Teepa Snow: Caring for those with Dementia @ Providence Mount St. Vincent7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Providence Mount St. Vincent will once again bring dementia care educator Teepa Snow to Seattle to train caregivers how to care for those living with dementia.
Snow will offer three free workshops. All will take place at the Providence Mount St. Vincent Chapel – 3rd floor, 4831 35th Ave SW, Seattle.
These presentations are ideal for professional and family caregivers helping a loved one living with dementia at home or other living situations such as assisted living facilities or nursing homes.
Session one, “The ABCs of Dementia and Caregiving,” will be held Tuesday, June 18, 2013, from 7 to 9 pm. No RSVP is needed.
Session two, “Focus on activities: What’s cooking and activities and programming for men,” will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2013, from 8 am to 12 pm. RSVP requested for those staying for lunch (small charge, cash or check only).
Session three, “Focus on caregiving tasks and getting the person clean and mouth care,” will be held Wednesday June 19, 2013, from 1 to 5 pm. RSVP requested for those staying for lunch (small charge, cash or check only).
Teepa Snow has worked for more than 30 years in geriatrics, receiving local, statewide and national recognition for her expertise in geriatrics, dementia care and staff training. She has developed two training videos, published many articles, and presents on a variety of topics.
Snow’s workshops on caring for those with memory problems have been offered across the country. They help caregivers better understand dementia conditions and the symptoms that accompany them and provide tools and knowledge to help caregivers better interact and communicate with those they care for. Caregivers will learn how to provide care without taking over and will be encouraged to take care of themselves and reach out to others to form stronger ties and support. Whether a professional or family caregiver, a volunteer or a student, this workshop will be valuable to you.

It’s every Wednesday night at 8:30 pm (going on five years now). It goes until a little after 10 pm. It’s $2 per person, and we have nomaximum or minimum team size. We usually get between 75 and 115 people. I give out cash prizes to the top 3 teams and bottles of champagne for the bottom three teams. Every season I have a special seasonal challenge that culminates in a $3 per person championship night. The Winter Challenge for 2013 starts next week.

Fully backlined open mic at Skylark starts at 9pm, ages 21+. Our Open Mic rules! There is no host to hog the spotlight, just a friendly sound engineer. You do a quick line check, introduce yourself to the audience, and get right to performing your 15-minute set (three songs is a good estimate since that includes set up and break down time).
Sign-up sheet goes out every Wednesday at 8:00pm sharp (trivia will still be in progress so don’t be alarmed). You must be present in person to sign up for an open mic slot. The only exception is bands on tour who have made arrangements in advance for a particular time.
We are set up for full bands of any genre, singer/songwriters, and pretty much anything else unplugged or plugged. Our backline is one bass amp, two guitar amps, one full drum set, and multiple mics/micstands and music stands. Additional details here.

The class, as always, is open to anyone curious about the marvelous art of Tai Chi. All we ask is that you dress for the weather and bring friends. The main focus of the class is in teaching people what they can do to improve the basic quality of daily life, i.e. smoother, deeper breathing, a more stable sense of balance, how to let stress pass by us rather than trapping it in our bodies, etc. We will be out in the fresh air, having a grand time and maybe even learning something before we’re done.

The Seattle Rainmakers play Ultimate Frisbee @ Southwest Athletic Complex1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Major League Ultimate (MLU) is establishing one of its eight professional ultimate frisbee teams in the Seattle area. The Seattle Rainmakers join the MLU’s Western Conference, and kick off their season on April 20th against the Vancouver Nighthawks at SWAC (Southwest Athletic Complex).
The regular season schedule runs from April 20 through June 22. Games are played at the Southwest Athletic Complex near Chief Sealth High School, and tickets are available for $16. Discounts are available for students and children. See the season schedule (with ticketing links) by going here.
The Seattle Rainmakers are coached by the highly decorated Ben Wiggins, a participant in, and coach of, elite ultimate in the northwest for the better part of the last decade. Wiggins has won awards at the highest level of collegiate ultimate, taken three club championships with Seattle’s premier club team, Seattle Sockeye, and has two World Championship silver medals to his name.
“Seattle has an amazing Ultimate community,” said Wiggins. “Hopefully the Rainmakers can show them something new that also embodies a love for the game wherever we play.”
Wiggins selected a 25-man roster in mid-March following a comprehensive two-day combine that tested participants on speed, strength, agility and disc skills. The resulting team is deep on talent, athleticism and, perhaps most importantly, experience.
“I think the Rainmakers are right there talent-wise with the best teams in the league,” said General Manager Max Vitali. “When you look at the years of experience a lot of these players bring and combine it with the pedigree of our coaching staff, it’s tough to find another team in the league that looks better on paper than us.”
Vitali is looking forward to watching his team in action, and has high hopes for their prospects in this inaugural season. More than that, he’s excited to bring a fast-growing sport to the city of Seattle.
“The fans in Seattle have absolutely blown us away over the last several months. We’re overjoyed that we can showcase the next phase of ultimate in their city, and we’re looking forward to bringing home the MLU’s first championship trophy later this summer.”

We have had a busy and productive Spring beginning with our membership informational launch. Over the month of May, we saw many of you at Gathering of Neighbors, West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, “We Heart Co-ops!” Seattle Greendrinks celebration with SLICE and YES magazine, and the West Seattle Bee Festival and Parade.
We have a lot of fun ahead of us this summer as we attend community events, visit with our neighbors, and continue to promote our healthy food co-op. We have an incredible group of generous volunteers and invite more of you to join us to see how you can help.
We thank those of you who have already pledged their donations towards a co-op membership. We encourage you to make your commitment to be a founding member of this unique and valuable asset to our community. Currently, donations and pledges towards co-op member/owner shares can be made by cash, check, or credit/debit cards at our public meetings and the Delridge Grocery booth at many upcoming community events. It’s every Wednesday night at 8:30 pm (going on five years now). It goes until a little after 10 pm. It’s $2 per person, and we have nomaximum or minimum team size. We usually get between 75 and 115 people. I give out cash prizes to the top 3 teams and bottles of champagne for the bottom three teams. Every season I have a special seasonal challenge that culminates in a $3 per person championship night. The Winter Challenge for 2013 starts next week.

Fully backlined open mic at Skylark starts at 9pm, ages 21+. Our Open Mic rules! There is no host to hog the spotlight, just a friendly sound engineer. You do a quick line check, introduce yourself to the audience, and get right to performing your 15-minute set (three songs is a good estimate since that includes set up and break down time).
Sign-up sheet goes out every Wednesday at 8:00pm sharp (trivia will still be in progress so don’t be alarmed). You must be present in person to sign up for an open mic slot. The only exception is bands on tour who have made arrangements in advance for a particular time.
We are set up for full bands of any genre, singer/songwriters, and pretty much anything else unplugged or plugged. Our backline is one bass amp, two guitar amps, one full drum set, and multiple mics/micstands and music stands. Additional details here.

Enjoy the exhibition celebrating the Alki Lighthouse’s centennial celebration, featuring artifacts, rare photos, memorabilia and artwork, all focused on telling the store of the lighthouse. Open House: 2013 Port Emissions Reduction Strategy Update @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
Northwest Ports Reduce Diesel Emissions, Set Further Goals for 2020. 2013 Strategy Update outlines ways to further reduce port-related air emissions
The Port of Seattle, Port of Tacoma and Port Metro Vancouver, Canada, are setting draft goals to reduce diesel emissions by 75 percent per ton of cargo by 2015 and 80 percent by 2020. Combined with projected cargo growth, this will result in overall reductions of 70 percent by 2015 and 75 percent by 2020.
The goals are part of the draft 2013 Update of the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy released today. The Ports will accept public comments on the draft strategy through July 26, through open houses, in-person, mail, or online.

“The good news is that emissions are down and in this Strategy Update we are setting more aggressive goals for the near future,” said Stephanie Jones Stebbins, Director of Environmental and Planning at the Port of Seattle. “The draft Strategy Update includes both aggressive reduction goals and sector-specific actions to meet those goals.”
The 2013 Update was developed based on the results of the 2011 Puget Sound Maritime Air Emissions Inventory released last October. The inventory found maritime-related air pollution has decreased since 2005, with much of the progress due to significant, voluntary investments of the maritime industry and government agencies in cleaner technology, cleaner fuels and more efficient systems of operation.
“To thrive and prosper, we need healthy air to breathe as well as economic opportunity,” said Andrew Green, Air Quality Programs Director with the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. “We support our ports’ commitments to cut
diesel exhaust and greenhouse gas pollution. Achieving the Strategy Update’s goals will ensure our region remains a healthy thriving place to live, breathe and do business.”To develop and implement the 2007 Strategy and this 2013 Strategy Update, the three ports partnered with other government agencies responsible for protecting air quality in the airshed: Environment Canada and Metro Vancouver in Canada along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington State Department of Ecology and Puget Sound Clean Air Agency in the U.S. The airshed centers on the marine area known as the Salish Sea and includes the Strait of Juan de Fuca, greater Puget Sound area, Strait of Georgia, Haro Strait, Boundary Pass, Rosario Strait and other nearby waterways.
“Air quality affects our entire region, and we pride ourselves on working collaboratively with a range of partners—from other ports and air agencies to our customers and vendors—to improve the environment and protect human health while providing a healthy supply chain,” said Jason Jordan, Director of Environmental Programs at the Port of Tacoma. “The cooperative effort that launched the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy several years ago remains intact and strong today.”
Ports are a critical part of the Pacific Northwest and North American economy, facilitating the movement of people and goods and supporting living-wage jobs. With their tenants and customers, the three ports use
diesel-powered ships, trains, trucks and other equipment to move goods and passengers through the ports to other destinations. The Strategy creates an integrated approach to improve air quality and reduce port-related
emissions in the shared airshed to safeguard public health and the environment while supporting economic growth.The public is invited to comment on the draft 2013 Update from June 11 to July 26. Comments will be accepted at open houses hosted by the ports of Seattle and Tacoma in June and July.

The program starts at 6 pm with a no-host bar social hour and a buffet dinner at 6:30 followed by the talk at 7. The ‘Hood Hunt: West Seattle @ Junction Plaza Park12:00 pm – 2:30 pm
WHAT: The ‘Hood Hunts are a series of FREE map-based scavenger hunts, held in various neighborhoods in the Seattle area. This is a community-inspired, grassroots effort, where the participants take turns “hosting” each hunt, so we try to keep these as simple as possible, for both participants and our volunteer hosts. The 27th ‘Hood Hunt is coming to West Seattle!
Here’s how it works: Show up at the suggested meeting time and location, and bring a copy of the map & questions (provided on the website). Each neighborhood map covers about a half to a full square mile and contains twenty checkpoints. Find as many checkpoints as you wish, and return to the finish. Afterward, we’ll find a place to hang out and share our routes, stories, and votes for our favorite checkpoint locations.
You can go solo, or with a team of friends and family. You can go by foot, bike, scooter, whatever! (Most people go by foot).

This will take the place of our regular monthly Westwood/Roxhill/Arbor Heights (WWRHAH) Community Council meeting. Please take the time to attend this very important community discussion, as it affects and impacts every single one of us that lives in these neighborhoods. People from all neighborhoods are welcome to attend.
Why you should be aware of what is happening, in addition:
If you are a bus commuter, you may see longer delays between bus service or your bus stop may be removed. Your bus route itself may be removed.
If you are a car commuter, the traffic for your drive and travel time WILL increase if the buses are cut. Nearly all West Seattle bus commuters own cars–we’ll be forced back into those cars.
If you commute toward the direction of downtown, the West Seattle Bridge and 1st Avenue South Bridge will become choke points.
Combine this bus route cutting with the SR-99 Viaduct going away soon for our new Deep Bore Tunnel, and it will get ugly trying to drive out of West Seattle.Here are the proposed bus service reductions from a graphic that King County Metro created. Red lines will be cut. Blue lines will be reduced service.

Every season I have a special seasonal challenge that culminates in a $3 per person championship night. The Winter Challenge for 2013 starts next week.

Fully backlined open mic at Skylark starts at 9pm, ages 21+. Our Open Mic rules! There is no host to hog the spotlight, just a friendly sound engineer. You do a quick line check, introduce yourself to the audience, and get right to performing your 15-minute set (three songs is a good estimate since that includes set up and break down time).
Sign-up sheet goes out every Wednesday at 8:00pm sharp (trivia will still be in progress so don’t be alarmed). You must be present in person to sign up for an open mic slot. The only exception is bands on tour who have made arrangements in advance for a particular time.
We are set up for full bands of any genre, singer/songwriters, and pretty much anything else unplugged or plugged. Our backline is one bass amp, two guitar amps, one full drum set, and multiple mics/micstands and music stands. Additional details here.

West Seattle 4th of July Kids’ Parade @ Sunset SW to Hamilton Viewpoint Park10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Start decorating your scooters, strollers, and trikes right now! The Admiral Kids 4th of July Parade starts at 10:00 am on the corner of 44th and Sunset. Walk the parade route, then enjoy traditional games and treats at Hamilton Viewpoint Park. Rain will cancel the games. Concessions will be provided by the Admiral Neighborhood Association.
Please support the parade with a $1 contribution per child. Look for the red boxes at the parade start and finish.
The parade starts at the intersection of 44thh & Sunset (in front of 1137 Sunset Ave SW). The parade is about a ½ mile walk through the neighborhood, crossing California Ave SW, and ending at Hamilton Viewpoint Park. Kids are encouraged to dress up and decorate strollers, scooters, wagons, and bikes. There will be fun old-fashioned games at Hamilton Park (3-legged race, wheelbarrow races, and gunnysack races). Games will be cancelled if there is rain (no rain allowed).

The main focus of the class is in teaching people what they can do to improve the basic quality of daily life, i.e. smoother, deeper breathing, a more stable sense of balance, how to let stress pass by us rather than trapping it in our bodies, etc. We will be out in the fresh air, having a grand time and maybe even learning something before we’re done.
When: We begin class at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday April 6th, 2013 and continue until September 28th, 2013
Where: We meet just West of the Statue of Liberty, but will move the class up or down the beach to accommodate the many festivals that occur during Summer.

In order to improve the North Delridge neighborhood, the North Delridge Neighborhood Council (NDNC) will be hosting monthly beautification projects!
Every 1st Saturday of the month, the NDNC and volunteers will gather to beautify a different area of North Delridge.
Our next beautification project May 4th will be cleaning the path from Skylark to Spokane Street!

Fully backlined open mic at Skylark starts at 9pm, ages 21+. Our Open Mic rules! There is no host to hog the spotlight, just a friendly sound engineer. You do a quick line check, introduce yourself to the audience, and get right to performing your 15-minute set (three songs is a good estimate since that includes set up and break down time).
Sign-up sheet goes out every Wednesday at 8:00pm sharp (trivia will still be in progress so don’t be alarmed). You must be present in person to sign up for an open mic slot. The only exception is bands on tour who have made arrangements in advance for a particular time.
We are set up for full bands of any genre, singer/songwriters, and pretty much anything else unplugged or plugged. Our backline is one bass amp, two guitar amps, one full drum set, and multiple mics/micstands and music stands. Additional details here.

Enjoy the exhibition celebrating the Alki Lighthouse’s centennial celebration, featuring artifacts, rare photos, memorabilia and artwork, all focused on telling the store of the lighthouse. Our weekly tastings are featured each Friday evening at Bin 41 in the West Seattle Junction from 6-7:30 pm.We also host a tasting each month during the West Seattle Art Walk, the second Thursday from 6-9 pm. We sometimes feature tastings on other nights when a special winemaker comes into town. Times may vary as noted in tasting descriptions below.
Our goal is to share with the community and to provide an inviting environment to experience the diversity of wines available globally. We will be hosting weekly tastings to provide an opportunity to sample a wide variety of wines for finding the one’s that best fit your palate. You will have access to the winemakers or distributors to learn more about the personality behind what’s in the bottle. Because we believe in the social aspect of food and wine, we will share recommended recipes or food pairings when possible.

The class, as always, is open to anyone curious about the marvelous art of Tai Chi. All we ask is that you dress for the weather and bring friends. The main focus of the class is in teaching people what they can do to improve the basic quality of daily life, i.e. smoother, deeper breathing, a more stable sense of balance, how to let stress pass by us rather than trapping it in our bodies, etc. We will be out in the fresh air, having a grand time and maybe even learning something before we’re done.
When: We begin class at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday April 6th, 2013 and continue until September 28th, 2013
Where: We meet just West of the Statue of Liberty, but will move the class up or down the beach to accommodate the many festivals that occur during Summer.
