In case you wondered: No fireworks = no July 4th roadblocks

Less than three weeks — already! — till the Fourth of July, and by now you’ve likely heard, no Elliott Bay fireworks. So as not to assume, we doublechecked, while talking today with Southwest Precinct Lt. Steve Paulsen, to be sure that meant no Alki traffic restrictions like last year. He confirmed, that’s indeed the case – no roadblocks planned – but he promised that a special holiday “patrol” will keep close watch on the spots where people will be gathering, even without the Elliott Bay show.

Beware of SPD’s 4th of July speed trap on the Spokane Street Viaduct. Eastbound at the old 4th Avenue on ramp.

If the cost of one fireworks show weren’t a multiple of our annual revenue, I would so love to do that. We’re doing well but not THAT well. I’d say everyone’s invited to our backyard for sparklers, but (a) they’re not technically legal (even if we buy them in White Center) and (b) the buddleias ate the entire back yard and are now trying to come in through the patio door. So we’ll probably hover on Alki and squint at sections of whatever’s visible behind Queen Anne from the Lake U show.

How about using the police that usually are on Alki to help the neighborhoods around and on route to Alki to help with the onslaught that will be heading to Alki regardless of the firework display? Every year Admiral district pays a price due to the lack of signage directing people to the beach. We have offered to pay for said signage yet still have no support for SDOT. We have safety concerns for our families. The traffic during summer is dangerous and hostile.

You can see quite abit of the Lake Union fireworks from anywhere along Alki. The high-flyin’ fireworks, anyway.
Won’t be the same without Ivar’s extravaganza, though.
How about it some of you larger Puget Sound companies?
Join forces, band together and put on the Elliot Bay show?

Sorry, comment time is over.
