COUNTDOWN: Five days to West Seattle Harvest Festival. Jump into Rain City Ropeworks’ fundraiser!

(Rain City Ropeworks photo from last summer’s National Championships)

This Sunday is your next chance for a big dose of fall fun – the West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival, 11 am-2 pm on Sunday. One of the groups that’ll perform at the Walk-All-Ways intersection is Rain City Ropeworks – here’s how you can jump into their concurrent fundraiser:

Rain City Ropeworks, a youth jump-rope team, is holding its first fundraiser of the year with a sponsor drive.

The campaign culminates at the Harvest Festival on October 25. Sponsors will be displayed at the team’s booth, and Gold-Level Sponsors will be announced during a performance in the Walk-All-Ways intersection. This is a great opportunity for local businesses and the public to show support!

The team’s booster club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Funds help athletes who need financial assistance participate and support programs that build creativity, confidence, belonging, and lifelong fitness.

To donate, visit the team’s sponsorship page, which has the donation form and nonprofit details. Donations can also be sent by Venmo to @rain-city-ropeworks, or supporters can email fundraising@raincityropeworks.org to arrange another payment method.

WEST SEATTLE HALLOWEEN: ‘WyLights’ 2026

Near the 40th/Charlestown water standpipe, you’ll again find Wyatt‘s Halloween display – one he says is extra-special:

This year’s display is especially meaningful to me. It represents years of hard work building confidence and resilience. After years of setbacks in the experiential design job market, I was suggested part-time event security. A year and a half in, I’ve gotten to experience places I used to question my worthiness of. One of those is working on the field for Seahawks games, watching defining plays happen right before my eyes, followed by the roar of Lumen Field. I wanted to give my neighborhood the closest I could to that environment.

My reaper represents my challenges and everything I still face (he’s nice, just acting!), while my energetic tombstone symbolizes me and my comeback through reflection, personal grown and accountability. You’ll also hear some Seahawks nostalgia along with the song I hear after every touchdown!

Got – or seen – another special Halloween display, one we haven’t shown yet (scroll through archives here)? westseattleblog@gmail.com or text 206-293-6302 – thank you!

BIZNOTE: Seaside Grill closed

Seaside Grill opened a little over a year ago in the space where Locust Cider had also closed months earlier. The owner was a co-proprietor of Pegasus Pizza when it was in the Alki space from which it was evicted in 2022 (the restaurant now in The Junction is under different ownership).

CAN YOU HELP? Junction attack survivor dealing with ‘very high’ medical bills

More than three weeks after a West Seattle woman was attacked, beaten, and robbed in The Junction, police have yet to announce any progress in the case. But whether or not her attackers are brought to justice, the attack survivor is dealing with the aftermath of her injuries and what a friend describes as “very high” medical bills. Since the attack first came to light, people have been asking how they can help, and we finally have an answer: A crowdfunding campaign has been just set up for her. You can go here to donate. With violent attackers still out there, she has asked to remain unidentified, but friends say she’s tough and fighting to move forward. (And if you have any information about the unsolved crime, 206-233-5000 is the SPD violent-crime tip line; the case # is 26-285630.)

FOLLOWUP: City plans to sweep Longfellow Creek encampment that school warned families about

A week and a half after Chief Sealth International High School warned families about the “growing encampment” along nearby Longfellow Creek, it’s scheduled to be swept this week. After a reader commented that something would be happening October 23 – this Friday – we went looking for the posted notices that precede a sweep, and found the one below, posted at the 24th SW trailhead (to the left of the hydrant) in our photo above:

The warning sent to CSIHS families on October 9 suggested they use ind It Fix It to complain about the encampment.

FOLLOWUP: More SDOT work on Wildwood Place

If you saw the cones and crews on SW Wildwood Place this morning, no, they’re not installing the protected bicycle lane yet – but this work is related. WSB contributor Anne Higuera stopped to ask. With rechannelization coming because of the bike lane/safety changes, she learned, they needed to find out how buses would navigate.

In particular, they wanted to find out what might happen if two buses had to pass. For one bus that went by while Anne was there, it was close.

Mayor Wilson signed a safety order in August including the mandate for the bike lane here – on the street where bicycist Maridee Bonadea was killed – by year’s end, and the SDOT crew said they’re still on that timeline.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Green Ford Ranger stolen by thieves in blue Ford Mustang

Jack hopes you’ll be on the lookout for his stolen pickup truck:

My vehicle was stolen near the Junction on 42nd street at 8:30 last night. The vehicle is a 1997 Ford Ranger. Green but sometimes looks blue in certain light. License plate is D76145K. It’s a splash-variant so it has those wheel wells on the side. And when stolen had a soft cover on the bed. A neighbor saw it speed out of the apartment complex at 8:30 last night, Sunday, October 18th, but they were masked so no identification on the person. The thieves came in a blue Ford Mustang convertible with a soft top, a spoiler, and white stripes on the spoiler, and license plate ADY8896.

A police report has been filed, 26-311801. If someone has information or find it, I would appreciate if people would contact the Seattle police to report it.

Please do that via 911.

UPDATE: Pickup-truck fire on Beach Drive

9:55 AM: Thanks to Ted for the photo. The pickup truck in the photo had a fire on Beach Drive SW near Atlas Place about the same time as the larger SFD incident on SW Michigan, in the 8 am vicinity. Ted happened by while SFD was in cleanup mode and reports the damage appeared to be in the engine-compartment area. We’re following up with SFD.

Engine 32 responded and confirmed a working fire in a pickup truck. The fire was extinguished, and the crew remained on scene to monitor until 8:41 a.m. No cause has been identified. No injuries reported.”

UPDATE: Building fire in southeast West Seattle

7:55 AM: Seattle Fire has a big response on scene at a commercial building at 200 206 SW Michigan, a short distance east of the bottom of Highland Park Way hill. Updates to come. SFD says the fire’s on the second floor and “the incident is stable.”

8:02 AM: Here’s where this is. SFD says the fire is “in the duct system in the ceiling” and is under control.

8:21 AM: SFD says the fire is out and they’re working on ventilation, as well as investigation.

8:50 AM: No injuries reported; most units have been dismissed.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Suspected burglar found in bed

11:56 PM: A report summary released late tonight by Seattle Police details a burglary arrest southwest of Morgan Junction this afternoon. 911 first got the call around 2 pm about a man trying to enter a residence in the 7000 block of Fauntleroy Way SW. Somebody was home; the man couldn’t get in. Police say he “wandered further down the street” and got into an empty home by kicking the back door in. There, they say, he ate food he found in the kitchen and then went into a bedroom, where officers say they “located the suspect in the bed, under covers.” They arrested him and booked him into jail. We’ll check on his status in the morning.

ADDED 4:49 PM MONDAY: The 41-year-old suspect appeared in court this afternoon; prosecutors requested $50,000 bail and a judge set it at $25,000.
‘

WEEK AHEAD: Morgan Community Association gathering brings another chance to see local candidates

As we’ve been reporting, your ballot for the general election includes two local races with an incumbent and challenger – King County Council District 8 and State House 34th District Position 2. We’ve covered them at the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce lunch and at the Alki Community Council meeting. This Wednesday, they’re expected at the Morgan Community Association quarterly meeting – Mary Anito and Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon in the State House race, Nick Duda and Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda in the King County race. It’s at 7 pm Wednesday at The Kenney (7125 Fauntleroy Way SW); the agenda also includes updates on ongoing issues including public safety, preparedness, the park expansion, and the EV-charging station.

WEST SEATTLE HALLOWEEN: ‘The Last Resort Hotel’

Less than two weeks until Halloween, and we are continuing to highlight decorations. Tonight, Lacey tells us her “Last Resort Hotel” has arrived for the season:

We have our Halloween haunt all set up again this year! Lots of things to see by day, and spookier to see at night – we are The Last Resort Hotel. Located just off Roxbury, 9643 18th Ave SW. (If you love the Grinch, you might also know us as Whoville at Christmas!)

Just like last year, we will have the yard open again for trick-or-treating and are also accepting donations for WC Food Bank! We have a full yard walk-through display that will only be open for a few nights. October 30 & 31, 5 pm- 9ish. If the weather is nice, I will also have it open on Saturday, October 24, and I will let the Blog know if I do! That said, there are many decorations to view outside of the yard leading up to Halloween, like The Last Resort Cemetery, where the Gravedigger is keeping an eye on things!

We are welcoming donations for WC Food Bank again and will have a QR code posted and a donation bin available. I will also put a donation bin out in front of my display in the next few days, if people would like to donate unopened food items – look for a black cooler labeled Donations. I will check it regularly.

We have a full yard walk-through display, with lots of hotel “amenities”, like the Witch Way Cafe, Last Gasp Gifts and Doll Parts Daycare. The hotel boasts a cemetery and morgue. Last Resort Coven meetings are currently being held in the witches’ den. Zombies will be there to greet you along the way!

Our theme is very fun! I’m a kid of the ’80s and I would say my display is inspired by old Scooby-Doo episodes, vintage Halloween etc. I love decorating and a lot of the display is handmade by myself, like all of the cemetery fencing, my huge pumpkin king, the mausoleum and spooky well. I have lots of fun with the signage too, it helps to tell the story!

Please come visit us and donate if you can! I have a few regular fans who come visit the display, which I love! I’ve offered a sneak peek to some, so if you see me out in the yard, say hi! I love how much joy it brings people, it inspires me to keep going!

Got – or seen – decorations that others should see too? Photos/tips welcome at westseattleblog@gmail.com or texted to 206-293-6302 – thank you!

BIZNOTE FOLLOWUP: Mashiko’s message on eve of West Seattle closure

After more than 30 years, Mashiko‘s final night in the West Seattle Junction is tomorrow. After that, the Japanese restaurant will be closed until it’s ready to reopen at its new location in White Center. The Mashiko team asked if we’d share their “farewell, West Seattle” message:

To all the amazing people of West Seattle- We want to say goodbye, sort of.

Mariah, our sushi chef and fearless leader has been exclusively working at Mashiko going on 27 years. She has watched West Seattle grow up from her little window on California Ave longer than any of us and was reflecting, “We’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of so many people’s lives. Watching families start and celebrate life has made our careers truly rewarding.” We couldn’t have said it better.

With our relocation we hope to bring the community together and grow our family and friends. If we could have stayed in West Seattle we would have. The White Center community is a growing, vibrant, diverse place truly welcoming of all people and quite a few of us call this community home. Our staff, friends and family will be working hard to build a warm and inviting space to recreate the Mashiko experience; Mashiko Tsugu- ‘to join’. The new location will allow us to grow and create more delicious food.

For now please follow us on our social media accounts if you’re interested in updates on our next chapter.

With love and excitement,
Mariah Kmitta, Alix Yarrow and the outstanding team at Mashiko Tsugu

It’s been almost three months since Mashiko announced the moving plan, a little over one month since disclosing the new location at 9640 16th SW. When will they reopen? Owner/GM Alix told WSB, “We would love to be open by the end of the year, but that’s dependant on how fast permitting moves.”

VIDEO, PHOTOS: Fauntleroy Fall Festival 2026, with new places to explore

(WSB photos)

1:26 PM: If you’ve been to the Fauntleroy Fall Festival in past years, you’ll notice the Fauntleroy Church lot looks different from past years. It’s a new layout because this year it’s all on the church/Y side – and some of what you’ll remember from inside The Hall at Fauntleroy is happening in the church’s Fellowship Hall – right now, participants in the Cake Trot get a chance to win decorated donated cakes:

Back out in the lot, look for the Fauntleroy Community Association’s Great Pumpkin Search booth – this year it’s part of the festival:

Lots more happening and we have more photos to add – see the schedule on the festival website – it’s on until 4 pm at 9140 California SW.

2:09 PM: The festival classics are going full force, like birdhouse-building and pumpkin-painting:

Volunteers like Deb are on hand to joyfully assist you:

And you can again this year get up-close views of birds and bunnies:

Performances are both outdoors and indoors (here again are the schedule and map) – the West Seattle Big Band is playing inside the Fellowship Hall. More coverage to come!

3:27 PM: The Big Band is playing all the way until the festival ends at 4 pm, so if yu’re here, don’t miss them.

Outside, another sizable band – the West Seattle Ukulele Players (video later).

And if someone in your family is still in the mood for pumpkin searching, the FCA says there’s still time – get to their table and get the info! They hid more than 400 and don’t know how many have been found yet, but certainly not all of them. We went to see some of the painted pumpkins, too:

This is all free thanks to donations and volunteering – if you didn’t donate while festival-going, you can find the link on the festival website.
