s glassMemberLast weekend, along with about 20 other drivers, I received a $47 parking citation for parking on Walnut Ave between Forest and Lander, on the West side, adjacent Hiawatha Park, a Frisbee toss from the wading pool. I paid the ticket but I’m angry about it. There are only two tiny (11 inch square) signs about 150 feet apart for an entire city block. They say nothing. They’re only the letter P with a slash through it, posted on nearby trees, not on signs clearly visible at the street. There is no paint on the curb. The street is not as narrow as many surrounding streets. It’s by a park in a residential section. There is no expectation that is might be a No Parking area. I counted 10 ticketed cars along the short stretch when I got my ticket. When I came back with a camera to build a case against the city, there were 10 more cars ticketed. This tells me it is a signage problem. Clearly, a lot of people don’t see these tiny little signs. Sadly, I don’t have the time to fight the city, to go to their little hearing. But I’m mad enough to rant about it here. Anyone else experience this unhappy little momeymaker for the city?

2krazy4wordsParticipantwow! I wonder if those are new? people ALWAYS park there – if it’s where I’m thinking (I’ve done housing for a friend on Walnut right across from the park). next time I drive by, I’ll have to take a closer look.

JanSParticipantI drove by there on parade day, and was surprised to see all the people who ignored the signs (which I noticed right away). There are also signs on Lander (so maybe I’m just used to seeing them) near the tennis courts that people ignore all the time… that say “no parking west of here”, which means from 42nd west to Calif. Ave, on the park side. The signs are ignored all the time. Yes, there are only 2 signs, but I don’t think the city has to put up signs every 5 feet. I’m sorry tickets were issued, esp. since it was parade day. It’s happened to me in other places a couple of times.

mtnfreakParticipantWhile I haven’t always agreed with them, I’ve emailed SDOT a couple of times about other issues and I’ve always gotten a prompt response. I can find anywhere a description of how often parking signage needs to be visible (i.e. how close signage must be), but there’s a bunch of information here: http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/parking/parkingregs.htm
I would email SDOT and ask – it can’t hurt!

KBearParticipantI second the SDOT suggestion. I contacted them about a spot where I felt a no-parking sign was missing, and they came out and installed one there.

s glassMemberJanS: I totally get that signs every few feet would be overkill, but you brought up the perfect comparison. On Lander, by the courts, across from Safeway, it’s very obvious. The signage there gives more than fair notice. On far-less-commercial Walnut, the two little signs, with no text, just doesn’t seem like enough for the space — especially on a busy day when lots of parked cars on both sides of the street obscure the two little signs. arrrghhhh!@#&!
