Mayor to help celebrate Hi-Yu

Perhaps not surprising since WS is his backyard, of course, but still cool to hear the mayor will help commemorate West Seattle’s annexation centennial with a Hi-Yu appearance — click to read about it:

This is an e-mail received by a WSB reader and forwarded to us:

My name is Sharee Pierce and I work in Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels’ Office. I am writing to let you know about an ongoing project of ours.

Six of Seattle’s neighborhoods were annexed to the city 100 years ago. These include Ballard, Columbia City, Southeast Seattle, South Park, Ravenna, and the Mayor’s “home town” of West Seattle. The Mayor’s Office and the Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs is organizing events throughout the City to commemorate this important milestone.

On July 17, 2007, at 6:45 p.m., Mayor Nickels will open up the Hi-Yu Festival’s “Concert in the Park” at Hiawatha Park. During this time, the Mayor will also acknowledge and celebrate the unique history of West Seattle.

I invite you and members of your organization to join the Mayor and concert-goers in commemorating the 100th anniversary of the annexation of West Seattle and celebrating the heritage and cultural character of this remarkable neighborhood.

If you don’t like someone’s politics, why resort to smarmy, personal attacks? I have never been able to figure that out. Can you enlighten me, flipjack, capo, eric, Jiggers, etc?

hey…I guess I feel this way…I voted for him (who knew then?), so I can make any comment I want about him when he displeases me – if you didn’t vote you need to mind your own business, because you have no right to complain. Hizzoner has displeased a lot of people in West Seattle…however, I will namer namecall…

Jan. I do vote. Always. I don’t like Nickels’ politics. I just wondered why people have to resort to personal name-calling when they maybe ought to be commenting on how they don’t like his politics. One doesn’t have anything to do with the other. That’s how I see it, anyway.

Jo…my apologies. I wasn’t referring to you in particular when I said that. It was a more “in general” reference to those who might say things about politicians, and Hizzoner in particular. I don’t really see any “name calling” in the above comments. I see poeple unhappy with the way he has done things, so they are complaining about him in general. I agree, bringing his son into the mix has nothing to do with him. As our children grow, we realize that they go in the direction they want, and it’s sometimes not what we want. Greg Nickels is the same…and I’m sure he’s chagrined that his son too that turn in his life, but he will still abide by him.

Unfortunately, we sometimes can’t separate the politician from the human being, and that is reflected in the comments.
