seattlesparkleParticipantHas anyone had any experience or advice re: http://www.nextdoor.com? I have seen this in the news several times and wonder if it is catching on in this area.

JanSParticipantwe’ve had a membership since the beginning of it…Admiral District Central. Frankly, it’s not used very much, I think because if anything is happening re:crime, etc., it’s on WSB. Some use it every now and then if they want a referral for something or are looking for something, and want suggestions. We only have 52 members (49 households, 3% of the households in this particular neighborhood boundaries. I suppose you could say it is what you make of it.

anonymeParticipantI briefly belonged to the one in my neighborhood, but dropped it. I don’t trust it; they periodically offer prizes, etc., and I don’t understand how they could do that without selling information. While you can opt out of having your surname and address displayed, your location is still shown on a map. Anyone paying attention could glean personal information from the site. It also quickly devolved into a neighborhood bitchfest, creating animosity where there was none before. Kinda defeats the purpose.
Not every neighborhood has a WSB, but I can’t see why you’d ever need both, as the WSB is so far superior in so many ways.

trickycooljParticipantHigh Point has been using it for a few months now! It’s been really helpful! What was happening was the HOAs could only email blast their respective owners and SHA could only e mail blast their renters and we had no way to communicate as neighbors together. There was a lot of miscommunication happening in some neighborhood facebook groups over the summer with some issues we were having at night in the parks so the High Point Stakeholder groups found Nextdoor.com to be a good way to get everyone involved and talking to each other. There have been posts about events happening at Neighborhood House, missing pets, suspicious activities, selling furniture, confirming power outages, announcing the school boundary changes, etc. I think it’s been a very helpful way to get in touch with the immediate neighbors on my street since not everyone uses facebook/twitter and who ever looks at mass emailings? For me, it’s been an overall positive experience! I like using WSB for overall West Seattle items but things that are specific to my street don’t necessarily belong here.

JanSParticipantanonyme, that’s very interesting. I don’t believe our group has ever been included in those emails offering prizes.I started our group back when nextdoor was in it’s infancy, and I do not remember ever receiving something like that, except for maybe expanding membership. And now, we can even tap into our neighboring neighborhoods if needed. No one abuses it…as I said…not used very often…
