TRAFFIC ALERT: Gatewood crash

Nasty-looking crash at 41st SW/SW Elmgrove in Gatewood a short time ago – but we are told no major injuries and no one will have to taken to the hospital. We’re mentioning it because 41st SW is a busier side street than most, including part of the 22 Metro bus route.

    Uncontrolled intersection?

Traffic on Elmgrove has stop signs, per Google Street View.

Elmgrove has a stop sign on 41st. It’s the only stop sign on Elmgrove between 35th SW and California SW

Looks like a somewhat high impact collision.

The air bags deployed, our photographer noted.

We are having a terrible time with teenagers racing in cars up and down California Ave S W between Alki and North Admiral.   We almost got t-boned at Ferry Avenue going north on California Ave S W as 4 teen boys in a small white car came racing up Ferry Ave right through the stop sign, then as we turned on Palm Ave S W, a smaller blue car with another group of teen boys were racing up Palm and we almost got hit from the front.   We are constantly hearing racers going up and down California Ave SW here in North Admiral.   Just hoping no one gets hurt.   We are sure the police are already aware of the situation.    It seems to really have become worse the last week with the weather warming.

People need to slow down, that is a residential neighborhood, drive like YOUR kids live there!

We now have more than a dozen lil kids on our block alone very close to there (one block away) and cars for some reason travel east west between 35 and California at speeds of 30 to 50 miles an hour. No exaggeration. Can someone tell me why? Also, would love information on how to put in a speed bump or other slow down. Anyone have success?

Speeding through res neighborhoods is apparently really common and I am obviously not the only one bothered by it.  I live one block off a major arterial and my street goes down a hill.  People going up the hill go 30-35, down the hill is another story normally 35-45.  At least a few times a day there is someone that passes by at what seems like 50-55+.  Whenever I ask about it I’m told there just isn’t enough resources but with a street where even the average mom with kids in the car is going 10 over it would seem as though ticket revenue would be more than enough to pay one cop to pick roads like mine and ticket drivers unrelentlessly.

jumping on the bandwagon – if anyone has had success or knows the process for petitioning for speed bumps (I tried talking with some neighborhood folks many moons ago and it just didn’t get anywhere) I’m happy to join the throng.  I live on 39th and I’m amazed there aren’t more accidents considering the speed folks fly down the hill.  But any of the Gatewood Hill streets I’m sure have similar dangerous situations.

I agree with the above comments as I’m on Elmgrove as well. Additionally, I know this particular intersection has a stop sign, but people need to stop flying through uncontrolled intersection in our neighborhood. Please understand the rules of an uncontrolled intersection… “When two vehicles approach or enter an intersection from different highways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.” (RCW 46.61.180)

To those commenters that are giving speeds.  Do you have a radar gun? Are you following them? Are you guessing? Note that it’s been stated here before that the MAJORITY of tickets handed out in neighborhoods are to people that live there: i/e your neighbors! If you really wanted change you wouldn’t be anonomusly blogging about it would you? You’d be flooding city council meetings, you’d be out side stores with initiative petitions to sign.  Real reason you never actually do anything:you aren’t “perfect” drivers yourselves. While you’d be happy to see “others” ticketed  YOU don’t want to be ticketed.

41st St between Thistle and Holden is particularly dangerous even though all cross streets (east/west streets) have stop signs at 41st. I have repeatedly seen drivers not stop or only slow down at those intersections. I have had to stop quickly several times to avoid accidents (while traveling north/south on 41st). It’s worrisome enough for me that I now take California to Holden. I’m sure the uncontrolled intersections are worse.

Sorry, comment time is over.
