SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: Whale off Alki

4:42 PM: Thanks to the texter who reports seeing a lone whale – bigger than an orca, they believe – headed west along Alki, off Anchor/Luna Park a little while ago. We’re not seeing any other reports of what’s in the area, but earlier this week heard about at least one lone dolphin/porpoise sighting. So let us know if you see it too! (And if you’re an orca fan… remember The Whale Trail‘s Orca Talk in just a few hours – details in our preview.)

5:48 PM: More sightings reported in comments – but no confirmed ID yet.

    Hi there,

I saw it as well.  I called it in to the Seal sitters phone number.  I watched it head down Alki towards the point. Beautiful site!

Saw it from Alki Ave near Bonaire. Lost sight of it while it was heading towards the lighthouse. I am not any sort of specialist, but my guess is it was a Minke whale.

I saw it near Marination Ma Kai on Monday around 5:30pm. Definitely not an orca.

My friend and I saw it heading southwest from Alki pretty close in to the sea wall, then again from Constellation Park, continuing south, around 4:30. It must have turned north again. Definitely not an Orca. Maybe a humpback.

I was able to shoot some video on my phone late yesterday afternoon of the large whale near shore and also some orcas in the distance. My friend and I thought the large whale might have been a gray whale. Very exciting!

Sorry, comment time is over.
