beachdrivegirlParticipantKayliegh if the dog is off leash the owner gets cited a ticket just like speeding that is why i use that analogy (aka to some thread jacking…)If the dog obviously seems abused/neglected then the dog is taken away and yes I believe put to sleep in some cases depending on shelter availabilty.

JoBParticipantKayleigh..
good question.. what happens?
generally speaking.. when animal control is called, nothing much happens right away.
they, like everyone else, are understaffed.
if there has been an incident… or a dog is being aggressive… the police generally arrive… and i think the dog is confiscated by animal control for quarantine..
I am not sure there is a provision beyond citation for off leash violations if someone is caught by animal control… even for repeated violations.
but i think the fine is fairly stiff.
If a dog has escaped from a car or home.. it is generally taken to a shelter and the owner is notified if the dog has tags…
it is expensive to reclaim your dog… and you are not always notified (collars and tags come off) .. so the dog could be readopted or put down…
However, it is never a waste of time to call animal control about off leash animals. if there are repeated calls about violations in one area they will eventually patrol that area and repeat offenders will cited… they may only get a warning, but at least they are reminded they are accountable for their behavior.
I am not absolutely positive that is the way it works here.. but it is the way it has worked every other place i have lived…

beachdrivegirlParticipantJoB i understand that every case is different but some of the more recent postrs are from unreasonable individuals that seem to think that they are *perfect*. I understand that I take a risk, and my risk is smaller than some, and personally I do not see my post as encouraging those irresponsibel dog owners. i thnk my original post clarly states a *safe* and *secure* way to make you and your pup happy but also those who do not feel comfortable around dogs happy.

JoBParticipantkayleigh…
you jest.. but if you have ever had a truly geriatric dog.. you know how unpredictable and cranky they can get in their dotage…
just like people:)

JoBParticipantKayleigh..
i think it is hard to get the drama around this unless you have been the victim of a dog attack…
Generally by someone who says they can’t understand… their dog would never do this.. and then runs to escape the responsibility of what their dog has just done.
Every day i walk my dogs, i am taking the risk that i or my pets will be injured by an off leash dog out of control.
And i have been injured more than once.
I admit, that with my dogs, i am taking a larger risk than most… but i am still taking a risk…
even though my dogs are leashed at all times and under control…. even though i avoid areas where there are many people or dogs…
There are simply too many inexperienced or uneducated or irresponsible dog owners who think that leashing their dog somehow infringes on their rights….
but don’t seem to have the least bit of concern about the rights of those around them.
We all should have the right to walk our streets and our parks without the fear of being accosted by other people’s pets…
that’s why there are leash laws.

KayleighMemberJo, I said, “I don’t want to.”
That means I don’t need or want yet another long post. (maybe others do, but I’m done reading on the topic.)
This topic has been beaten to death here.

rs261MemberHeres my analogy for you.
I have a concealed weapons permit, I carry my gun with me all the time…most of the time I only fire it at the shooting range. Sometimes, I go to a secluded park, and shoot my gun at targets on trees. When people show up, I put my gun back in the holster, making sure not to harm anyone. I have complete control over it at all times, no one is ever in any danger. Does that make it ok?
Concealed weapons are permitted in washington with a permit. Shooting is permitted on gun ranges. Why cant I shoot my gun in a secluded empty city park?

RSMemberOh goodie. Now we’re talking about concealed weapons! Kayleigh, if we weren’t sure before, I think this thread has officially imploded. :)

rs261Memberto me thats a much better analogy then honking. dogs and guns are dangerous… both have the ability to injure or kill. Honking…unless you cause me to have a heart attack…will not do much in the injury department (unless you got one monster horn!)

JoBParticipantrs261…
JoB cocks her head…
in ways i don’t like.. this is a good analogy.
i think shooting your gun in the forest would be fine.. unless of course it wasn’t. then it would be tragic.

beachdrivegirlParticipantrs261 much better analogy :)

MagpieParticipantI don’t even have a dog. It might make me speed, oh, but I don’t have a car either so I can’t bring the dog I don’t have to the off leash park (or honk illegally.) I’ll have to find another way to break the law today. Maybe I’ll let off a firecracker I don’t have either. (Don’t have a permit for the gun I don’t have either). Maybe I should keep the opinion that I have about the things I don’t have to myself. This post has put me in a silly mood.

datamuseParticipantFunny thing, I heard a story just tonight from a friend who went camping last weekend. Some people in the same campground had a couple of dogs, who weren’t leashed, but were belled.
Which was fine–until the dogs rousted a fawn, which fell into a nearby river and drowned.
That’s not likely to happen in West Seattle, where I’ve never seen any deer, but just last week a friend of mine’s leashed dog was attacked by another dog whose person did not have it under control…and, you guessed it, claimed their dog had NEVER done such a thing before.
(And I don’t see the relevance either, but I don’t speed, I do wear my seatbelt, and I don’t talk on the phone while driving except with a hands-free kit. So what?)
Like I said in an earlier post, so far it hasn’t really bothered me to encounter dogs on the Westcrest trails…but it does bother me when people only obey the law when it suits them.

AnonymousInactiveI have noticed a familiar trend throughout this forum that is so middle school, it makes me almost embarrassed to be a member here.
Can we give everyone a little respect?
The whole “breaking the law” issue and the examples of that were used to make a point. I can’t believe I have to point this out.
Posting ridiculous posts that serve absolutely no point only make you, personally, look foolish. They never add anything to the conversation.
No, I’m not on the payroll here, but I’m gonna speak up because someone has to. Rules were implemented a little while back, but the rules apply to EVERYONE.
datamuse – This has nothing to do with your post, btw. Thanks for sharing.

MrJTMemberUh, if someone wants to make a foolish post, makes for more fun reading. Carry on folks !

jMemberI agree NR. Threats and pointing fingers doesn’t help either. Just makes everyone defensive.
