The autumnal equinox isn’t till a week from Monday, so you actually have two more summer weekends left, counting this one (and the weather sure looks semi-summery) – events include the first weekend of “The Vertical Hour” at ArtsWest (photo above by Matthew Durham), the Barbecue Championships at Alki, the huge West Seattle Gateway Cleanup, and a whole lot more – 47 West Seattle events for tonight through Sunday night, listed ahead:

FRIDAY & SATURDAY: 5×5 art exhibit @ ArtsWest, noon-7 pm both days

FRIDAY NIGHT: Live music at C and P Coffee with Tom Andersen, 6-8 pm

FRIDAY NIGHT: 6:30 – 8:30pm, Family Night; swim and play in the gym as a family. Free for members, non-members bring two cans of food for West Seattle Food Bank. At West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor); call 935-6000 for information

FRIDAY NIGHT: All teens in middle school and high school are invited to a “Back to School Dance” from 8–11 pm. Sponsored by the West Seattle Rainbow Girls and Des Moines DeMolay. To be held at the Alki Masonic Hall – 4736 40th Ave. SW. Tickets available at the door: $5.00 or $3.00 with two cans of food (food items will be donated to the W. SATURDAY MORNING-AFTERNOON: West Seattle Gateway Cleanup: Volunteer cleanup of area from 35th/Fauntleroy to “Walking on Logs,” 9 am-3:30 pm (questions? e-mail ndriver@quidnunc.net) – remember, the outside lane of the westbound Fauntleroy end of The Bridge will be closed to keep the volunteers safe

SATURDAY MORNING: Camp Long presents Fauntleroy Forest Walk, activity for ages 8 and up: From the Reach to the Beach, we’ll explore Fauntleroy’s 28 acre watershed! We have permission to explore the most recently restored segment of the creek: the mouth and beach on private property. We will include a plant list. Learn native plants you can incorporate into your landscape. Please register by 9/12. (Note: Customers who do not want to walk to the beach can meet us at the ferry terminal. Activity Fee $8), 9 am

SATURDAY AFTERNOON: 4th annual Halibut Barbecue at Village Green Perennial Nursery (WSB sponsor), which describes the event this way: “Join us for fresh Halibut sandwiches from the 2008 Alaska fishing trip. This is the 4th annual BBQ, & we will be celebrating our 5th year here at the nursery! YES- we have been here for 5 years! $5.o0 for beans, bun, beverage and the band. We will have Halibut for sale for $14.00 lb. It will be frozen in 1lb. packages. We are happy to have live music from The ‘Atlas String Band’ Old time mountain music with lyrics about heartbreak, liquor, God, guns, and some songs with no words at all, so you can just kick up your heels and dance.
