Rainyday, I bought a bred dog. But I spent months searching petfinder.com first for the specific dog that I wanted with no luck. I now have an 11 month old puppy and have said from the beginning that I will also adopt a dog as soon as mine is through puppyhood. I can only handle one new dog or child at a time, my oldest daughter is 10 next is 6 and puppy at 11 months, getting a puppy is pretty much just like having a baby if you are a responsible dog owner and I want to keep my sanity. So while now I only have a bred dog I will have an adopted dog in the future and you wouldnt know that if you just saw me walking down the street with my dog. Im just sayin that you dont know the story or the intentions of all of those who buy bred dogs. So I would hope that you would not just throw me into the category of someone who drives you crazy just because I own a bred dog :)

JenV, yes the tax does include paper bags. I hadnt realized that until a friend pointed it out to me when I said that I will use paper bags instead. I also didnt realize that the fees collected will go to help educate recyling programs…i need to do more reading on it. I for one just think the idea of the tax is a silly concept. but then again that is just my opinion.

    JenV.. that’s a great question.

paper bags aren’t as much of a disposal problem as plastic since they are biodegradable, but they use resources and fossil fuels in both their creation and transportation…

biodegradable is good.. even if they take a huge amount of time to biodegrade … as the biodegradable lawn refuse bags and doggie poo bags do…

i hadn’t thought of the sandwich bags.. and for that i bet waxed paper bags would work every bit as well.. though would be hard to tie shut.. ooh.. just thinking about it makes me pucker.

obviously.. just when i thought i had it all figured out… this requires more though:(

both of my dogs came from other people who couldn’t or wouldn’t care for them… as have my past dogs. Each of our adopted pets have come as the result of human abuse.

and for the most part, i have paid substantial sums to take them on.. and even more substantial sums afterwards to give them the kind of life they deserve.

as JT has said, responsible breeders are not the problem.. none of my pure-breds came from a responsible breeder…

The biggest problem is that irresponsible pet owners drive up demand by paying outrageous amounts of money for pets that they neither have the time or resources to take care of properly.. and then dump those pets on rescue organizations or humane societies…

I agree with JT, our greatest need is for education.

We don’t educate on how to properly raise and train our children..let alone our pets. Both take a substantial investment of time and resources….

There are a lot of ways to make a difference.

Taking those who are most difficult to adopt and giving them the security to live the lives they deserve is the path JT and I and our families have taken.. but it is only one.

    RainyDay1235s volunteer work is another.

Working towards better laws governing the buying and selling of animals is another.

But the one that will ultimately make the most difference is taking the time and effort to be a responsible steward of the pets you choose to include in your family… and sharing that experience with others.

if you do that, there will be less need for volunteers like rainyday1235 in shelters and for people like JT and I to take on the “problem animals”… and less need for more restrictive laws and enforcement.

I only hope that older parents who have children well past the expiration date on their biological clocks have given as much thought to raising healthy children as they have to their need to create biological replicas of themselves.

I have known people with all sizes of dogs who use the grocery bags for poop pickup simply because A) they wanted to reuse them and B) didn’t want to pay for something that will end up all poopy (I can’t believe how many times in this thread I have said poopy, by the way)…I used to bring a bag of bags into work and put them in the common area and people would snatch them up for just that purpose. It sounds like the biodegradable bags are pretty cheap, though, and work better.

This is going to sound like a dumb question, and I admittedly haven’t done my own research, but does this bag tax also apply to paper bags?

RainyDay1235, I do think of that all the time. And have a lifetime of putting it to practice (shelter/rescue adoptions). I understand that demand has to be stopped before the supply will be. Perhaps stigmatizing dog purchasers is one way to go, but I prefer educating, all the way around.

It seems responsible breeders are not the overwhelming cause of over-population. Irresponsible owners who won’t fix their animals are a much bigger culprit. And just as an aside, all of my adoptions have resulted in caring for severely traumatized animals. Not horn tooting, just saying, that it requires a tremendous amount of time and effort that not everyone is able or willing to make.

In the end, I think we can agree that the the goal is to eliminate the existence of unwanted animals. And to that end, I appreciate your passion and willingness to volunteer your time.

I too am all for government staying out of my womb – I just needed to vent my personal frustration at people’s choices within such freedom – not to mention the Dr’s who encourage it!

JT – Regarding animals, that was my mom’s reasoning too – they all need a home. True – but please keep in mind that once you BUY a bred animal, you are encouraging the people to (force)breed their animals again…and again…and again.

Not only does that money keep their ‘business’ alive, that precious spot in your home is one more taken up that could have been given to a needy shelter animal that will likely put down. Just another way to think of it…

Biodegradable dog scoop bags are very common and not that expensive. You can buy in bulk online and the rolls fit very nicely into leash-attachable holders. Again, one little change makes a big difference…

I don’t like Jamba juice enough to put up with bad attitude.. and i had already experienced bad attitude there from management before this tale.

the starbucks in QFC makes smoothies.

i would write the corporate office of Jamba Juice about this manager including the details and her name.

although.. i should note, it’s always more financially productive for you if you write the management before sounding off on a public forum… so you may get nothing more out of it than the satisfaction of knowing that she will be reprimanded.

    As I understand, it does….

The city will collect 15 cents from each plastic and paper bag sale to be used for waste prevention, recycling, city cleanup and environmental education programs. The remaining 5 cents goes to the store to help educate consumers and possibly offer bags to low income individuals.

    JoB-

Good morning, your statement below realy doesn’t detract from what was stated initially, it’s a rather passive statement at best.

“i must admit that since my remarks, the situation there has further deteriorated…”

I too wish this was not happening, and my statements about the left having knee jerk reactions is right on target (although I was really speaking to all the websites I frequented this past week not just this one). I do understand to a certain degree though, it is hard to condemn something that most hard leftist believe in, even if to a degree.

The Russian military deployed several SS-21 missile launchers and supplied vehicles to South Ossetia on Friday.

    Hello Europe?

Can you hear those chains rattling? Unfortunately Europe is chained by Russian gas and oil. It’s toothless again, what do you think that means down the road here over the next few years for the US?

You remember the joke… France is always there, when they need us. If you think that if Russia doesn’t back down and probably won’t due to passive support or lack of accountability by NATO the UN and the EU as a whole, this will most definitely turn into an issue that the US will have to address

Anyone else seeing parallels between this and Israel/Palestine?

And JoB – I make it a point to always have a nice day but thanks for your well wishes nonethless, that was sweet :)

Oak Floors of GreenBank. Like PDieter said, and more.

Also, make sure the sub-floor is properly prepped.

I tore out carpet, dusty red pad, particle board sub-floor

and the squeeky plywood underlayment to the stringers.

Saber construction levelled (shaved) them flat and installed

    1 1/8″ T & G (tongue and groove) a.k.a. “Car Deck”.

This floor will NEVER flex, and outlast my life.

I see it as the investment I get to enjoy the rest of my life.

Buy cheap, buy twice—and I don’t have THAT kind of money.

If you are not that serious about it, go anywhere. I suggest staying away from ‘manufactured products’ (i.e. not real wood).

However, if the budget concern trumps results, then make sure you won’t be sorry seeing the stuff later. There is a place with orange awnings on 1st north of Spokane, on the east side.

Their sales force is primed to inspire 20-30 year olds on their first project.

I hear Life Center offers transportation to either all or most schools, too – I’m not sure the Y and others offer this to all schools so you’ll want to make sure you ask when you call around. They generally only offer it to select schools.

My question would be whether that’s really a historic high of any sort. Depending on the boundaries from which that 700-ish number was drawn – that could be about 2% of the homes around here? I don’t see any more “for sale” signs in my neighborhood than has been the case for the 15 years we’ve lived here. I also would have to wonder if a disproportionate number of them MIGHT be the newer townhouse-type units, since so many of them have been built in recent years? You mention the number didn’t include condos, but townhouses aren’t condos.

Hey, on a side note, please make a URL that long into a “tiny url” at tinyurl.com or is.gd or one of those, before posting in the forums – it runs off the page, as you see above.

    thanks, TR

TR…you are so right about the age thing. I had my daughter at age 33, although I started trying years before ( another story)…I’m 61 (41 inside),, she’s 27….and we have a great relationship, time, etc. I was no where ready when I was in my early 20’s. And now I can live vicariously through my daughter’s children, when and if she has one (some?) of her own, thank-you very much. If I had a child now, I’d be 75 when he/she is 14…argghhhh! I’d probably forget that I had one – lol..

First off, Rowdy Gaines is a terrible swimming commentator and is another reason to watch Canadian coverage. NBC could do way better, but keeps bringing him back for some stupid reason. Second, getting water in your goggles is incredibly annoying. It makes it very difficult to see the wall or your competition…it’s bad enough to have that happen in workout when you have time to stop at the wall to fix it so I can see why Phelps was not looking happy after his 200 butterfly. Glad to see it didn’t negatively affect his performance though. I’d also like to point out that swimming is a year-round sport, not just a big meet every four years. Maybe NBC will start giving it a little more coverage in the future…yeah right.

I’m expecting to live to at least 95. Given that, I could theoretically have a child at 70 and plan on seeing it to adulthood. (Although how in the world can you ever count on anything? You can have a kid at 22 and get hit by a truck at 22 1/2 and then that child is just as motherless as the child of a 70-year-old who dies at 71.)

I was 36 when our son was born and I can’t imagine having had him any earlier … sometimes I think I was *still* too young, as I’m not sure that 12 years later I possess the real wisdom to raise a tween/teen and maybe I never will, too late now.

As a wise friend of mine said way back in college, “Age is but a number.” – TR

    JanS..

i am glad i don’t have that choice.. having somehow misplaced the equipment some time ago;~)

i can’t imagine what possesses women that age to give birth… but grandmothers and great grandmothers often raise children… so i suppose she may as well be raising her own…

there is a huge surrogate business in india.. somehow i think if i was going to cook a baby with hubby’s sperm and someone else’s eggs (not likely to be her own).. i would cook it in a human incubator…

    but heck… who knows.

However, one thing i do know is that starting out life at 2 pounds isn’t the best start…

I had. And I am familiar with a lot of boring details.

The Poland situation is another wholly manufactured cowboy diplomacy issue.

NATO vs Warsaw Pact moves on the part of the US have been designed entirely as full employment acts for conservatives who have invested their entire career into using anti communism as the Bogey man to control the sheep and as a sales force for missile manufacturers.

The similarities in Georgia are indeed closer to Kosavo than Iraq especially now since the US ignored ethnic cleansing is nearly complete in Iraq.

The two territories have not been governed directly by Georgias government in Tbilisi since the friggin 90’s and South Ossetia has a large number of ethnic Russians and other minorities who have long had Russian passports.

No matter how many neocons try to make this into a “russian aggression” meme, the truth is the Georgian army, trained, equipped and clothed (US army surplus) tried to take total control of a breakaway region Russia had agreed to protect from Georgia and had troops nearby to back up the “peacekeepers” it had installed years ago.

Once again, borders drawn by superpowers across ethnic regions become contentious. This has many many historic parallels and does not fit exactly into any previous mold at the moment.

It could have gone the way of the results of Austro-Hungarian empire breakup, or the breakup of any or the colonies of the European powers of the 18th or 19th centuries.

A US administration who understood diplomacy would not have allowed either of these situations (or hundreds of similar situations) get to the point where troops are used.

We have to assume the State Department and its parts have been just a debased and crony infested as the Justice Department and the Defense Department.

I totally believe that this was these families choices. And, yes, we cannot allow the “state” to make choices for us, whether here or in another country. I can still look at this and shake my head. Being able to give birth has not a thing to do with being a good, effective parent, whether here, or in India, or in Egypt. I’m 61….would I elect to have a child 9 years from now for , gee, I dunno, a somewhat selfish reason to satisfy some need inside me? I’m glad that I have the choice, but…are we nuts here? ;-)
