Update: Car off 1st Avenue S. bridge ramp, driver in hospital

11:32 PM: Just outside West Seattle, a driver is reported to be seriously hurt after her vehicle went off the 1st Avenue South Bridge near/at the Michigan exit.

She’s been taken to the hospital, and Seattle Police‘s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad has been called out. SDOT cameras don’t show any effect on the bridge right now, but if you’re headed that way, on surface streets or the bridge, now you know what’s going on.

12:01 AM: Update from SPD via Twitter: “Preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed a contributing factor to crash. S River St will be completely shut down for about 2 (hours).” Police also say the driver was the only person in the car.

1:55 AM: A bit more information has just been posted on SPD Blotter, including:

… On November 2nd at approximately 10:36 p.m. officers responded to a one-vehicle collision in the 100 block of South River Street. Preliminary investigation indicates that a woman was driving her Honda Accord northbound across the 1st Avenue South Bridge. She entered the Michigan Street off-ramp at what appears to be a high rate of speed, lost control of her car and went over the concrete barrier, landing on South River Street below. The female driver was the sole occupant of her car. There were no other vehicles involved in the collision.

Fire department medics responded to the scene and transported the woman to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening head injuries.

Does anybody know what kind of car it was and the name of the driver?

SPD has just posted a short blotter item with info I’m adding to the story. It describes the car as a Honda Accord. They did not identify the driver and would not at this point (nor would we publish it) – TR

Heard and watched the whole thing from ground level, standing on River Road. One of the most unbelievable and scariest things I’ve ever seen in my life, I was 1 of 4 people to run over to check on and help this girl. I she pulls through, it’s a miracle she survived this long after seeing the impact and after seeing how she looked.

Amazing that she made it out alive!

Excessive or high rate of speed does not always indicate neglect, could have been a medical issue like a heart attack

    Hey All,
The driver is in the hospital and is recovering. She is very lucky to be alive. We are so grateful for those of you who were there and responsed so quickly. Thank you for your swift action and care for her. A thank you as well to the emergency response teams. You all helped save a life. For you who were there, she had a dog in the car at the time of the accident. Did anyone happen to see her dog? I’m sorry, I don’t have specific details about her dog at this time. Thank you all for your prayers.

Not really great news when her dog is apparently missing. Family Friend- will you post info on the dog’s description. I am guessing emergency responders searched the car for her dog?

This young lady is a Miracle! I just spoke to her by phone she is talking and as of right now they don’t see any broken bones. She is a hardworking single Mom who works multiple jobs trying to take care of her kids. I don’t know what caused the accident but I know she is an amazing mother and I am praying for a complete healing! God is able!

We were the car that stopped, mentioned in the 2nd comment. We saw one of the lady first responders, not sure Fire or Police, carrying the dog on a folded black blanket. Not sure where the dog is now, appeared the dog was OK from what we could tell waiting in our car.

Scary night for all of us!

  • SPD Detective Parker November 4, 2013 (7:34 am)

I am the SPD Traffic Collision Detective working on this case. I notice several people that posted on this blog have said they witnessed this collision and/or the driver’s actions before the collision. If you are a witness, please call me at 206-233-0059 so I can gather as many details about what happened as I can. Witnesses are vital to these investigations. Thank you.

We found the dog. Located at a local animal hospital, in great shape. Amazing! Thank you all for the help and prayers.

Sick to death of speeders and aggressive drivers. It’s not just on freeways and arterial roads–people speed down side streets, on ramps, in and out of parking lots.

It makes being a pedestrian around here a risky proposition.

Seattle government priority is revenue generation, not safety. That’s why we have red light cameras and automatic tickets for folks driving 21 mph in a school zone while speeders break laws with impunity.

    ant update on her condition?

Sorry, comment time is over.
