Hi all, looked down the sponsors list but didn’t find a specific listing for an Electrician – we may need a new fuse box this month and I could use a local referral. Thanks!

I recently need to have a ceiling fan installed correctly. I contacted Mark Kessler (“Mark Electric Inc”). He was able to come over to my house that same evening. He spent significant amount of time correcting the installation that had been done. He was fast, timely, very professional; and his rate was extremely reasonable. Plus he resides in West Seattle. I know that if I have any additional electrical work that needs to be done this is one person I would use again. He can be reached at (206) 409-7046 or markelectric@msn.com

I consulted Wiseman’s about installing a new kitchen vent hood not long ago. They gave me the number of a guy who does the ductwork, and told me I’d have to hire both an electrician and installer separately. I told them it seemed kind of crazy to have to hire 3 people to do one job, and they confirmed that’s what was needed. I did ask an electrician the same question a few years ago, and got the same answer – with a $350 quote for the electrical work alone.

I’m still skeptical, so hoping your post will shed some light on the topic.

However, if it is indeed just a plumber you need (rhyme unintended) Joe the Plumber is the best. You can read rave reviews about him all over this blog.

I have 2 baseboard heaters I need to remove from my living room. Looking for an electrician who can help with this. Should be a fairly easy job, I just don’t have the skills. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated or if you can do it, please email me at robinnmartin@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Master Electrician and former Project Manager here, saying that you should be sure to get at least 3 bids and make sure that you’re getting comparable services and equipment in each price. Just changing out a panel should cost <$5000. And that includes bringing grounding and bonding up to code.

Keep in mind that many residential electrical contractors bet on having clients that are not familiar with what these services should cost, are willing to pad their costs and service changes are a cash cow. Also, I say this sight unseen. There are some requirements that have changed in the last few Code revisions that do raise the cost. Also, know that a copper bus 200 amp single phase panel and a typical list of breakers is not terribly expensive.

If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer them.

I have no idea if that price is reasonable or not. I wouldn’t mind some electrical work at our house, but we’ve gotten along without it.

however, I would recommend getting a couple more quotes if you can, from some other recommended electricians. each time we’ve gotten quotes on work (a new roof, new gutters/downspouts/ tree removal etc,) we get about 3 quotes from different places.

I don’t know, maybe you did already.

Sarah – this is NOT a professional opinion of ANY kind – God forbid, my house could have an electrical fire at any moment, or yours, but I have to say it …

We heard the same thing when we bought our 1941-built bungalow. We had some minor electrical work done – converting some of the 2-prong outlets to three (whew! glad we had the foresight!) – and the electrician, whose name and company name I have long since forgotten, took one look at our panel and said, “Whoo-boy! You should get that replaced. Haven’t seen one like that in a LONG time.”

    That was 21 years ago.

Only problem we have is that every so often one breaker gets thrown when we have my computer, our son’s computer, a few other appliances and .. inexplicably, the camel’s-back-breaking-straw is always … the iron, plugged in (the same circuit spans the front bedroom, living room, “dining area”).

I’d love to hear what it is about a panel that costs so much, especially if that does NOT even involve rewiring!

I will heartily endorse the electricians at Washington Electric. Professional, prompt, good price, and absolutely will hire again when/if we need electric work.

We recently contracted with Washington Electric for the installation of a standby generator and were very, very pleased with their level of professionalism, knowledge, and pricing. We would not hesitate to recommend them and will call them should we need an electric contractor in the future.

This might be a long shot, and I know different jobs have different pricing… But from experience, can anyone give a general idea of how much per hour Mr. Sparky charges for a general house call? I’ve called twice outside of business hours and have reached what seems to be their national call center, and can’t get answers or callbacks.

    Just curious, thanks.

I am a skilled home remodeler currently looking for work. I am a west seattle (Alaska Junction) local. Currently attending classes at the Art Institute of Seattle for Graphic Design. I have a wide knowledge in construction field. I do not own a car, only use feet and Rapid Ride. I live as green as possible. This is due to no one hiring me because I’m a student, military vet that can do anything.I worked as an Aviation Electrician on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln. I was trained by the best and work cheap this is due to my frugalness. If you want the work done right the first time and as affordable as possible I am your guy.

I turned on the gas fireplace on Friday; the pilot mechanism died the next day and service can’t come until mid next week.

So I pulled out the electric radiator and plugged that in. The outlet started buzzing which was a first (love that 70 year old wiring). Plugged it in elsewhere. Then I placed a call to a highly-recommended (here) electrician to inspect the scary outlet who has not called back. Time to call someone else. It must be autumn!

Yes… I too had an experience with Clear NRG, and they are definitely high pressure. They want both “decision makers” present during their presentation. This is a CLEAR tip off that a company is high pressure.

    .

Does your favorite plumber or electrician want both parties present before quoting an estimate? – of course not!

    .

My advice is to find a company that will replace just one window, and then go from there. Let that company replace ONE window, and then see how satisfied you are.

    .

Most of these window and siding companies are only interested in selling a highly inflated “whole house” estimate.

Quick tangent to this, if I may: Are electricians the right people to call about pulling some CAT-6 internet cable? WiFi reception in my basement office has become untenable and I must get hard line or die. I figure they are used to pulling wire and boxes and such but it seems they might be too pricey for that? Thanks!

Kudos to Brad at Expert Electric in West Seattle. I had an electrical problem in my home and gave him a call. He asked me some questions and was able to solve my problem on the phone. Now that’s what I call professionalism, honesty, and incredible service. Thank you Brad – I will definitely be calling you the next time I need an electrician!

As a Master Electrician I can tell you that if a contractor is going to try and hit you up for $250 for a “system test” you need to find a different electrician. This has been an issue in the past with other electrical contractors.

Also, a trip charge for service work is not an uncommon practice, if

We just hired ALKI ELECTRIC, Inc, (425-501-1570) Jim Fullwiler, to put lights and outlets in our basement. He was able to come in and in less than 1 day install 8 lights with outlets and 2 – 4 outlet boxes that required a new breaker. He did a great job, was very well priced, was on-time, courteous, and cleaned up after himself. I highly recommend him for any of your electrical needs. We couldn’t be happier, now we can see and have the use of a large area that was just a dark cave before!

Recommendations for an electrician come from friends and family members. Make sure you follow up the recommendation with research. Check the internet for information. Look at the company’s web page to see what services they offer as well as the customer comments. Call the company. Talk to them to find out if the services they provide fit your needs, budget, and time.

Joe rocks! We had the same running toilet issue here at our home, but I was determined to fix it myself before raising the white flag and calling for help; it was clearly the the ring. The problem was, our terlet “was” that 25 years old piece of work, not a user friendly model, and I’d disassembled far more than needed to fix a simple problem. Basically, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing!

Enter Joe on a late Sunday afternoon. He arrived at a moments notice, kindly amused at my DIY attempt. Since everything was already in pieces, it was a simple job of putting it all back together again and I came out of the whole deal with my humility intact having received an E for effort, and, an invoice well under what would be expected for a Sunday call-out.

Joe clearly cares about his clients. He educates them, thus enabling them to make informed decisions for the things in their home they “own”, rather than having to make on the spot, fear-based decisions.

A quick note to fellow consumers: in any situation requiring potentially costly repairs, conifer doing the following:

    ● ask family and friends who they like/used trusted in the past, AHEAD OF TIME. Create a list, i.e electrician, plumber, mechanic, etc.

    • lacking a referral, and if it’s a non-emergency situation, call around and get quotes and second opinions. Ask everything- when does the “the clock start”? Do they charge per mile from their location to your home in addition to their service,? How do they charge for a quote- (you may not use their service, yet end up having to pay for having pay for them to come out to tell you their price for repairs.)

Information is power. There is nothing worse than feeling ripped off, as you are the one who has to live in your home and you want to feel good about whatever it is that you have to use or look at every day- not regret it.

Sorry for the long post, I speak from experience and have seen it happen to many times as well.

Per all the raves on wsb I just tried to call Mr.Sparky/Eagle Electric and mis-dialed. I reached seattle electricians / electricians today. The receptionist was not very nice. I then called Mr.Sparky/Eagle Electric and got the best customer service any employer could hope to have….. I highly recommend them.

Second the recommendation for Brad Leff. He has completely rewired our house, getting rid of all the old knob & tube. He was a pleasure to work with, is extremely knowledgeable and his rates are reasonable. Highly recommend him!
