BENEFIT HAIRCUTS: Starting at 9 am, proceeds from haircuts done today at Christopher’s Salon in Morgan Junction (7009 California SW) will go toward helping the owner with medical bills from a recent health crisis. Tickets also are being sold for a benefit raffle; the drawing is now set for September 7. LAST DAY BEFORE LIBRARY SHUTDOWN: After today, Seattle Public Library branches are closed for a week because of city budget cuts, followed by the Labor Day holiday, so if you need to get something done, today’s your last chance till Tuesday, Sept. 8th. Busy night around West Seattle – we made it to four events, and here are photos from one of them – the North Delridge Neighborhood Council‘s ice-cream social at Cottage Grove Park. Holli Margell provided the photo above – that’s Lisa Keith, who organized the event, painting Cooper Margell‘s face, while dad Casey Margell helps him hold still. Lisa notes, “The weather was perfect for ice cream, angel food cake, peach crisp, and blackberries picked along Longfellow Creek. We welcomed neighbors who moved to Delridge just this summer, to the lovely Gerthrie, who has graced North Delridge for over 40 years. … It was lovely to have a chance to relax, talk, and enjoy each other’s company.” Now, another photo from Holli – the “bubble bucket” was a hit with the younger attendees:

FREE HEAD SHOTS: We brought you first word two weeks ago of West Seattle photographer Rasmus Rasmussen‘s idea to help local jobseekers, and it’s since gotten attention from a couple of citywide media outlets, so it might be a hot ticket: 11 am tomorrow (Tuesday), first-come first-served, free head shots for jobseekers, C and P Coffee (5612 California SW; map). FREE CONCERT: It’s been almost a month since we got the news that West Seattle Christian Church would play host to the African Children’s Choir for a free concert (donations accepted) – and now it’s almost here – Tuesday, 7 pm, in the WSCC activity center (east side of 42nd, south of Genesee; map). Kathy also reports that “the West Seattle Junction Association booth at California/Alaska, hay bales and all, was the scene of spontaneous squirt gun battles between volunteer Meghan Sykas and nearly anyone who could do with some cooling off. Little Anna Morris, 3, was more than willing to accept the challenge, dousing not only Sykas, but some who were standing too close.”

That’s the Brian Waite Band – in the middle of their “20,000 Volts Under the Sea” tour and plugging into the Admiral Neighborhood Association‘s Summer Concerts at Hiawatha series tonight. 6:30 pm, east lawn of Hiawatha Community Center (map), free admission, bring your own chairs/blankets/picnic dinner. And if you’re bringing kids – there’s face-painting tonight, too! Weather looks promising, unlike last week. (This is the second-to-last concert of the first-ever series, which concludes next week with the fabulous West Seattle Big Band.)

It’s the hottest ticket in West Seattle this weekend – The Nature Consortium is getting ready for its annual Arts-in-Nature Festival this Saturday and Sunday at Camp Long, and joined WSB as a sponsor this week to help get the word out. The arts at the festival span multiple disciplines, from visual to audio, from performance to participation, and the artists include musicians like now-West Seattleite Chris Ballew (from Presidents of the United States of America) performing as Caspar Babypants – here’s our video of CB at West Seattle Summer Fest last month:
He’s scheduled to perform in the Geodesic Sound Dome (one of five venues) at 2 pm Sunday; festival hours are 11 am-9 pm Saturday, 11 am-6 pm Sunday. The ballot dropoff box outside White Center Library (11220 16th SW; map) and its counterpart at North Delridge Neighborhood Service Center (5405 Delridge; map) are the two closest places to take your ballot up until 8 pm tonight (or get it in the mail, but be sure it’s postmarked today). County Council District 8, which includes West Seattle, is still the district with the highest percentage of returned ballots – but 80 percent are STILL out there, so that’s a whole lot of voting yet to happen. We’ll bring you election results once the vote-counting begins.

Then tonight at 8 down the block at Easy Street Records, local bands Bend and Stevedore perform, with the $7 cover charge (21+ only) plus beer sales (donated by West 5 and Georgetown Brewery) going to Team Tracy. Supporting the community is the work of many of the non-police-affiliated organizations represented this afternoon, including Southwest Youth and Family Services, whose director Steve Daschle staffed their booth:
SWYFS is this area’s lead agency for the city’s new Youth Violence Prevention Initiative; Daschle tells us they’re about to hire one more case manager for the program. SWYFS also is looking forward to its September 18th fundraising dinner/auction at Salty’s, Fia! Fia! Daschle explains that while his organization’s funding is only about 20 percent from the private sector, “unrestricted” money like that from fundraisers is vital – for example, they have an Iraqi Home Visit Program that is supposed to run 2 years for maximum impact, but it lost one year of funding, so money like this has to be used to keep it going. Tickets are available online. Also looking ahead to a fall fundraiser, the White Center Food Bank, whose Audrey Zemke was at Picnic at the Precinct:
She says invites for WCFB’s Fall Harvest Dinner and Auction will go out in about two weeks; it’ll be October 17th at South Seattle Community College‘s Brockey Center, with media personality Cindi Rinehart as auctioneer and North Highline Fire Chief Scott LaVielle as emcee. West Seattle Food Bank was represented today as well – its board president Pete Spalding chairs the Southwest Precinct Citizens Advisory Council – he stopped to pose with fellow food bank board member Shannon Braddock:
Spalding also had a bit of politics news: In October, the Delridge Neighborhoods District Council and Southwest District Council plan to co-sponsor a West Seattle-specific campaign forum – time/date/location TBA. Both groups have been visited by multiple candidates during the primary season that ends with Tuesday’s election, but the really big forums have happened in front of the 34th District Democrats, represented this afternoon as well:
Though it’s too late to register to vote in the primary, there’s plenty of time to get signed up for the general, and that’s what the 34th Dems’ reps were doing, as well as encouraging people who are registered to get Tuesday’s ballot turned in ASAP. And you won’t be surprised to hear some candidates showed up today, including City Council President Richard Conlin:
Conlin is seen there, talking with Morgan Community Association‘s Cindi Barker, who was promoting emergency-preparedness education today (check this website for info every West Seattleite can use). His race vs. West Seattleite David Ginsberg is actually not on Tuesday’s ballot since, if there’s only two, they advance directly to the general. Other candidates seen at the picnic during and before our visit included Mayor Nickels, mayoral challenger Joe Mallahan and city attorney Tom Carr. Many other groups and causes – more than 20 in all – joined in today’s picnic, including the Southwest Seattle Business and Professional Women:

Picnic at the Precinct is an event held at all the Seattle Police Department‘s precincts each year, presented by the Seattle Police Foundation.
That’s one of many fan-created tributes you can find on YouTube in appreciation of Johnny Depp‘s three star turns as Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. Tonight in the courtyard next to Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor; 4410 California SW), you can see the movie that started the frenzy, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.” Gates for this West Seattle Junction Outdoor Movies on the Wall presentation open at 7, and we’ve seen some wall-to-wall crowds, so you are advised to stake out your spot early. Since it’s getting darker earlier here in late summer, the preshow zaniness — described by Hotwire’s Lora Lewis as “‘swabbing the deck,’ where people race across the ground ‘curling’ a Frisbee with a broom” — may start earlier than the usual advertised time of 8:30 pm; the movie’s at dusk. While the series itself has a long list of sponsors, including WSB, each movie has screening-specific sponsors who are on hand to meet, greet and often offer treats, and tonight they include one of our newer sponsors, Endolyne Joe’s, selling barbecue sandwiches, as well as Liberty Bell Printing and Snap Fitness. The rain’s back – and thunder too – but tonight’s two big events are still on, and we wanted to remind you that BOTH are now indoors: West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm, with locations all over the peninsula (here’s the printable map) — including the Nature Consortium‘s art exhibit at Youngstown Arts Center, 4408 Delridge (map) – NC’s Lisa Corbin sent the photo at right and says, “This painting titled MLK was done by one of our teaching artists, Agazit Ocbazgi. Her other pieces are equally as compelling. We will have live music and refreshments tonight as well!” Also happening shortly: Admiral Neighborhood Association‘s Summer Concerts at Hiawatha, now set to take place inside the gym at 6:30 pm, starring the Elizabeth Carpenter Trio – free!
