West Seattle Art Walk: Next lineup’s out, as growth continues

artwalk.jpgJust five nights till the April edition of the West Seattle Second Thursday Art Walk, and the full lineup’s out. (See it here.) Every Art Walk for the past few months has made history with something new — a first-ever feature, biggest-ever participant list, etc. — and this one’s no exception: This time, the Art Walk continues to grow beyond The Junction — with five Admiral participants this time! — and the listings on the official flyer/map now geographically group the venues. More on its growth, plus a closer look at a non-business Art Walk regular, ahead:

This started, you may recall, as the West Seattle Junction Art Walk, revived in November 2006. Sort of small, informal, grass-roots. Now, with more than 20 participants every time, and venues beyond The Junction, the promotional plan is growing along with the Art Walk itself.

According to Lora Lewis from Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor), organizers will ask venues to commit for three months at a time, in part to facilitate the production of higher-quality promotional postcards and maps. Starting with this month’s map (here’s another look), the map will list participating venues and their addresses and websites, but not the specific artists — those will be listed on the Art Walk blog before Art Walk night. Participants also will get new “Art Walk Here” signs to display during the event.

Some venues already are in it for the long haul, like this month’s sole non-business participant, the Ginomai arts center at 42nd and Genesee. This building, formerly home to the West Seattle Christian Church (WSB sponsor) school, not only houses artists’ studios but also a community room that is used during the Art Walk and for myriad other uses, as Dan Jacobs explains in this WSB clip:

(The Community Room calendar is online here.) When you drop by Ginomai during the Art Walk (they also have free parking in the lot on the south side of the building; the driveway is on the west side of 42nd just south of Genesee), you will usually find several artists showing (and often offering items for sale) in the Community Room, as well as some of the artists on hand in their studios.

One of the newer participants where you’ll also find a lot going on is Twilight Artist Collective, which expanded into The Junction (immediately west of Easy Street) just a few months ago; that’s where Junction boutiques joined forces for this fashion show staged during last month’s Art Walk (we have two clips in our original coverage; here’s one):

This Thursday, Twilight is promising another live event during the Art Walk, with Mat Winkelman and Johna Grey, whose performance is described in this excerpt from Twilight’s e-mail announcement:

Because cute couples are a dime a dozen, but hyper-talented super couples are one in a million. This amazing duo can sing, dance, tell jokes and paint. Don’t miss Mat and Johna making spectacles of themselves for one night only, a couple of intrepid, gypsy-transplant, social workers from Denver CO. These two spend their days working in food banks, resettling refugees, and self-righteously bitching about the state of the union. By night they displace energy that would otherwise be spent plotting political assassinations by painting pictures instead. Come see original paintings inspired by each other and dead birds, ah how sweet. Mat will play some loopy, ambient, dreampop, sleeprock stuff and Johna will wear a “funny” hat.

Get out to the Art Walk Thursday night 6-9 pm, in The Junction and Admiral; if you miss the Twilight show, you can count on us for video highlights before Thursday night is out. (Our archived Art Walk coverage can be found here.)

That website is soon to be defunct when ohnoyesyesattagirl.com goes live with my real work.
I haven’t had the opportunity to be in a group of working artists since I moved to Seattle due to the onslaught of about 13 years of nonstop life and death encounters and the remaing time spent unconcious in various comas. So now that I am doing a bit better I am anxious to jump in and get dirty again! Do you hold any life drwing groups? Any place in west seattle just offering drop in work time with other artists? for how much? or classes for fun and to get my feet wet again? Please feel free to call or email me. Thank you so much, Kali

Sorry, comment time is over.
