skeeterParticipantHome soda machine
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/coming-soon-coke-k-cup-004300180.html
Am I understanding this correctly? There will be a new machine that allows you to make Coca Cola at home? That seems really silly. I guess it works for Soda Stream, though.
Right now I can purchase a 2-Liter bottle of Coke for about $1.25 on sale. That’s what – 8 servings? So about 16 cents for a glass of Coke. Those K-cups cost about 80 cents each, don’t they? Plus you’d need to purchase a can of CO2 wouldn’t you? The math just isn’t working in Skeeter’s head.
Environmentally this seems wasteful. I buy a 2 liter and recycle the bottle when I’m done. Nothing in a landfill. I think those little K-cup pods go in the landfill though. And who knows what you do with an empty canister when the CO2 is all gone.
What do other folks think?

miwsParticipantI don’t in the case of Keurig/Green Mountain, or whatever, but Sodastream has a “cylinder exchange”, for refilling/reusing them (think Blue Rhino and other propane exchanges), where you swap out your empty cylinder for a full one, for around $14.00. Outright purchase of a full one, is around $30.00.
The cylinders are available “everywhere”, for exchange or purchase, (I exchange mine at Bartell, usually, but they are also available at Target, Staples, Bed Bath, and others).

seaopgalParticipantAccording to the article in today’s Seattle Times, Green Mountain has said that its new machine will NOT require a CO2 cylinder … doesn’t say what they will use instead. I hate the non-recyclable K cups, too … have only used them in hotels, but find they produce a very small, lukewarm cup of ok coffee or weak tea.

skeeterParticipantThanks seaopgal. I found the article.

I must say I am very confused. How can you make a carbonated beverage in your home without CO2?
Maybe they are talking about making a sports drink without a carbonation source. But heck, I can do that now without a machine. You just mix powder and water. But COKE without carbonation? Doesn’t add up for me.

miwsParticipantYeah, that’s weird, skeeter.
I wonder if it’s just a matter of incomplete information, related to the new machine not using CO2 cylinders, and it uses cartridges instead?
And are the cartridges exchangeable/refillable/recyclable?

skeeterParticipantMaybe you’re right, Mike. I remember buying those little cartridges for a pellet gun I had when I was younger. Oh the memories…
February 6, 2014 at 8:27 pm #804113
metrognomeParticipantI suppose you young ‘uns aren’t old enough to remember the flavored tablets you could drop into a glass of water back in the 60’s to make a fizzy drink. Kinda like Alka Seltzer. Or Pop Rocks. I think they were only possible with the development of artificial sweeteners, which is likely what will sweeten K-Coke. As I understand it, the product isn’t developed yet and won’t hit the market for a year or so.

trickycooljParticipantReminds me of these german fizzy drink powders that my dad loves (me not so much): http://www.germandeli.com/Frigeo-Ahoj-Brausepulver-58g-10pck-Fizzy-Powder-2-oz-10-pck.html
I’ve heard of people with those soda machines cheaping out and using paint ball cartridges and bicycle pump cartridges instead of the proper refills which seems like a really toxic idea, there must be a food grade difference compared to emergency bike tire cartridges! (also gross!) But I know those smaller carts are also on the reusable whip cream bottles that you see often used in coffee shops.

JoBParticipantEmergen-C works just like the fizzy tabs used to..
and it’s supposed to be good for you :)

skeeterParticipantMore details here.

You don’t need CO2 canisters because each “packet” (that’s my term) will have an amount of CO2.
So this is looking even more expensive if you asked me. I bet it will cost $2 to make a liter of coca cola. Meanwhile skeeter is gonna keep buying in the 2-liter bottle on sale at Target in Westwood for $1.25.

westcoastdebParticipantWhich is worse – the 2 excedrin I have to take to combat the headache from not drinking the soda or just drinking the soda to begin with?
February 9, 2014 at 9:35 am #804119
metrognomeParticipantwcdeb — you *may* be experiencing caffeine withdrawal if Excedrin helps when other NSAID’s don’t; in addition to both aspirin and acetaminophin, it contains caffeine. The sweetener in the soda might not be helping. The best way to see if caffeine withdrawal is the problem is to gradually reduce consumption of caffeinated food and beverages. Long term use of any NSAID (esp. a combo like aspirin and acetaminophen) can result in a whole host of health problems. You may want to mention the HA’s to your health care provider.

HMC RichParticipantYou got that right metrognome.
I like the sodastream because I don’t like carrying two or three two liter bottles of soda, plus a gallon of milk, plus a half gallon of OJ, and cat litter etc., home from the grocery store.

JanSParticipantlove my sodastream…great for when I want the occasional scotch and soda ;-)
February 10, 2014 at 5:43 am #804122
charlabobParticipantNothing is without controversy :-) Sodastream is made in Israel with at least one manufacturing plant on the occupied west bank. Just saying:

JoBParticipantcharlabob..
I know :(
throwing it away now may make a point.. but it won’t make a difference :(

metrognomeParticipantif you haven’t seen SodaStream’s response about the whole flap around Scarlett Johansson resigning as an Oxfam ambassador because of their comments about her new relationship with SodaStream, it’s worth finding.
anyhoo, interesting convergence of two articles; one on Coke slumping market share in the US (1% is a slump? who knew?) and the other looking at the potential for massive expansion of one-cup machines. Guessing Coke is making a strategic move to purchase a percentage of Green Mountain now.
