AshleyMemberGoing to Lincoln City Oregon for the weekend with my boyfriend. Any destinations recommended by anyone?? Thanks!! So Excited!
August 29, 2008 at 4:20 am #636100
JenVMemberOMG YES YES YES!!! We go to Lincoln City a few times a year. you MUST go visit Aunt Mary’s Filthy on 14th and 101- BEST vegetarian food ever, and a totally funky space..and Mary is wonderful. For good stiff drinks and awesome locals karaoke, try Maxwells. The food is not great, but the bar scene more than makes up for it. Where are you staying in LC? Oh, and there are great little art glass shops all up and down 101 in the main area of town….and the outlet mall…and … and… and… can you tell I love Lincoln City? It is honestly the best town on the coast by far. HAVE A GREAT TIME!!

jMemberTry to drive south to visit Depot Bay (about a 10 minute drive). It’s amazing to watch fishing boats go in and out of a tiny little opening in the rock. There are cute shops down there too. The Sea Haag also has never let us down for food.

JoBParticipantTry to drive even farther and visit Newport.
Chowder at the original moes with the garage door in front is a must… and if you go early enough or stay late enough you can have either breakfast or dinner at the whale’s tale… some of the best food on the coast.
it and moes are institutions…
August 29, 2008 at 5:01 am #636103
JenVMemberyou know, I never really understood the whole Mo’s thing…I just never thought their chowder was that great – I guess I am spoiled by the Charlestown. that being said, in Newport the Rogue Brew pub is GREAT – very innovative food and really good beer. then you can head over to the Wax Museum….and Ripley’s Museum.

AshleyMemberHey everyone thanks for the suggestions!! We are staying at the Inn at the Inn at Spanish Head. We probably should have checked out the recommendations first because there are some bad ones but we’ll make the best of it! Sweet!! I am so excited!
August 29, 2008 at 5:15 am #636105
JoBParticipantJenV..
it isn’t just the chowder.. it’s sitting in Moes with the communal tables and the garage door open…
and maybe it’s the memory of moe placing that emergency candle in the middle of a bowl of chowder and lighting it for my 25th birthday… the entire room sang to me.
it was like eating at mom’s.. and still is for me.
Whales Tale is about the food. Someone bought it but it began as a communal bakery/restaurant .. and yes, that is part of my personal history too.. tho i wasn’t there long.
however. the poppyseed pancakes and the fisherman’s stew and the chocolate mouse with raspberries in a dark chocolate box are still to die for…
and i don’t think there is much too equal the drive they still call the 20 miracle miles.. from lincoln city to newport

DunnoParticipantI’ll 2nd the Sea Hag in Depot Bay, but only for a cocktail in the bar where the Hag sometimes plays the bottles. Across the street on high tide stormy days theres the blow hole, and Devils Punchbowl between Lincoln City and Newport.
At the D River, shortest in the world is Mr. Lee’s, good Chinese food at low prices. Also at the D river check out the cool kites. We always seem to make it over to the Winds Casino, not really my thing. I love Roads End, on low tides walking around the north point and checking out the tidal pools. In Taft, the most southern part of Lincoln City, check out next to Mo’s the cool park with Seals on the sand just across the water.
Very romantic spot for a cocktail, the Inn At Spanish Head. I’ve spent a lot of time in Lincoln city.
Newport has a really good aquarium, where Keiko the Killer whale was held before being realeased.

JenVMemberso Ashley – all the places I mentioned are North of where you are staying. There is a great place within walking distance of you- called the Roadhouse, of all things. :) The Spanish Head is very nice, and very romantic. My fave hotel there is the Seahorse – try that next time- it is right at the beach access on 21st.

JoBParticipantAshley..
the thing about the inn at spanish head is the view.. and it doesn’t get better than that.. no matter what the weather does… and the nearly private beach because of the lack of access both north and south of it…
the sunsets there are incredible.
if you appreciate what it is, you won’t be disappointed…
but i would eat somewhere else:)

JoBParticipantthis is making me so homesick for the oregon beach…
ashley.. if you can take the time going home.. drive up the oregon coast… it’s an incredible drive.
August 29, 2008 at 5:39 am #636110
JanSParticipantya know, we always went farther south to Yachats…funky little B & B’s, cabins, that sort of thing…and the best(ahem – secluded) beaches around. And always went for a spin on the dunes in Florence…has been years since I’ve been down the coast :(
August 29, 2008 at 5:48 am #636111
AshleyMemberYay!! I am very excited and will let you know how it goes! We leave Saturday! Thanks so much everyone!

AshleyMemberAugust 29, 2008 at 5:49 am #636113
DunnoParticipantI’ll second Yachats, but about 75 miles south of Lincoln City. My whole Seattle family will be in Lincoln City for my Aunts memorial. My 1st cousin and her husband own the Otis Cafe, just a few miles before you get to Lincoln City. They have the best German Potato dish in the world and serve a fantastic breakfast. It’s well worth the stop, you can thank me later. Warning, the Potato dish is big enough for 3.

wundrgrrrlParticipantJust got back last night from 5 days at Depoe Bay, about 10 miles south of Lincoln City! There are alot of gray whales hanging out along the coast there, so be sure to stop at the view point just before the town of Depoe Bay :) Take the binoculars! I’m jealous… want to go back already…
August 29, 2008 at 6:13 am #636115
JenVMemberDunno, we’re headed down there for Thanksgiving- we’ll be sure to stop in at the Otis Cafe! I was just in LC a month ago, and all this talk is making me “homesick” too….
August 29, 2008 at 3:15 pm #636116
DunnoParticipantOne more big thing. Watch you speed!!! The speed limit after Portland changes about a 1,000 times. All these towns including Lincoln City make a fortune from out of towners.
My crew’s leavin today!
August 29, 2008 at 3:29 pm #636117
WSMomParticipantI want to also mention the wonderful stay my husband and I had this summer at the Overleaf Lodge in Yachats! Wonderful spa! Quiet lovely and relaxing. The morning breakfast is beyond compare. We can’t wait to go back.
I love the Oregon Coast!
August 29, 2008 at 3:42 pm #636118
JoBParticipantI think it’s really cool that so many of you share my passion for the Oregon Coast… and got so far south as yachats…
i know what beaches you’re talking about JanS ;0
there is one between yachats and the dunes that you literally have to know is there. a dedicated group cuts a path through the brambles to the beach every year.
what a place to sunbathe
August 29, 2008 at 6:35 pm #636119
ZenguyParticipantThis brings back such wonderful family vacations in a conversion van, listening to Willie Nelson’s Stardust on 8 track, signing along.
August 29, 2008 at 8:52 pm #636120
JoBParticipanti played billy joel and tom waits and it was an rx-7 instead of a conversion van… but my kids still sing along:)
August 31, 2008 at 2:54 am #636121
LooMemberZenGuy – I’ve been trying to talk my husband into getting a conversion van because all of my fond memories as a kid! I remember listening to Willie Nelson, too (grew up in Texas). We don’t have kids, yet, but a van is totally in my vacation planning when we have a family. Ha.
Also – thanks, everyone, for giving a few travel tips. We’ve never made it down to the Oregon coast, and it helps to know some places to check out.
August 31, 2008 at 3:29 pm #636122
DunnoParticipantMy #1 favorite thing about the Oregon Coast.
Best golf in the World. Bandon Dunes courses,
Salishan, and many other smaller fun courses.
But there are many other things to do that are free on the coast that make it a very worthy vacation.
