OK, let’s call it an eight-foot protection zone. I’m terrible with eyeball guesstimates.
As we know, some people didn’t want to keep the tree in the first place, because they felt it would shade too much of the arable space. So the pro- and anti-tree factions got together and worked out a compromise, which was to keep a grass perimeter around the tree. If the tree still perishes from root compaction, etc. the pro-tree folks will have the satisfaction of having tried.
And the anti-tree folks? They’ll be exuding tea and sympathy.
