vortex2.71MemberI want to get an iPhone soon, but want to check how AT&T Wireless service quality is in West Seattle before I commit. I have Verizon right now and find it to be great except for on the Beach at Alki. I’d be interested to hear from a few AT&T subscribers as to how the West Seattle coverage is. Particularly, how is it close to the High Point Library? I know that most places have refund policies if we don’t like it, but I’d really rather not bother with the trouble. So, is AT&T as good as Verizon? Thanks for your help.

CountingCoupMemberThere have been a couple of discussion about this on the WSF in the past, you might check them out…

christopherboffoliParticipantI have used my iPhone with AT&T service all over West Seattle for years and I’ve never had any service issues with voice or data.

WSBKeymasterWe use an iPhone extensively for the site – including news updates on WSB and Twitter – from all over the place, every day. I discovered a new place last night that it didn’t work too well – northern Pigeon Point. Other than that, the only trouble I ever have is right around Duwamish Head, rounding the bend toward Alki.
Funny you mention Verizon, though. I have a Verizon aircard that I also use extensively with the laptop while working remotely at meetings, events, breaking news, etc., and it is almost flawless – except for the Highland Park Improvement Club building, in which the signal is almost nil.

KenParticipantI am near Highpoint Library and it works fine now.
I used cingular before the merger and when they started leasing space on the local AT&T towers (03?) they filled in the low signal spots and I could even use it in my basement. My house is plaster and lathe with wire used as a plaster support on several walls. This blocks weak signals. I have a strong signal now.
Also note AT&T down town is strong enough to work in elevators in some building.
There are still a few low signal spots in WS though since it is a series of ridges and valleys it takes a lot more towers to cover every spot than it would a flat terrain.

SmittyParticipantMy wife and I both have ATT (she an iphone and me a blackberry). The only place I ever have trouble is driving over the bridge – which is where I am usually trying to make a call – and a little spot near Barnecut’s on Admiral.
Other than that, it has been good for us all over (north) West Seattle.
BTW – iPhones ROCK!

dhgParticipantYep. So far as I know, T_Mobile still blows and won’t work in Fauntleroy (my info is dated, ‘tho) but Cingular put in towers that worked here, then they became AT&T so I’m happy with their service in West Seattle.

CMPParticipantI switched to AT&T one month ago after being with T-Mobile for nine years. TMO could be spotty at times and I find the same kind of service with AT&T. I’m totally happy with it and don’t mind dealing with the occasional dropped call since the iPhone is worth it. As Ken mentioned, there are limited cell towers in West Seattle so you’re not going to get perfect service everywhere. I live just south of the Alaska Junction and haven’t had any problems in that area. Los Angeles has questionable coverage though, especially around Beverly Hills.

raindance42MemberI have AT&T and can vouch for great coverage all up and down Delridge and in the Westwood Village area. The only place I’ve noticed I lose coverage is going down the hill to Highway 509.

JiggersMemberIs there a universal wireless connection available so you aren’t limited to using a businesses connection?

vortex2.71MemberGreat, thanks for the beta everyone. Much appreciated!

DuckitudeMemberIt all depends on what your needs are or where you use your phone the most. For us along south Beach Drive SW up against the east hill in the Fauntleroy area, the only service that works without having to walk across the street or out into Lowman Beach Park seems to be Verizon. I used to have Cingular and it worked great until ATT took it over and changed the towers that were being used. Verizon has been flawless.

mlfryeMemberI have AT&T and my hubby has Verizon. At our house in Admiral, my reception is MUCH better than his. He went to the V store recently and they acknowledged that they have a hole in WS (and it is very bad in Admiral)…

LisaMParticipantI loose coverge in the Belevdere area (between Barnecutts and Hanford) usually comes back about halfway down the Admiral hill. At my home by the PCC, it is fine. Also, have dropped calls heading up the hill from Alki on California – pretty much till I get home.

JiggersMemberI’m finding out that Wi-Fi sucks. So far, every establishment that I’ve been to that has wireless, their connection always craps out when I’m trying to email or do something important. I have to always ask them to reboot their system. It’s a pain in the arse.

WorldCitizenParticipantI have an iPhone and AT&T. I lived on Alki and 53rd. Almost every call dropped after a minute or so. The other problem was over the West Seattle Bridge and going down the hill east on Admiral toward the bridge. Everywhere else is fine so far through two years of AT&T.
December 22, 2009 at 8:50 pm #683654
WorldCitizenParticipantHere’s a tip. Even though 3G doesn’t deal with calls, if you have 3G enabled on your iPhone and you go out of a 3G coverage area while still having “full bars” your call will be dropped. If you know you’re going to be in a spotty area for a while (Alki) then disable your 3G and you lose way fewer calls.
