Summer’s not here yet, but it’s fall-signup time for West Seattle Soccer Club

Even with summer still a few weeks away, it’s fall-registration season for West Seattle Soccer Club, and they’re asking everyone to register early – not just players, but also coaches and volunteers. Players who sign up by June 30th get “priority placement on their former teams,” per the WSSC announcement. Sign up online at westseattlesoccer.org. (And when you do, you get to buy the new WSSC scarf for $10 – more pics on the club’s Facebook page.)

I am new to kids soccer – can someone explain objectively what the pros/cons would be to have my son join this league over say the YMCA? Thanks!

WSSC is awesome, my son played with the Y one year and then we went to WSSC last fall. Great coaches that love to teach soccer to the young ones. Also Bill Fry that runs it is one of the best!!

Thanks for alerting the community to our fall registration event, WSB!! I appreciate Tony’s kind words that mention me by name, but any praise belongs to the amazing WSSC administrative team and over 300 volunteers that make our programs possible. I suspect “curious” was hoping for a bit more detail? I’m a YMCA member myself and have only praise for the staff and programs offered by our local YMCA. As an active volunteer for the WSSC, I may not be objective, but I can articulate a few key differences that might be instructive to curious and other readers.

The first thing you need to know is that the WSSC does not currently offer a soccer experience for players younger than 5 years old. I believe the YMCA accepts players as young as 3. We promote the YMCA as a method of introducing very young players to the game of soccer, and the YMCA also helped introduce my own children to swimming, baseball, basketball, indoor soccer, and karate.

The West Seattle Soccer Club’s sole mission is to provide the best possible youth SOCCER experience to players 5-18+ years of age. Our focus on youth soccer (as our vehicle to promote healthy youth and a better community) provides several compelling advantages over our friends in the YMCA including scaled-play, a longer season, access to camps and technical training for a richer soccer experience, and the opportunity to enjoy youth soccer from its simplest form to competitive team play through high school.

You will find detailed information about our programs on our website: http://www.westseattlesoccer.org. And, of course, our WSSC volunteer team welcomes the opportunity to answer all of your questions at wsscboard@gmail.com.

Yours in soccer, (and in praise of healthy youth and a better community)
