South Alki power outage

911 callers from Beach Drive just reported “a loud explosion, and then the power went out” – and indeed, the Seattle City Light outage map shows 262 customers out of power in South Alki, as of 9:48 am. No word yet on the exact cause but the “explosion” generally suggests an equipment problem – atop a pole, for example.

BIZNOTE: Dave’s Hot Chicken and Gong Cha weeks away from Alaska Junction opening

By Anne Higuera
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

Two new food establishments are poised to open on California Avenue in the first half of November, bringing new food and drink options and late evening operating hours to a block where restaurant food options are limited after 10 pm.

As we first reported a year ago when they signed the lease, franchises Dave’s Hot Chicken and Gong Cha will be moving into the former Haymaker space at 4706 California Ave SW, which is being divided into two separate storefronts. Now the franchisees are ready to talk about the grand openings for each business, along with employment opportunities. Both franchises are owned by the Keshap Group out of Kirkland and sisters from that family business are heading up the franchise development in Washington state. Prachi has Gong Cha, while Sana is opening the Dave’s Hot Chicken stores.

Dave’s Hot Chicken

“The West Seattle permit took a little longer than expected,” says Sana Keshap. In the intervening months, Keshap has opened several Dave’s from Redmond to Tacoma, including one in Issaquah just last week, with Kent and Lynnwood locations slated for December. “I love this brand very much and I want to give it my all. When we’re opening back-to-back like this, it’s tough. I’m getting support pulled in to make sure these openings go smoothly.”

Keshap says the grand opening will be no later than November 13th, though there’s a possibility they will be able to move it up to the first Friday of the month, depending on how construction wraps up. A soft opening will happen the day before. She says they’re expecting a significant crowd in the early days based on the Keshaps’ Capitol Hill location (also a Dave’s/Gong Cha combo), which had more than 2,000 customers during their openings days. While they will eventually be on delivery apps, they will wait until the volume of customers is manageable. “We want to make sure we take care of everyone who shows up in person.”

Dave’s Hot Chicken offers a variety of fried chicken, in 7 levels of spiciness, along with fried mozzarella, fried cauliflower, mac & cheese, shakes, Slushers and other drinks. Keshap says along with serving the community, they actively look to support it with things like fundraisers that donate a portion of sales on a given day. “We have fundraising programs at all our stores. We have a website where groups like sports teams can apply on line and request a date.”

Assistant managers are already being hired for the West Seattle store, and additional positions are being advertised on Indeed. Keshap says the next round of hiring will be for the rest of the store staff, with training ahead of the grand opening. Open hours will be 10am-11pm Sunday-Thursday and 10am-12am Friday and Saturday.

Gong Cha

The bubble tea purveyor, a Taiwanese brand with 2000+ stores worldwide, has just one store so far in Washington. West Seattle’s store will be the second, so Prachi Keshap is bringing the general manager of their Capitol Hill store to help with the grand opening here. She says they only have immediate plans for two more locations, in the region: Tacoma and Portland.

Prachi says Gong Cha encourages an extended soft opening, so they will do that starting November 12th or 13th, with a grand opening on December 3rd and 4th. She says the Gong Cha grand openings often have activities like face painting or performances—details still be worked out. But she says there will be “buy-one-get-one” specials on select drinks during the grand opening.

Gong Cha’s offerings include traditional tea and boba drinks, plus rotating seasonal specials. A recently released horchata-based drink has been so popular at the Capitol Hill location that they expected to run out of supplies for it before the end of the weekend. Prachi says Gong Cha is much more than a typical bubble tea shop because of its reach and international connections. K-Pop star Felix is their global brand ambassador and the stores feature special merchandise like plushies that fans often line up ahead for hours to buy. She also says a limited number of stores, including the new West Seattle one, will have a Super Wu machine. “It’s named after the founder [Wu Zhenhua], but it’s a machine that basically helps us to accurately measure out the drinks.” She says orders generate a QR code, which the Super Wu reads and then dispenses ingredients, making for a consistent product.

Fliers are already up at the Capitol Hill shop advertising open positions in West Seattle, “Then we’re going to be putting up window clings at our West Seattle location. So we’ve started getting resumes in and we’re starting to look.”

Keshap says the Capitol Hill shop has its busiest hours starting around 9-10 pm and into the early morning hours. She knows West Seattle customers may be on a different schedule, which means the hours may change over time. “So we’ll match Dave’s hours and kind of see where we land. Maybe open an hour later [or] close 2 hours earlier.” With separate entries, the stores can complement each other without being tied to the same hours. Gong Cha will also be on the ordering apps.

ELECTION 2026: ‘Vote early’ was the advice. We’re #1!

(WSB photo – Morgan Junction ballot drop box)

Two more weeks to vote – the deadline is Tuesday, November 3. This year’s advice from election officials and advocates has been “vote early” – but so far, most haven’t done that. As of tonight, King County Elections reports receiving ballots from 75,189 of the county’s 1,450,207 registered voters. But when you break it down further, by various jurisdictions, the City Council district that includes West Seattle, District 1, has the highest percentage of ballot returns of any City Council district so far – 6.94%.

The West Seattle Junction ballot drop box – one of four in WS – is the second-most popular one citywide:

If you haven’t voted yet, you can preview who and what’s on your ballot by going here and following the “current election” tab. Ballots in West Seattle include 4 county races, 2 unopposed; 3 state-legislator races, 2 unopposed; U.S. House, WA District 7; 5 State Supreme Court justice races; 2 Appeals Court judge races, both unopposed; 5 District Court judge races, 4 unopposed; 7 Municipal Court judge races, 6 unopposed; 1 city ballot measure; 3 state ballot initiatives.

WEST SEATTLE HALLOWEEN: ‘WyLights’ 2026

Near the 40th/Charlestown water standpipe, you’ll again find Wyatt‘s Halloween display – one he says is extra-special:

This year’s display is especially meaningful to me. It represents years of hard work building confidence and resilience. After years of setbacks in the experiential design job market, I was suggested part-time event security. A year and a half in, I’ve gotten to experience places I used to question my worthiness of. One of those is working on the field for Seahawks games, watching defining plays happen right before my eyes, followed by the roar of Lumen Field. I wanted to give my neighborhood the closest I could to that environment.

My reaper represents my challenges and everything I still face (he’s nice, just acting!), while my energetic tombstone symbolizes me and my comeback through reflection, personal grown and accountability. You’ll also hear some Seahawks nostalgia along with the song I hear after every touchdown!

Got – or seen – another special Halloween display, one we haven’t shown yet (scroll through archives here)? westseattleblog@gmail.com or text 206-293-6302 – thank you!

CAN YOU HELP? Junction attack survivor dealing with ‘very high’ medical bills

More than three weeks after a West Seattle woman was attacked, beaten, and robbed in The Junction, police have yet to announce any progress in the case. But whether or not her attackers are brought to justice, the attack survivor is dealing with the aftermath of her injuries and what a friend describes as “very high” medical bills. Since the attack first came to light, people have been asking how they can help, and we finally have an answer: A crowdfunding campaign has been just set up for her. You can go here to donate. With violent attackers still out there, she has asked to remain unidentified, but friends say she’s tough and fighting to move forward. (And if you have any information about the unsolved crime, 206-233-5000 is the SPD violent-crime tip line; the case # is 26-285630.)

FOLLOWUP: City plans to sweep Longfellow Creek encampment that school warned families about

A week and a half after Chief Sealth International High School warned families about the “growing encampment” along nearby Longfellow Creek, it’s scheduled to be swept this week. After a reader commented that something would be happening October 23 – this Friday – we went looking for the posted notices that precede a sweep, and found the one below, posted at the 24th SW trailhead (to the left of the hydrant) in our photo above:

The warning sent to CSIHS families on October 9 suggested they use ind It Fix It to complain about the encampment.

FOLLOWUP: More SDOT work on Wildwood Place

If you saw the cones and crews on SW Wildwood Place this morning, no, they’re not installing the protected bicycle lane yet – but this work is related. WSB contributor Anne Higuera stopped to ask. With rechannelization coming because of the bike lane/safety changes, she learned, they needed to find out how buses would navigate.

In particular, they wanted to find out what might happen if two buses had to pass. For one bus that went by while Anne was there, it was close.

Mayor Wilson signed a safety order in August including the mandate for the bike lane here – on the street where bicycist Maridee Bonadea was killed – by year’s end, and the SDOT crew said they’re still on that timeline.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Green Ford Ranger stolen by thieves in blue Ford Mustang

Jack hopes you’ll be on the lookout for his stolen pickup truck:

My vehicle was stolen near the Junction on 42nd street at 8:30 last night. The vehicle is a 1997 Ford Ranger. Green but sometimes looks blue in certain light. License plate is D76145K. It’s a splash-variant so it has those wheel wells on the side. And when stolen had a soft cover on the bed. A neighbor saw it speed out of the apartment complex at 8:30 last night, Sunday, October 18th, but they were masked so no identification on the person. The thieves came in a blue Ford Mustang convertible with a soft top, a spoiler, and white stripes on the spoiler, and license plate ADY8896.

A police report has been filed, 26-311801. If someone has information or find it, I would appreciate if people would contact the Seattle police to report it.

Please do that via 911.

UPDATE: Pickup-truck fire on Beach Drive

9:55 AM: Thanks to Ted for the photo. The pickup truck in the photo had a fire on Beach Drive SW near Atlas Place about the same time as the larger SFD incident on SW Michigan, in the 8 am vicinity. Ted happened by while SFD was in cleanup mode and reports the damage appeared to be in the engine-compartment area. We’re following up with SFD.

2:23 PM: We received this summary from SFD spokesperson Kaila Lafferty: “At 7:42 a.m., dispatch received several calls reporting a car fire, with smoke and flames visible, in the 6300 block of Beach Dr. SW. Engine 32 responded and confirmed a working fire in a pickup truck. The fire was extinguished, and the crew remained on scene to monitor until 8:41 a.m. No cause has been identified. No injuries reported.”
