Tonight’s high-school football: WSHS, SLHS wins; Sealth loss

First high-school-football score in for the night – Close game at Southwest Athletic Complex; West Seattle High School beats Nathan Hale, 21-20. That’s our featured game tonight; video and summary to come. According to our partners at the Seattle Times, Seattle Lutheran won at North Beach (in Ocean Shores), 35-0, while Sealth lost at Ingraham, 39-6.

ADDED 11:59 PM: Summary/video from WSHS game:

From WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand, who covered the game at SWAC:

The healthiest and hardiest-looking West Seattle High football team to take the field in a couple of years managed to hang on and win their home opener against Nathan Hale on Friday night, 21-20.

While West Seattle ended the first half with a 6-0 lead, the Raiders came out and ate up most of the third quarter on only three drives, one from an recovered onside kick. While West Seattle answered one third-quarter Hale touchdown with one of their own, the Wildcats began the fourth quarter down by one touchdown.

West Seattle took the lead back in the fourth quarter after a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Hale moved the ball down the field in the fourth quarter, but an interception by West Seattle’s Kris Kellogg with less than two minutes to go gave the ball back to the Wildcats, who went down the field, picking up a first down, which led to quarterback Isaac Johnson taking a knee to end the game.

The ground game was key for both teams. The two standouts in tonight’s game were both running backs. West Seattle’s Nikko Emm carried the ball for 101 yards, while Hale’s Nick Castoriano had 133.

Good job West Seattle. We went to the game and it was a gutsy, come-from-behind win for West Seattle thanks to Issac Johnson passing to George Edwards for the go ahead touchdown and 2-point conversion.

Then the defense sealed the win with a big interception and the o-line dominated the final 3 minutes by controlling the line and letting West Seattle run out the clock!

Congrats to the coaching staff on winning your first game! The community is proud of you!

I could ramble on forever about the improvement from last year to this year. All of my rambling could likely, however, be summed up in a simple statement that I could not have made last year:

The West Seattle High School Wildcats are a very well coached football team.

Who is on the new coaching staff? I’ve looked everywhere and cant find anything.

Dominic Yarrington is the new football coach a WSHS. Don’t know who else is on the staff.

Robby: WSHS is Coached by Dominic Yarrington- a smart coach and a quality guy. Assisting him is a cast that is familiar w/ WSHS, including the head coach from 1992-2007, Tom Burggraff, two other former WS assistants who went on to Head Coach jobs but are back(Fritz Martin, Bob Dowding), and a couple of very experienced WS assistants who are back after a couple years off. It’s easily 100+ years of experience on that sideline (makes it hard to explain some of the goofs, but that’s football!) Hale is also a well-coached team (NH Coach Hopkins assisted at WS several years ago too)explaining why this was such a well-fought game. WSHS’s biggest challenge was in having 17 players to use. An all-out, two way effort by a kid is always a challenge, and will be the challenge next week as well (although the numbers should will be coming up as other players heal or become eligible).

I know a lot of the school is helping coach, like Coach Foster, Coach Ursino and Coach Burgraff.

It’s great to see coaches who also work at the school working with the kids and holding them accountable on the field, in the classroom and in the hallways!

Way to go West Seattle! Great way to start the season!

Thanks Mr. U! Good to see Coach Burggraff back with the team. I enjoyed playing for him and Coach Hopkins back in the day. There was also this one guy who taught chemistry that was pretty fun to play for too….
