West Seattle Crime Watch: 4 suspects arrested in 2 interrupted incidents; plus, two 3 reader reports

Tonight’s West Seattle Crime Watch starts with two incidents today/tonight that resulted in arrests:

CAR-PROWL SUSPECT ARRESTED: Thanks to several people asking us about an incident near 20th/Thistle (map) tonight, we’ve been able to get information from police: An area resident saw someone “prowling inside her car” and confronted the man, who threatened her, showing what “appeared to be a weapon in his waistband.” He then took off. At some point, police were called and responded with a K-9 team; the dog found the suspect, and he was arrested.

BURGLARY INTERRUPTED: Also interrupted, a break-in at a home in the 6000 block of 26th SW (map) this afternoon. We’ve confirmed details with police on this one as well: Someone in the house heard glass breaking and hid while calling police. They arrived and saw three suspects flee. They chased and caught two nearby; the third fled westward to High Point, and other officers found him there, also with the help of a K-9. Police say one of the suspects had a cut hand, from broken glass; some stolen property was recovered; and one suspect threatened to kill an officer. All three were booked into jail.

And two three reader reports:

VANDALISM: According to a texter, taggers vandalized garage doors overnight along the 47th SW alley between Stevens and Lander (map). It’s been reported to police.

PLANT THEFT: CR reports from north of Morgan Junction:

Our green ceramic glazed pot (about 16″ tall) with 1 foot tall “lemon cypress” was stolen from the 5900 block of California Avenue SW (map). The ceramic pot is located on our main entrance door of our townhouse. It was stolen between nighttime of December 26 to early morning of December 27.

ADDED 3:10 AM – CAR PROWLS: Just got a text (206-293-6302 any time) that two cars had been prowled on 45th between Hanford and Hinds a short time ago. Police were called and are there now.

    Way to go SPD!

Just saw this — we actually called 911 tonight around 8:45pm. We returned home after dinner out to a suspicious gentleman in the alley (between 32nd Ave SW & 34th). Yo husband watched him secretly as he slipped in and out of backyards. He decided to get a vehicle and take a trip north up the alley. Minutes later I saw the man out front on 32nd heading south to Holden. Odd behavior and very interested in looking at every house. 911 was very responsive and I did see an officer come through. If anyone in the area reports a car prowl or break-in tonight… Please contact me for a description.

  • Captain90s December 28, 2014 (11:15 pm)

Wow, close to home, both of them! Sunrise Heights, you’re also very close to me, I will keep an eye out, we’re right on the alley between 35th/34th.

Threatening to kill a police officer… Not too bright. Way to go SPD, and keep up the good work!

  • Mr. Matt December 29, 2014 (1:30 am)

Wonder if the car prowler is the same jerkwad that broke into my car and stole my ipod classic and baseball mitts a couple weeks back… >:(

  • Lily December 29, 2014 (4:24 am)

Way to go SPD. Love the cops!!!

  • Mike December 29, 2014 (4:32 am)

Christmas eve I caught a guy breaking in my truck about 6 in the morning, when I confronted him he pulled weapon out of his waste band and fled, he also broke into my neighbors garage and cut the wires to my security camera. I did see what the suspect look like, can I get description of the suspect?

  • ScubaFrog December 29, 2014 (5:45 am)

    Fantastic SPD :)

  • Arnold December 29, 2014 (7:15 am)

Glad to hear these thugs were caught. Can’t help but wonder if they were the same punks that burglarized my neighbors. Throw away the key!

  • SomeGuy December 29, 2014 (7:40 am)

Mike, what type of weapon did he have?

  • Kayo December 29, 2014 (7:43 am)

So glad the burglars were caught, especially since this is just a few blocks away from my house. Sounds like they were not too bright breaking into a house on a Sunday afternoon and then threatening an officer. Good job, SPD!

As I read it, the prowler threatened the woman who confronted him, not a police officer. Then a second instance where a prowler displays a weapon when confronted by a citizen. People should be very careful about challenging crooks. I don’t know what the police say to do in situations like this, but it seems to me that yelling loudly from a safe distance or a protected/shielded location would serve the same purpose of scaring off the prowler.

    • WSB December 29, 2014 (9:39 am)

The threat to kill an officer is in the second summary, the 26th SW daytime break-in attempt, not the first one, the nighttime car prowl, in which the victim reported being threatened by the interrupted prowler. I was able to reach police late last night and asked whether the burglary, which was unfolding hours earlier, had resulted in arrests – I was going to write this, otherwise, saying that we likely would not be able to find that out until today. Quoting the response: “One suspect made threats to kill one of the officers, stating it was not a threat, but a promise.”

  • Mike December 29, 2014 (10:03 am)

It looked like a gun from the distance, but I didnt stick around to find out. It was a white male early 20’s, around 6 feet tall with a black beenie on his head.

  • Sunrise Heights December 29, 2014 (10:26 am)

The gentlemen we saw was mid 20s, brown skin tone, dark jacket, backpack and white/red baseball cap. The description was also given to 911.

    • WSB December 29, 2014 (11:35 am)

I’m out and can’t easily add the links until back at HQ bur FYI both of the first two incidents here were just written up by SPD public affairs for SPD Blotter http://spdblotter.seattle.gov

  • tara December 29, 2014 (11:44 am)

we had what sounds like the same jerk break into my fiance car on christmas eve morning at 6am!!
SPD did reply quickly, I can sleep better knowing they caught him!
my fiance said it was a white guy in dark clothing.

  • JTB December 29, 2014 (12:25 pm)

Thanks for correcting my error, Tracy. Wow, that is awful. I wonder if there are or if not, could be, penalties for threatening a law officer?

  • East Coast Cynic December 29, 2014 (12:51 pm)

@Mike, A beatnik criminal? A big change from hoodies and baseball caps.

  • Rachel December 29, 2014 (3:48 pm)

I live on 24th and Thistle. When I left for work today, I saw that my car had been “broken into” (I had left the doors unlocked). Luckily, I never have anything of monetary value in my car. They just took my 2 yr old’s nursery rhyme CD’s.
I didn’t drive at all yesterday, so it could have happened Saturday or Sunday night. So violating.

  • Sade December 29, 2014 (10:34 pm)

Our car was stolen off of 44th between hinds and Hanford – likely the morning of the 29th (between 7-9am). Were the prowlers found from the two reports on 45th?

  • WS LOCAL December 30, 2014 (6:24 am)

So sick of the rising crime in West Seattle. My once beautiful neighborhood is now considered dangerous. UGH

  • tara December 30, 2014 (9:35 am)

I just moved here now I’m very disappointed in the crime we’ve experienced. Can’t we rally together as a community, get more cops out there , crime watch people or something? We can’t let these thugz, win!

    • WSB December 30, 2014 (9:40 am)

Join your Block Watch or form one if there isn’t one – that’s step one. And get involved in the two local groups focused on crime prevention/safety – most community groups take December off, so they didn’t meet this month, but next month, 7 pm third Tuesday is the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council, fourth Tuesday is the West Seattle Block Watch Captains Network ( http://wsblockwatchnet.wordpress.com ), 6:30 pm at the precinct. – TR

  • G December 30, 2014 (10:56 am)

    Sade,

I’m so sorry! I live on 44th too within a block of you. How much MORE crime will I see in my neighborhood??? I no longer have packages delivered to my porch, I worry about every sound at night. And no, I’m no shrinking violet. INSANE.

  • tara December 30, 2014 (1:21 pm)

yeah our neighborhood has a damn watch already sorry I’m just pissed!! our neighbor is the head lead or whatever. I hope after the holiday we have a meeting.
I”ll def go to the WSCPC meeting you mentioned above @tr? thank you

  • Laura December 30, 2014 (11:03 pm)

To commenter Sunrise Heights. I live on 32nd and want to thank-you for the update. I would like to know the cross street. I am frequently out walking a dog after dark and will be keeping an eye out. My back yard is on that alley.

  • Rachel December 31, 2014 (4:15 pm)

For the second time in 3 days, my car was broken into on 24th and Thistle. Again, I left it unlocked and there is nothing of value (for anyone else), but the stuff left in my glovebox-napkins, pens, CDs-were strewn about.
At least no damage to the car, but still disheartening.

  • WTF January 7, 2015 (6:21 am)

First of all, I want to let the terrified woman whose house was broken into while she was home that (we) are thinking of you and praying that someday you’ll feel safe in your own home. Secondly, great job by SPD who get crapped on by this city everyday; respected when it’s convenient. Thank you! I’m so glad these PsOS were caught. I can’t imagine being home if someone broke into my home…I’m waiting (anxiously) for the time we read that the homeowner took care of business himself.

Sorry, comment time is over.
