParticipantBen, Cheri,JoB, Angelescrest, and others who are participating today. Bless you all…it’s a wonderful thing you’re doing! I will be at my daughter’s wedding shower and another commitment this evening, but wish I could be there with you all. I will definitely be at the next one :)
June 18, 2011 at 6:29 pm #726835
KimberleyParticipantitems have been dropped of at Muttley’s. Thanks to all doing the hard yards and transporting items, etc
June 18, 2011 at 7:22 pm #726836
DianeParticipantJoB, “yesterday i took down water pistols”
~
oh, so you’re the culprit; soon as I stepped over the ridge into the camp, got squirted right in the face with water; kids and 1 big kid (adult) were running around having squirt gun fights; quite the introduction to the camp; funny
June 18, 2011 at 7:28 pm #726837
DianeParticipantMike, you were fabulous, as always; was wonderful to learn more about you on a personal level (besides the forum) and love your stories about West Seattle; wishing for you the job of your dreams; that employer will be truly blessed to have you on their team
June 18, 2011 at 8:00 pm #726838
DianeParticipantTo everyone who may wonder what they can contribute; in just a short time I saw a couple needs; one guy was making popcorn over fire pit in big lidded pot, which got engulfed in flames; he wore cloth oven mitts to grab pot to shake the popcorn and take off fire for all to share; during the process his mitts caught fire few times; not good; so does anyone have a big lidded pot with LONG handle so they can make popcorn over fire pit safely? and a pair or 2 of heat/fire proof oven mitts?
~
and they still need fire pit tools, to turn burning wood, and tools to grab hot food off fire
~
It was still somewhat light out when I left at 9:30pm; so not sure if they have any safe battery-powered lanterns for reading
~
since they have no bathing facilities, packages of wipes for ‘sponge baths’ would seem to be very beneficial; just try going to search for a job if you have no way to bathe
~
Mike brought up a point (that as a girl never occurred to me) any ideas for the men to be able to shave?
June 18, 2011 at 8:09 pm #726839
miwsParticipantJune 18, 2011 at 11:35 pm #726840
JoBParticipantDiane..
so sorry the kids got you
so glad they are having fun
batteries are a problem..
so when night falls most people rely on firelight..
*****
on my way down there now..
don’t let the rain stop you
they have a couple of new rain shelters that will help keep you dry
