ELECTION 2023: Teresa Mosqueda leads for King County Council District 8

8:25 PM: Tonight’s second-biggest race in our area is for the County Council District 8 seat that Joe McDermott is leaving after 13 years. In tonight’s first and only round of results, here’s where the race stands:

KING COUNTY COUNCIL DISTRICT 8
Teresa Mosqueda – 16,189 – 50.18%
Sofia Aragon – 15,929 – 49.37%

9:50 PM: Mosqueda, a citywide Seattle City Councilmember and North Delridge resident, spent Election Night at a party downtown, too far for us to go interview her, but she has sent a statement saying in part: “It’s been incredibly motivating to connect with community leaders and neighbors across this district. The outcome of this election is a testament to our campaign’s deep community engagement and collaborative work to support community-led solutions. Thank you to every endorsing community member, labor union, organization, small business, and elected leader who generously offered their time to help make this result possible. I appreciate your support and look forward to working together to deliver on diverse needs across District 8.”

Nosqueda! Holding out that Aragon pulls ahead & remains ahead! Nosqueda!

At first I thought you were rooting for Mosqueda because “Nos” means “us” in Spanish, so Nosqueda sounds like a term of endearment.

I almost always feel that most elections are a lose-lose situation because you normally have to pick from two bad choices. In this case I almost think that it is as close to a win-win election that I have seen in several years even if the actual candidates are less than inspiring. If Mosqueda wins, Seattle will be free of all the former council members if the current results hold true.  If she loses, Aragon will better represent us on the King County Council and Mosqueda will be the ineffective lone vote supporting criminals and disorder. In two years, we can cleanse the council fully.

This is the biggest surprise of the night. I just don’t understand why anyone would vote for Aragon, who engages in extreme retaliation against anyone who does anything to help homeless people. Aragon is a terrible person with no redeeming qualities as a public official.

Where in the world did you come up with that bitter drivel? I’m guessing you don’t even know her or her record or background.

Actually Mayor Aragon has the common sense to not fall for, or be pressured by King County to use Burien as a homeless dumping ground.  She has the safety and fiscal interests of Burien in mind by using her vote to tell KC to manage it’s own problems, and also knows there’s no such thing as Free money.  The offer presented will burden Burien with costs beyond what its budget can support and is just more proof KC and the Homeless Industrial Complex is mismanaged.  Burien knows better than to fall for the proverbial carrot because then KC will use the stick to beat them into submission.

I voted for Aragon based on her willingness to acknowledge that Seattle, King County have crime problems that need to be solved.   Solving problems is  the city council’s job not creating problems that adversely affect citizens’ safety.

I didn’t vote for Mosqueda but if she wins, at least it won’t be a voter mandate.

Wow. Do people actually think Mosqueda keeps our neighborhoods safer and crime free? What a time to be alive.

    • K November 8, 2023 (1:15 pm)

No, people understand that County Councilmembers are not law enforcement officers and don’t expect them to do things that are not their job.  What a time to be alive, indeed.
