Our recycle bin went missing about a month ago near 45th/Brandon after we put it out for pick-up, never to be found again. SPU will replace it at no charge, but we are at their mercy and still waiting a month later. They implied there have been other missing bins and I’m curious if anyone else in the Seaview neighborhood had theirs mysteriously disappear too?

i am not in the seaview area but mine went missing…

they suggested i overloaded it and it broke when the recyling guys hoisted it.. in which case they take it away.

it was replaced within a week. call and complain.

The new recycling contractor, at least in my area, refuses to flip the lid before the hoist, so my lid is always bent after a pickup. It straightens out after about an hour but I do wonder if the supervisors have noticed.

I guess that’s one way to figure out which bins have been in the sun too long, but it looks really dumb when you watch it.

Yes! We lost our recycle bin about a month ago too. We’re near PCC, and we have alley pick-up. I walked around our alley and examined all the other bins, just to make sure ours hadn’t been put at the wrong house, but no luck. We got another one from the city. Still, it’s a mystery where the original one went.

Mine went missing on a Monday in Admiral about 3 weeks ago. Called SPU to report and they said it would take 5 – 7 business to replace. The replacement was there the following Tuesday morning when I went out to get the paper. Also a mystery where the original one went

Ours went missing last pick-up too, Admiral area. We called and they said they would bring another one on the next recycle day, so we’ll see if that happens. Not sure where I’m suppose to store 2 weeks of recycling until it shows tho’.

A few months ago my lid went missing. Sunrise Heights neighborhood. When I called, the lady also said 5 business days. On the 6th day I called back and was told I was a liar, people have to wait MONTHS for a replacement. I was told to keep the broken one in view of the street and they’d get it ASAP. So on the “Clean green” pick up day they took my good clean green bin and gave me a new clean green bin! I complained again and the following week they took my brand new trash can and gave me a new one of those! The third week when I complained, they finally got it right but replaced my old recycle bin with a much smaller one. Grrr

Yesterday my neighbors lid was missing when I brought up her bins. Man I hope she don’t have to go thru the same BS I did!

The new recycle bin I received is blue and slightly smaller. I wondered at first if the missing bins are part of a city plan to replace the old green bins with the new blue ones. But if that were the case, why would just a few go missing at a time? Still puzzling.

The neighbor behind me stole my bin after his went missing. I recognized the serial number and looked inside to find further proof it was mine. The neighbor has since moved but there may be a news story here if the city is taking them and not notifying people. My first thought was identity thieves. Now I have a camera to catch the culprit. I will be my own big brother.

i didn’t’ think about the identity thief angle.. but if they took mine all they got was a bin full of cardboard…

i shred anything with info on it.

    Here’s a good one:

Two weeks ago–a Wednesday–we hear a garbage truck outside (Monday is our day). We peek from the backyard to see the garbage man take our big, green recycle bin, dump the contents and replace it with a smaller, shiny blue one. We’re like what? We hadn’t contacted them or viceversa, nor had anyone else had the same “switch” occur on our block. The new one came with our street address written on top, and it’s good-looking, but it is too small. I must call!

For some reason the recycle bins are labeled with stickers (Yard Waste) that lasted maybe 2 days. I used a white paint marker to list “Yard Waste” and put my service address on the bin. I usually use this for the smaller cans because of the winds which can scatter the parts up here on the hill. It is not unusual to find the smaller lids 5 to 6 houses downwind.

For some reason we eneded up with an extra Yard Waste Bin…. no address on it. I keep waiting for it to be picked up but it hasnt happened yet.

My big green recycle bin was replaced with a blue one a few months ago…around the March 30 revamp date. I hadn’t requested the replacement, but the metal bar thing of my green one had been bent…so maybe they replaced it because of that.

I can envision the trucks swapping out only a few each service day because really…how many of those bins can they carry on the truck? Unless they load a bunch of them into another truck and drive around replacing bins, then it seems better to just do a few each week on the collection trucks that are already driving around.

Ours dissapeared a couple months ago, I had to contact SPU (twice) to get a replacement. They said it had probably broken and been taken away(it had a bent bar too). But it would be nice if they left a note on the gargabe can or at the door so we are not left in the dark.

My green one was replaced with a blue one recently but it doesnt have my address on it. It looks like it might belong a couple doors down.

This is the council committee that is supposed to ride herd on SPU.

    http://www.seattle.gov/council/Committees/environment_comm.htm

Environment, Emergency Management & Utilities Committee

    Members:

    Chair: Richard Conlin

    Vice-Chair: Richard J. McIver

    Member: Tim Burgess

    Alternate: Sally J. Clark

Some of these are running for office and should be able to give a definite answer to a our local esteemed member of the press. (That’s you WSB)

A couple have even pretended interest in WS issues in the recent past.

If the cans are being replaced on a schedule, then it should be announced and the SPU staff should quit lying about it.

If it is being done by the contractor for reasons unknown, the someone should find out why.

I have a big recycle bin, less than a year old and it better stay that way.

Finally got our new recycle bin this week – took 2 months!

    #671913

I live 1 block off Admiral one of my recycle bins went missing last monday after pickup. After looking up & down my alley it was no where to be found. Called and willsee if the new one comes next Monday. FYI when your garbage lid goes missing, beware! If it’s on someone elses can & they have extra garbage if your address is on that lid, guess what, it ends up on your bill. Has happened on more than one occasion to me.

About a month ago I saw the recycle truck coming down our street. On two of the stops they took the ENTIRE bin and put it in the truck. Later their bins were replaced with BLUE bins. I still have big green bins and I am guessing they are replacing OLD green bins with new blue ones.

Ours went missing yesterday. it was there as of Sunday night and then last night I went out & it was gone. Not sure what happened to it? All of our neighbors still have theirs. I guess I will call & try to solve the issue.
