I’d like to look at the dual language program at Concord for my daughter for kindergarten next year- do any of your children go there? I’d love to hear about it! Love it? Feel disappointed? Pros, cons?

    Thanks so much!

We don’t have kids there, but I was looking into it as a possibility in a couple years. Reading through the info on the school’s website, it seems a bit tricky to get into the dual language program. First, assuming Concord isn’t your neighborhood school, you have to get in. Say you get in (and you accept it as your school), that doesn’t mean you’re in the dual language program. They don’t make that determination until some future date and again, there are a number of tiebreakers for deciding who gets in. While I liked the idea of a dual language program, it seemed like there were too many variables to even getting in. But I don’t know ANYTHING about Concord on a personal level. This is just the info I took from reading the site. I hope those with firsthand experience reply to your post b/c I’d love to learn more about it. Good luck!

I know a couple-I’ll send them over for dinner and they can tell you all about it! From what I hear they are very happy-but it is true-you are not guarenteed an immersian spot and even up to this year it was left literally to the first day of school until you knew-maybe a week before! And that was up to the school not enrollment.

Contact Nicole, who runs Europa kids. When we went to the open house at Europa kids, I think she said that her son was going to be going there.

Even if I remember that wrong, she may know of some other Europa kids parents that have sent there kids there since one of Europa kids programs is Spanish immersion it would make sense that parent would continue that by sending them on to Concord.

We looked at it (chose Roxhill Elementary instead). My daughter was in a Spanish/German immersion preschool for 2 years, and Spanish immersion daycare prior to that (in CA). I cannot recommend immersion education enough!

Check w/ the owners/operators of EuropaKids International Preschool in West Seattle, they and at least 2 other families from their school are currently at Concord, and loving it from what I understand.

P.S. You have to apply no later than the Open Enrollment date for ANY of the Seattle Public Schools “option” schools (check SPS’s website for more info). You are NOT guaranteed admission into an option school, it’s by lottery, and even if you do get into Concord, there is no guarantee you’ll get into the immersion program. We got our 1st choice option school by sheer luck, and a lot of pre-planning. We applied to SPS during the early enrollment period (Oct – Jan), then made sure our option choice was made by the open enrollment date (mid March), then we had to wait until late May to hear whether or not we were in. It’s an arduous process… if your kid is going into K next year, START LOOKING AT SCHOOLS NOW. Yes, it’s crazy, but trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

My son started Kindergarten at Concord just this year and so far I am happy and most importantly so is he. Granted we are only about 25 days into the school year but I am happy with our experience. We live over in Highland Park so it is a fairly easy drive down the hill for us. My son was on a waiting list for like a minute. I don’t know what it enrollment look like next year, but I like to think of Concord as my little secret school. People don’t really know about how great it is yet. Feel free to email me if you have specific questions; esheymc@hotmail.com

I also have a kindergartner at Concord. I thought the school was all dual language instruction but it’s not. I didn’t fill out the interest form so if you want the Spanish immersion program be sure to fill out the form.

That said, my daughter’s teacher is great and the school is fantastic!

Yes, you have to specifically request the immersion classroom. There are a total of 3 kindergarten classes, 2 immersion, one not. And Mary, I beleive you can request it for next year; I think they accept K & 1st, into the immersion; I beleive it is worth checking into.

Esheymc, Sounds like you got into the immersion program quickly? Was he on the wait list for the school and then once accepted on the wait list for the program? My fear is that we put Concord at #1 choice and then have to wait to see if we get into the program, passing up another school we’d rather get into. But it also sounds like their regular program is good and then you can try for the immersion program at 1st grade. If you’re already enrolled, seems like that would move you up the list for getting into the immersion program the following year, right?

On a side note, is the idea that Concord is a feeder to Denny then Sealth for their Intl programs? But it can’t be a prerequisite for getting into those programs if this is the only elementary feeder, right? Thanks for educating a soon-to-be newbie to the system!

I would love to hear if parents are as happy in the regular classes as they are in the immersion program. Looking for options to our neighborhood school for next year.

My son got into the immersion program almost right away. Basically I was on top of it. As soon as they said he was in at Concord, I filled out and faxed the immersion request form to their office; the form is available on their web site. It was all handled in July. I don’t know if there was a waiting list for the immersion program or not. I can’t speak to the non immersion class but I will say the school in general has a really good vibe and my son is super happy there which is my promary concern. He loves to go there everyday. I came into it with high expectations and at this point, they have been exceeded. In terms of a feeder school, it is supposed to feed Denny & Sealth. Now that they assign based on neighborhoods, I don’t know how it will work. We live in Highland Park so our neighborhood school would be Denny & CS. I signed a petition last year requiring the SPS to assign international students to the international middle & HS. I don’t know officially what came of that. I am not terribly knowledgeable about the whole system as this is my first year “in the system” but I can say we are happy with the school itself. And good luck.
