kellym, it makes a difference depending on what you’re using it for. If you’re mainly going for appearance and weed control, you’ll want a lot of woody content. If you need to add nutrition and condition the soil, a manure/compost blend might be the way to go, especially for roses and flowering plants.
I do like Beauti-Gro, but it does have a lot of woody material in it. I often get splinters while working with it. However, I’ve found it’s excellent for weed control. Sometimes I’ll use a manure product (like Steerco) with a top dressing of Beauti-Gro.
BTW, the really dark compost is usually that color because charcoal has been added to it. It has little or nothing to do with being “rich” or having enhanced nutritional value.
