UPDATE: Brush fire near Longfellow Creek

10:20 PM: Thanks to a texter for that photo. SFD is responding to what firefighters describe as a “pretty large brush fire” in the wooded area near Longfellow Creek east of Chief Sealth International High School.

10:31 PM: Firefighters are accessing the scene through the Longfellow Creek P-Patch off Thistle. No structures are reported to be threatened.

10:43 PM: The nearby resident who called it in (and sent the photo and video) says it looks like firefighters have it under control.

ADDED 11:32 AM MONDAY: Regarding the cause, SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo tells WSB, “Fire investigators were not dispatched for this incident. No injuries were reported and no other people were present when our crews arrived.”

Oh no. Longfellow Creek seems to be getting repeatedly abused this season. Our WS gem.

Any word on how it started

No idea exactly what happened, but I reported this to SFD.  It was the site of one of two tents in the woods.  We’d heard some booms that at first we thought were fireworks, but after a couple minutes it kept going so we looked outside and saw this.  It was pretty scary being so close to our home but thankfully with the rain lately, it was probably pretty damp back there.  In the middle of summer this could’ve been a very different story.

I’ve seen a homeless camp in this same place almost every time that I’ve walked the trail there, so I’d be willing to wager that it was the source of the fire.

way too damp for a fire to just spring up out of nowhere, no thoughts from FD on what may have caused this?

I’m asking. If there is any info, I will add.

THIS IS THE 3rd FIRE in the last WEEK in WEST SEATTLE. What is REALLY Going on ?      Is the Media going to give the Public Answers?

    • WSB March 30, 2020 (11:30 am)

Pardon me? What “answers”? Fires happen, for a variety of reasons. Many weeks go by with no fires.

We had this one, the marina fire, and the motor-home fire. No injuries BTW. Adding SFD’s response re: this one above. – TR

Correct …these are the 3 – The answers the public wants to know – what were the causes ? Was it arson ? Was it drug related ? Was it other ?  3 Fires in a few days in a limited geographical area is a concern…. Perhaps the police reports can indicate what they believe are the reasons….. Thank you for your time and quick response.

Sorry, comment time is over.
