I used steerco some years ago for the very reason you mentioned, dark color. I naively spread it to thickly under a rhoddy and killed it. The stuff was dense enough that it deprived the surface roots of water. But it looked great.

Steerco has too much uric acid in it. Get some composted chicken manure. They some on sale last week at the Admiral Safeway.

kellym, it makes a difference depending on what you’re using it for. If you’re mainly going for appearance and weed control, you’ll want a lot of woody content. If you need to add nutrition and condition the soil, a manure/compost blend might be the way to go, especially for roses and flowering plants.

I do like Beauti-Gro, but it does have a lot of woody material in it. I often get splinters while working with it. However, I’ve found it’s excellent for weed control. Sometimes I’ll use a manure product (like Steerco) with a top dressing of Beauti-Gro.

BTW, the really dark compost is usually that color because charcoal has been added to it. It has little or nothing to do with being “rich” or having enhanced nutritional value.
