West Seattle restaurants: Alki Subway ‘permanently closed’

subwaynote

That photo was tweeted by Lauren, one of multiple readers who reported today that the Subway shop at 2758 Alki Avenue SW is closed – “permanently,” according to the note on the door. We first reported in May 2013 that Subway would be the first tenant in a building that until then had been vacant for almost three years since its construction; the sandwich shop opened in August 2013. We weren’t able to reach the company to find out if another franchisee is being sought. One of West Seattle’s four remaining Subways, the one at Jefferson Square, is listed as looking for another operator.

We walked by last Saturday afternoon and my husband wondered why it was closed.  There was no sign.

Alki is a unique place and it needs unique businesses that can’t be found elsewhere  (or everywhere)

I agree. I feel bad for the employees and owners but I would really prefer a restaurant that has character and is owned by a West Seattle resident.

Just one datapoint on this … you might be speaking from personal knowledge so if so, sorry, but … a franchisee of a chain COULD be a local resident. I tried looking up the franchisee for this one and oddly haven’t found the City of Seattle business license yet, neither under the address nor under Subway in general, so I don’t know. Local franchisee, of course, doesn’t necessarily negate other aspects of chains … related to our industry, for example, most chains don’t advertise with local publications; Subway, for example, seems to rely on billboards and TV, which means their advertising dollars go to national megacorporations. Anyway, we’ll be checking with Subway corporate HQ on Monday to see if they are seeking a new franchisee for the space. – TR

a place like Subway need parking, and there is none. You want to be able to  park, go in, order, and get out quickly. Doesn’t work when you have to park blocks away.  Once summer is over, it’s not a demand. I heard that last winter they didn’t do much business.

I’m sorry to say that I had a couple of negative experiences with the customer service at this location. Hopefully they’ll replace it with a place that has more character as per DHG’s comment.

Going against the grain here, but there’s only one decent place to get a sandwich in W. Seattle, and it can be a long wait at Husky deli. for that reason, and no other, I’m sad to see it go.

Sub Shop #9 on California Ave isn’t too bad – you should check it out once if you haven’t yet. Quick, affordable and delicious sandwiches that are fresh.

Pcc and Qfc both have delicious sandwiches.

Another big second for PCC sandwiches, and Metros as well. Freshys makes sandwiches, and Luna Park makes a wicked club sandwich. Husky has great sandwiches.

I’m more concerned that people lost their jobs than moaning over it not being a hipster food joint.

Never tried subshop in Westwood village? subway falls way short.

I’ve never been a fan of any Subway. Their sandwiches are just so-so. The Alki one was a poor location for this. People will not drive, park, and walk blocks to grab a quick bite and there is not a winter-time clientele to sustain it.  As others have pointed out, there are other alternatives. There is also an independent sub shop on California Ave. just north of Morgan street that has been there for years. At least I believe it’s still open. It’s a shame about the people losing their jobs.

I only eat at a Subway if there is absolutely nothing else around. Everything is so bland and boring. The Super Deli on 35th and Barton has great sanwiches. You can even order a cold beer and drink it there too!

West Seattle needs a good sandwich shop. The grab and go items at supermarkets, even the more expensive versions pale in comparison to a real sandwich.

As someone living near alki, this was a quick, cheap place to stop by and grab a decent sandwich.  It is also quick and cheap for many people walking and visiting alki.  While I do like unique restaurants, I hope something that offers similar value and convenience takes this location.  Yes, there are several better sandwich shops in west Seattle, but if you want a quick, easy sandwich while you are near alki, you aren’t going to drive to the other side of west Seattle to go to husky deli (or even qfc).

Try the sandwiches from Morgan Thriftway.  They’re great.

Please let the Fatburger be next.  Worst service (and burger) ever.

    • terbana November 13, 2016 (9:15 am)

agreed – Fatburger is horrible.  Replace it with Five-Guys.  And put in a bagel sandwich shop in place of Subway.

  • waikikigirl November 13, 2016 (11:19 am)

Terbana…agree with you PLEASE put in a bagel sandwich shop one like ZATZ A BETTER BAGEL!!!! And as for Five Guys, I have never been to one but the hubby and dad in law has and they both said it was so loud in there you couldn’t even talk to each other…something to do with the chairs scraping across the floors and the employees yelling and screaming…orders or whatever???

    • terbana November 18, 2016 (2:50 pm)

YES!  Just like Zatz.  And for Five-Guys … after thinking about it – maybe not –  Blue Moon is good.  So who knows – Maybe a pottery painting place like the one in U-Village.

Sorry, comment time is over.
