missmandyMemberI am looking for a small church in the WS area. My husband and I are pregnant with our first child and I am really wanting to find a good church that we can become members of as we start our family… the problem is, my husband will not attend a large church. We went to Mars Hill and he couldn’t stand the size and the “satelite sermon” then I tried to take him to Life Church (i think that is the name) off of 35th and after pulling up on Sunday morning and him seeing the size he would not go in! His sister and brother in-law are active members of a small, hip, coffee shop style church and since he has been there he is set of finding something similar in our area. Any suggestions?

KenParticipantWell here is a sponsor of WSB.
Unless your looking for a wingnut church to reinforce the dominionist heresies or justify intolerance, they should work fine.
New WSB sponsor: Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation
Any mainstream denominations should also be reasonable.
The two you mentioned are offshoots of the Assemblies cell church structure which place overwhelming emphasis on old testament authoritarianism at the expense of the words of Jesus.
Choose your poison.

RizzRazzMemberMy husband and I are also looking for a new church. We are looking for a church diverse in ethnicity and age. We are a young multi-racial couple. What I mean by young is early 30’s and we just started our family with the birth of our son this past January.

hopeyParticipantDefine “small”? I think many WS churches could be considered “small” simply because church attendance in traditional denominations are declining across the board. Don’t let the size of the building fool you; go in and see the size of the crowd. It might not be as big as you think.
That said, given the request for a coffeehouse bent, I’ll offer a church that isn’t in WS but should be very easy to get to on a Sunday morning.
Be sure to check out the “Q Cafe” and live music links. They also put their sermons on the site, so you can get an idea of whether the preaching fits with your values.
(I’m not a member, but my mother works for the denomination that church belongs to. It’s one of the most “modern” churches in their organization.)

datamuseParticipantThere are roughly half a dozen small churches within a mile of my house in Highland Park (one of them’s my polling place). Along SW Holden, 9th Ave SW, and SW Henderson.
Couldn’t really tell you much about them, though, as I’m not a churchgoer. Some of them seem to do a fair bit of community involvement, which I’m inclined to take as a good sign.

WesMemberShorewood Foursquare Church off Roxbury, is a great church, that loves community, and loves Jesus. It’s also connected with a school Shorewood Christian School.

CarolPBMemberNot in WS, But I recommend Bethany UCC, Beacon and Graham. Diverse, with an emphasis on social justice. Multi racial, multi cultural, intergenerational. The pastor, Angela Ying, IS AWESOME!

WSBKeymasterThanks to those who mentioned the WSUU’s. We have another current church sponsor, Fauntleroy Church, which is a UCC congregation, and involved in a lot of activities, events, social-justice work, etc.

KenParticipantJust a note. any church with foursquare in its name is a version of Pentecostal / Assemblies, (holy roller to us old folks) founded by noted con person, faith healer scammer, and early Christian nationalist Aimee Semple McPherson

BonnieParticipantA friend of mine goes to Arbor Heights Community Church. It is a small church and they like it there a lot.

dustinParticipantIf you’re looking for a small church, but with an active and open congregation I’d recommend Peace Lutheran on the corner of 39th and Thistle. While it’s a traditional service, the church itself is really progressive (Just went through the RIC process to affirm it’s welcome of all people regardless of sexual orientation). We’ve also just hired a new youth director and had a bunch of young couples join. Plus, no one does coffee and cookies after a service like Lutherans. :)
Our website is kind of sparce, but for a little church it’s getting better.

hopeyParticipant@dustin: how small is small? I personally prefer a traditional ELCA service. I haven’t found one I like in WS (reading the sermons on First’s website quite franky scared me), but I admit I’ve never visited your church, mostly because I assumed it was *too* small for my liking. :) Currently when I do go to church, I drive out to an ELCA church in Bellevue.
Just curious if you can give me an idea of average Sunday attendance. Generally how many kids, too?
October 29, 2008 at 9:42 pm #645511
dustinParticipant@hopey: I’d say between our congregation varies between 60 and 80 depending on the Sunday. Probably closer to 90 or 95 if you count the kids. We’ve welcomed a few bundles of joy in the last year and a few more are on the way so we’re getting bigger all the time. :)
Here is a link to the sermon this past Sunday:

ellenaterMemberWe’re goin’ Catholic. Check out Our Lady of Guadalupe on 35th. There slogan should be, “New Catholicism. All the Christ without the Guilt”. Father Jack rules and you get a free rosary if you go through RCIA.
