I have done A LOT of research on this category of auto as we are SO dissatisfied with how tight our 2008 Outback wagon is. (We have a dog and hopefully will have two kids sometime soon.) Definitely does not feel like a family car.

So, basically OP, you are right that your choice is between a large SUV (not a smaller crossover, if you don’t want those in-laws really really squished in the back) and a mini van. New, these cars are all going to cost you over 25k, but used you can of course get something closer to your price point. And, they will all have really bad gas mileage (i.e. under 25 in the City)

Here are the best contenders in the SUV category for you. Remember that the 3rd row seat is not always comfy and is only meant to be used occasionally like you say.

Toyota Highlander – Brother has this and LOVES it, great resale value, comes in Hybriid too but expensive for that feature

Hyundai Santa Fe GTS (2012 and newer) – Probably the most economical of this category you will find but since it is a new model, not a lot of used out there

Chevy Traverse – friends have this and LOVE it. it is definitely roomy inside, great family car, terrible gas mileage

Mazda CX9 – I ruled this out simply because it gets like 16 mpg, compared to other above that get closer to 20, but boy is it fun to drive

Ford Explorer – Also a new model, and nicely redesigned. Have not driven yet, but have heard good things about it

Obviously, I am not talking about SUVs in the mammoth category like Ford Expedition, Cadillac Escalade, etc.

When you stack all of these cars up against a used mini-van, it is hard to swallow what you are not getting, in my opinion. I shudder at the thought of being a mini-van mom (yes, I am that vain) but the Toyota Sienna gets 19-21 mpg in the City now, and you get so much more room and comfort. If you are going to be transporting tween friends of your kids anytime soon, I think this is the much safer bet. I have recently found used FWD Siennas in the 20k range that are only a few years old (2010 and up).

For those who asked about development at 3531 and 3541 SW 100th Street in Arbor Heights, the owner has applied with the Seattle Planning Department to short plat the two properties into five lots (dividing 3531 into two parcels, and 3541 into three parcels), and then build houses on the lots.

The documents are online at the Department of Planning and Development. The shortened URL is http://tinyurl.com/lr9chom, then click on the Documents tab to access all the documents.

    • I am fully trained in Child and Infant CPR.

    • I have taken the Children’s Hospital “Better

    Hi, Localman;

Yup, that was the second thing I did (after checking to see that the part was indeed off the unit, rather than the batteries having gone flat). Thanks for for the idea! There are stories of other kids whose parts have come off and ended up in peculiar places (wheel wells of cars, top hinges of doors, shopping carts, the list is pretty impressive!) — but this part does not have the medical-grade magnet like those parts, so it likely succumbed to gravity.

Off to try more with wakeflood’s metal detector!

Yup, Dobro, they were always fundamentally at odds with each other save for the standard “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” gambit. They just served a convenient purpose of their paymasters, as you suggest.

The few Tea Partiers who ACTUALLY believed in a small and inexpensive Fed Gov were eventually going to run headlong into the inconvenient notion that Corporate America gets handouts from and is dependent upon said Fed Gov. Whoops!

    FreeRangeAuthor..

Hubby’s insurance changed this last year…

their previously gold standard has tarnished and increased in cost.

I would blame Obamacare, but increased costs and diminished benefits were a trend long before obamacare was a gleam in some Republican’s eye..

Yup.. republican’s eye. Obamacare was the Republican plan before Obama tried to craft a compromise and signed onto it…

if we had single payer you would be doing your own private little happy dance in the shower instead of singing the blues..

Yup, they will. And I’ve done that too since school started!

I remember reading someplace – maybe it was in a WIRED article? – about how consistent feedback loops are very effective way to change behavior. Which is to say, the “your speed” displays are probably a better way to go if your desire is to reduce speeds through sensitive areas. But then, those don’t produce revenue. :-)

    maplesyrup..

    yup.. there’s the rub.

the stock value of health insurance companies rose right after Obamacare was passed..

this “reform” turned out to be a sweet deal for insurance companies

they can have it both ways.. increase their profits by cutting our benefits and raising rates

and blame Obamacare which they crafted..

there are some good things buried in this legislation

but it definitely wasn’t he reform we needed

I LOVE Greek Gods but the singles are $1.59 and 270 calories per so it’s a rare treat but I especially love the Fig. We have been eating a lot of Muller and it’s really good. I think it’s better than Chobani so I stopped buying it -thank goodness! Sorry about the hives, yuck.

    “Let’s get the Bastards.”

I just had a kitchen fire in my oven from some bacon grease that had dripped down into the oven while making bacon wrapped figs with goat cheese (yum). It didnt go out by just closing the door to the oven so I had to quickly make the decision to use the fire extinguisher to prevent it from spreading or damaging the oven.

Its a fairly large kitchen extinguisher and I only used a single small squirt since the fire was (thankfully) entirely contained in the oven. Im positive there is plenty of chemicals left in it so I figured it would be cool if it didnt go to waste.

So… if you want to teach your kids how to use a fire extinguisher properly please stop by the dog training studio this Wednesday evening between 6 and 9 pm to pick it up. It will be sitting out on the front entrance steps free for you to grab. First come, first serve.

This is from way back in 2003, but still intriguing:

“The Russian authorities have asked Interpol to help trace a tycoon accused of threatening to kill a senior official in a dispute over rights to some of the country’s most lucrative vodka brands.

The businessman, Yuri Shefler, who amassed a fortune exporting Stolichnaya and other labels around the world, denies that he threatened to kill Vladimir Loginov, a former deputy agriculture minister fighting to win back the vodka rights for the government.

Mr Shefler, a multi-millionaire, claims that the allegations are part of a plot to hijack his company. “Mr Shefler has never spoken to Mr Loginov and no one has ever shown any proof of the conversation,” said a company spokesman in Moscow. “This is all part of an illegal attempt by officials to gain control of our business.” Mr Shefler has not been seen in Russia since March last year. A warrant for his arrest has been issued and the manhunt has now moved to Western Europe, where Mr Shefler is said to own several homes.”
