WSB milestone

Money may not be able to buy happiness, or love, so it’s said, but in some cases, it can buy time. For us, money *from* WSB will buy more time we can devote *to* WSB. hotwire.jpgSo this morning, we are thrilled to welcome our first advertiser: HOTWIRE COFFEE, celebrating its fifth anniversary in that cool brick building by the Junction post office. We are grateful to Hotwire proprietor Lora Vickrey and our other sponsors-to-be for supporting WSB and our mission to offer you 24/7/365 West Seattle news, information, and discussion. Want to join them? More info on our new Advertising page; and for everybody here in WSB-land, here’s our commitment:

For WSB advertising, our priority is to offer space to local advertisers, businesses that offer goods and services to people in West Seattle. So far we’ve avoided the free-for-all type ads you see cluttering some sites. But for us to keep improving this site and offering you more 24/7/365 news, information, and discussion, we can’t be ad-free. We had a heartening response to WSB Pledge Day two months ago, yet user-paid content in general isn’t the way of the online world right now (subscriptions didn’t even work for big organizations like the New York Times), so we seek to follow in the pixelsteps of the handful of successful, self-sustaining “hyperlocal” news sites, mom-n-pop sites that have blazed new trails here and there around the country, such as Baristanet in NJ.

West Seattle is the city’s biggest neighborhood, both in population and acreage, so there’s a lot to cover, and we’ve barely scratched the proverbial surface. As our coverage volume increases, so does our visitor volume — in October, for example, each weekday averaged more than 3,000 homes/businesses (it’s tough to count individual people online — measurement systems note “IP addresses,” so several people at one home or business would count as only one “unique user”) and double that many pageviews. This was quadruple the total for last January, after steady growth all year long.

But enough about numbers. If we didn’t provide anything of interest or relevance to you, you’d be out of here, and we wouldn’t blame you. So please keep telling WSB editors what you want to know about, and best of all, sharing your stories, photos, and tips. And if you know someone whose business might benefit from advertising here, please point them to us — via this page, or by e-mailing our Sales Guy at salesguy@westseattleblog.com.

Thanks again for being there – WSB’s 2-year anniversary is around the corner, but since it’s become so much more than originally intended, every day feels like a brand-new start.

I’m thrilled for you. Anything that helps you have more time for WSB and supports our local businesses is great. Your my #1 source for all things West Seattle, I tell everyone about you. Thanks for all your hard work, news and community coverage.

Congrats! I think I’ll have a cup of joe at Hotwire this week to reward them (well, and myself…it’s good coffee).

I think this is wonderful…and definitely like the idea of WS businesses that cater to West Seattle. That was my intention since I became a massage therapist. I live and work in the community…and in turn get supported by the community. Of course, I never, ever turn down business from across the bridge ;-)

Perfect way to start out. Hotwire epititmizes everything that’s great about WS.

I was wondering when you’d start getting ads. It’s about time. Congratulations!

I’ve been to Hotwire a few times and each time I’ve been underwhelmed. But at least they’re a locally-owned small business. And I’m all for anything that generates revenue for West Seattle’s best news source!

    Sellout!

Love that you are finding a way to help pay for the blog. But why not join the legitimate media and be more transparent about who owns and edits the blog? You are becoming an important source of news and information for the community. Yet there is no one to hold accountable. If Fake Steve Jobs can go on a speaking tour, surely the WSB folks can come out from behind the curtain.

Bob, we hope to address that in relatively short order. We started out anonymously as just a little chatty blog but as people seeking, gathering, and reporting information, that status tends to be more of a hindrance than anything else.

Congrats WSB! I have to go to Hotwire now!

Just a quick devil’s-advocate question WSB: Is there some sort of non-censorship contract with your advertisers? Meaning, if one of your advertisers does a dirty deed, will it be reported on the blog? That aside, I’m all for WSB finding new sources of revenue, especially when they increase the focus on local businesses.

  • WSB November 5, 2007 (9:04 pm)

TVB, good point. We meant to include it in our ramble above. No censorship planned here. And anytime we write anything, good/bad/otherwise, that mentions someone who has advertising on WSB, they will be noted as such, same as you see in other media.

  • Lora Vickrey November 6, 2007 (6:35 am)

TVB, the WSB won’t need to worry about dirty deeds from HW. Gosh, the most anyone could expect is we may pour a heart on top of your latte instead of our usual leaf.

Oh Christopher, I wonder why you were underwhelmed? It takes a lot to be named the best coffee shop in West Seattle and if we didn’t meet you expectations then please let us know. Our little team of baristas really try to make everyone’s experience at HW the best.

This is the first time we’ve advertised and have mad love for the WSB.

Okay, when’s the WSB get-together/toga party? This milestone should be celebrated.

For someone using the name “Bob Loblaw” to throw stones about pseudonyms is pretty funny.

Sorry, comment time is over.
