WHALES! Orcas off West Seattle (PHOTOS ADDED)

(Added: Photo by Stewart L.)

1:38 PM: Orcas are off Constellation Patk, southbound, fairly close to shore, Kersti Muul reports. Let us know if you see them!

2:16 PM: Kersti says they’re now passing Lowman Beach.

2:40 PM: And now, she reports, approaching The Arroyos.

10:50 PM: Tonight Kersti sent some of her photos from the visit, including the scene discussed in the comments – standup paddleboarders who got an incredibly close view:

Kersti followed along by land as the orcas headed south and says they dove for 10 minutes at a time, and the boarders just happened to be there.

She says the passing orcas were T137A (male) and T137B (female) – brother and sister. She adds, “T137A has fully recovered from a horrendous injury he had last year near his tail. It was a big gash that was most likely from a sea lion. He was unable to hunt for himself and he lagged behind his family as they helped him. I’m always happy to see him!”

The T’s are transient orcas, who, unlike the residents, eat sea lions and other marine mammals as well as fish.

I see what looks like an adult and a baby orca just buy the south end of Emma Schmitz overlook

They were super close to shore at Cormorant Cove. Incredible!

The whales were very close to shore at Lowman Beach and quickly moving south.

Close to shore is an understatement. Adult male T137A and female

Saw one come up going southbound in Fauntleroy Cove just south of Lincoln Park about 2:10.  Spectacular!

Just back from Lowman, where we saw a HUGE dorsal just a couple tens of yards offshore!! Closest sighting I’ve had in West Seattle ever! Some paddleboarders got the thrill of a lifetime.

I was out in the group of 3 paddle boarders. Absolutely amazing and so close. Stella the seal looked like she was looking for a place to hide.

Kersti, how close to shore were they and what is the reasoning to be so close if so?

      • Kersti Muul August 29, 2020 (11:32 pm)

They were from 200 yards off shore to 100 at other spots. The tide was out and that is usually when the Transients come in close. They are hunting and there are lots of seals that move inshore when they get wind of them coming. There is also a nice channel around Alki point that they like to travel in. We don’t get this close of a pass very often so for those who got out there today good job!!

WOW! What an awesome moment for these paddle boarders, and great capturing Kersti!

I had a similar experience while kayaking once, never forget the feeling of being so close to such a special being.

OMG! How freaking cool for the paddle boarders.. So jealous.  To be that close to them, just by chance. A memory to last a life time. I would be happy to just actually get to see them from the shore.. lol They always swim by when I can’t get down there.  One day, Orcas… ONE DAY!!…

The look on the paddle boarder’s faces says it all. One with pure joy, one with pure shock. So awesome!
