West Sea FanMemberI have a kindergartner and a preschooler. My current church has very few children. I would love to join a faith family with a healthy population of kids. Is there a moderate to liberal protestant church in West Seattle that fits the bill? Recommendations appreciated.

Rob WastmanMemberNo sure what a “moderate to liberal protestant church” means to you but, West Side Foursquare Church has a great childrens ministry
11452 26th Avenue Southwest Seattle, WA 98146-3405 – (206) 248-1341
If you have teenagers try the skatechurch meeting at 4157 California Avenue Southwest Seattle, WA 98116-4198 206-890-8110
They also have a program starting up for pre-teen kids Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM

ws4everMemberWestside Unitarian has a fabulous, healthy and still growing, kids’ program. Services are 10:30 Sundays @7141 California.

KenParticipantFoursquare brand means full scale wingnuts of the Amiee Semple McPherson variety.
Neither liberal nor moderate.

I am guessing Rob is well aware of this.
In WS the Unitarians are likely to do the least damage to your progeny.

WesMemberKen does not speak for all of us and is very good at generalizations, with one-sided references, but we love him!
Lots of great protestant churches, just have some fun checking different ones out till you are led by God to the right one! we’ll be praying for you to find the right one!
Also Shorewood Foursquare Church, has a very large Christian school ministry, and lots of kids and families!

dawsonctParticipantNot to GENERALIZE, but I have to agree with Ken on this one, Foursquare churches are not now, nor have they ever been associated with liberalism or even moderate POV’s.

IrukandjiParticipantWhatever church you choose, please make sure the Sunday School staff and assistants have passed a background check and have fingerprints on file. Ain’t just the Catholic Churches that are a haven for baby touchers. Know who’s ‘leading’ your kids.

CarolPBMemberHard to get more liberal than United Church of Christ. I attended the one on Beacon Hill (Bethany UCC). Newer-6-7yrs-church start, growing young families, but not West Seattle. Don’t know about the UCC’s in West Seattle.

SueParticipantAdding to ws4ever’s recommendation, here’s the info on the religious education program at Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation. http://wsuu.org/re/RE_welcome.html
There are 80+ childen in the program right now, and while I can’t speak as a parent, I think the RE Director, Kari Kopnick, does a fabulous job.

GenHillOneParticipantWell, I can at least assume that Rob was well aware that the OP did not have either a teen or pre-teen (“I have a kindergartner and a preschooler”), lol.

JanSParticipantCarolPB….Alki UCC is a pretty nice church, lots of families (63rd SW and SW Hinds), and I’ve heard good things about Admiral UCC.(4320 SW Hill)

dustinParticipantPeace Lutheran Church in West Seattle has both a healthy kid population and a pretty liberal orientation.
They are active with Open Door Ministries, Compass Housing Alliance and are regulars at the yearly Seattle AIDS walk.
My wife and I have been members for about 3 years now and joined largely because the congregation was, and continues to be, exceptionally warm and welcoming to everyone.
On the kid front I know there is a strong nursery and Sunday School program and that both volunteering parents as well as paid staff go through background checks.
P.S. You’ve heard about Lutheran Potlucks, right? :)

ws4everMemberVouching for Westside Unitarian’s screening and background checks: did this last week myself, as I’ll be a volunteer this year. Many great choices of churches here in West Seattle, West Seattle Fan.

peacefamilyMemberAlways good to hear about other moderate/liberal/progressive Christians out there! We belong to Peace Lutheran, our kids are now 11 and 14, but there is a nice size group of younger kiddos. Nice group of warm, thoughtful, and fun people. Good luck!
