Quick, mow the lawn! Google Street View’s still here

Google Street View is still making the rounds in West Seattle. Above, we caught it on camera as it passed WSB HQ back on Tuesday; today, we’ve had reports from Alki and Admiral. If you don’t use Google Maps, the Street View car has special camera technology to capture a 360-plus view of everything it passes – which is then immortalized into the mapping system, at least until the next time they send a crew into the area (could be a few years).

Here’s where it was on Genesee (California in the background) about 10:15 this morning. All of us gawkers wipped out our smartphones: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orcmid/5962604547/in/photostream

Anyone know how long it takes for new images to be uploaded to Google Maps? The Streetview of my place is from before we bought it (there’s evidence of renovation; plywood on sawhorses outside). But the aerial view clearly shows my cars so it’s more recent.

All the online references I found suggest it takes months.

Saw it yesterday as it passed by Safeway on Roxbury.

    I want that job….

Yay for updated street views. Every time I am looking around where we used to live on gmaps I see our old car parked there and get that weird flash back feeling.

That job would have to rank right up there as one of the most boring jobs in America. Driving for Metro would be a better career choice. Metro pays well and it offers excellent benefits. You just have to be polite to people and not let your bus touch anything.

Google street view is great if your into being nosey. But I find it extremely disturbing and a hugh invasion of privacy. especially if youre the property owner.

Saw that car Tuesday at lunch hour at the Samurai Sam’s in Eastgate

I hope they drove by when my flowerpots were hanging and not on the ground where I left them after watering them (because it was supposed to rain) and I really hope that the weeds don’t look too obvious…

    .
is this how you feel when someone drives or walks past your house?

  • LivesinWS July 22, 2011 (11:46 am)

rob — the proper analogy is the house/property can be stared at electronically 24/7.

Hey if I want to photograph someone’s yard or garden fixture I ask them if it’s OK. Google just swipes it without asking — for a commercial purpose. Guess that’s a different matter because it’s so high-tech and kewl.

I was waiting for someone to post about how it’s an invasion of privacy.

SO tell me, how do you feel about the mind control experiments being conducted by the X-band radar??

It just drove through the parking lot at my office! I ran out and waved. Yay! Now I’ll be on the Google map. They’ll have to blur out my face, but I like giving them something to do because I like Google.

    @ cj
The pic of our old rental was on the day we moved out and there’s all sorts of our stuff on the lawn. Brings back bad memories of how that moved sucked, but I find the whole street view thing very cool.

Thank goodness we just got finished painting the house.

Have you ever looked at the front of your house with google street view. unless you’ve got a 10 ft fence they see EVERYTHING. Whats in your yard, whats in your driveway, and whats in your livingroom if you’ve got the curtains open. its creepy.

  • Paul July 22, 2011 (7:12 pm)

It came by our house in north Bellevue early afternoon today.

Seriously? Think how many times per day you are recorded by smarphones, traffic cams, web cams, security cams, etc etc…. Google maps is probably the least of our worries at this point!!

I am walking in my front yard carrying a bucket of garden clippings…in a black, barely there tank top. I will be glad to have a new photo for Google Street View.

Sorry, comment time is over.
