trueblueMemberDoes anyone have a recommendation for someone who specializes in rat containment and removal? Our neighbor has rats in her attic and has had a pest company come out, but they did not find out where they were coming in, did not set up the traps she charged a fortune for (even came out twice to “remove the rats”). She just had a handyman come out to work on another project and he heard the rats and he went up to the attic to check things out and saw no traps, so she suspects they never set any (they were scheduled to come out next week to remove and reset the traps that are supposedly up there, but she canceled the service and surprisingly they didn’t ask for the traps back). Since she is dealing with the death of her husband, she does not have the strength and energy to try and find someone else at the moment, so we told her we would post on the blog since there always seems to be great suggestions and referrals from the community. She desperately needs to find someone who is honest (she can’t crawl up in the attic to see if there are traps and definitely can’t do it herself), who will do a good job and be gentle with someone who is feeling rather fragile right now.

anonymeParticipantJohn @ Adept Pest: the one and only guy to call. Search the WSB and you will find he has an enormous following here. John is smart, honest, and will not hard sell toxic solutions or unnecessary services. I’ve had him out on several occasions, including to do rodent exclusion on my crawl space last year. He’s just the best.

maplesyrupParticipantEden did a pretty good job for us. Showed us where they were coming in, blocked the entry points, set traps, and eliminated the problem.

ghar72ParticipantAnother vote for John at Adept. Not only is he good, he’s such a nice guy. We had rats tunneling into our crawl space, under the foundation. John hauled bags and bags of cement and rock down there to fix the holes. We waited a year to make sure the job held before having our crawl space cleaned out and insulated. John did that for us as well, and cheaper than others. He’ll even take photos of the job and send them to you!

anonymeParticipantOne more thing. John is trained in Integrated Pest Management, which looks at the least toxic solutions first. Most pest control companies want you to sign up for installation of bait traps, with a monthly maintenance program. This is a really ineffective and expensive way to deal with the issue – expensive for you, a quick, cheap buck for the PC company. In my experience, these employees receive minimal training, and come up with some outrageously ignorant claims – any scare tactic to make a sale. One told me that rats are not animals. Some of them even claim to be “green”, while using the most toxic poisons on the market.
John doesn’t pull any of that crap. I don’t think he even uses bait traps, as they often mean you (or your neighbors) will end up with dead rats in your walls and elsewhere. The same guy who told me rats weren’t animals told me that once the rat was sick with poison it would flee the house, and that the only time he’d seen rats die inside the walls was due to old age. Right….

trueblueMemberThank you so much for your suggestions. I knew this was the place to go. I will give her the recommendations and contact numbers for John and Frank so she can talk to them and see who she thinks will best fit her needs. We are also looking for a new pest company to do our quarterly maintenance for ants and so if we pick the same person, they will end up with 2 new customers within a block of each other and I will let them know it’s because of the great people here on the blog. Thanks again!

MellyMelParticipantHeh, another vote for John at Adept. Aside from knowing his stuff, he is one of the nicest people around.
