WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Stolen Xtracycle cargo bicycle (update: found)

ORIGINAL MONDAY NIGHT REPORT: In the photo are Brad and kids on the cargo bike that he reports was stolen from the Water Taxi pier:

Black Xtracycle long tail/cargo bike. Lots of Seahawks stickers and had a Seattle Mariners flag sticking out the back. Had brand-new
hydraulic brakes and grips put on. Rode it for the last 10 years in the Admiral area and Junction, many times with little ones on the back.

We’ll add the police-report number when we get it.

TUESDAY UPDATE: Brad reports in comments that his wife found the bike in a west Alki rack.

    Check the RVs by Salty’s.

Check the RVs on Harbor Ave. Couple weeks ago a stolen Rad bike was found leaning against one of the RVs.

I’ve already mentioned that to Brad. Also – for those who bring it up in stolen-bike posts – bikeindex.org. But nothing beats actual local people who might see something their neighborhood or pass through an area, so thanks again to everyone who’s helped find stolen bikes, stolen cars, etc. in West Seattle over the years.

That sucks. I ride daily around here. I’ll keep an eye out. That’s a pretty easy bike to spot.

Glad this bike was found.  Today I saw a different black RadPower bike with a blue milk crate on the rear rack. It was outside an RV in front of Salty’s with a chain still around it. The RV owner was attempting to hammer the lock open with a concrete chisel. He stated he’d lost his key when I asked him where the bike had come from. It was an odd scene.

Look how happy those kids are. Who would steal that from them? Boo! Boo!

Someone just posted a very similar looking bike for sale on the Seattle Family Bike Swap Facebook group. They claim to have it in Columbia City and are asking $1850. The for sale pic shows a bike with a distinctive brown leather saddle with springs underneath- can’t tell if that matches yours from the pic here. If that’s yours, go get it. If not, maybe I just found you a replacement :)

THE BIKE WAS FOUND! My lovely wife found it down the street a block west of Cactus restaurant on a bike rack. Thank you all for the great advice, and of course our amazing friends at WSB!

      Glad to hear that!

Looks like they had it locked to the rack?

You won’t want your stolen bike to be taken by some other lowlife theif…  Remember the old saying: There is no honor among thieves.

Must’ve been a joyride situation. They abandoned the vehicle once they hit the retaining wall.

Wait, there has to be more to this story. It’s pretty wild and unusual. A thief took a $4000 bike at the water taxi (was it locked there?) rode it a short trip up Alki to Cactus, locked it responsibly to a high visibility rack in front of an always busy restaurant in sight of 100s of people. Then the owner of the bike finds it there hours later…and unlocks it and rides away and everything is ok? No thought about calling the cops to report it being found and follow up on a felony level theft in broad daylight, or waiting around to see who comes and unlocks or rides the bike away – and learn who stole the bike to begin with? Just, ‘oh there it is, let’s ride home now’? I’d love to hear the whole story.

The Bike was found unlocked near Cactus. The lock in the photo is mine that I put on after I moved it down the street to get a bite to celebrate.  Don’t know what transpired between when it was taken to when it was found, Just happy to have my bike back.

Ah! That makes sense. Thanks Brad. The photo had me confused. Great lock, btw. I’m sure you’re happy to have it back – quite the ride.

Sorry, comment time is over.
