I am sincerely interested in this job but to be honest with you I have no experience being a bartender. I do know craft beer because I do brew beer and I have been brewing for over two years. I do have experience with accounting and book keeping. I am dedicated person and a quick learner. Feel free to call me 425 344 6465

Kyle, please do not take this the wrong way. I am just trying to offer some unsolicited advice. Do not hold your breath for a call. You might get lucky but in general if someone posts an ad that specifically asks you to apply for a position and provides a link it is not a great idea to put the burden of contact back on the person that is looking for someone. They will likely have many applicants and the idea is always to make their job search as painless as possible. It also shows that you can follow directions.

In addition, you need to highlight your strengths (without telling lies) and not focus on the areas in which you lack experience.

Lastly, if this is indeed your attempt to establish contact you might want to proofread before you post. You indicate “I am dedicated person and a quick learner.” You left out a key “a.” It’s not fair, but there are hiring managers that immediately toss any applications that have typos – there are plenty of applications that don’t and it is one way to weed out those that do not pay attention to detail.

I hope you took time to apply and wish you luck in your hunt.

I used to bartend myself. How did you think my screename jiggers came here? Anyways, I prefer to be on the otherside of the bar sucking them down..:)

I hope you find the right person that gives great service..

2MW…it may have been more tasteful to contact Kyle privately to offer your advice, rather than “school” him so publicly.

I applaud Whine’s thoughtful post and think it’s good advice for all [presumably] inexperienced job searchers. Nearly every time I see a job posting here someone either posts that they’re interested instead of contacting the employer directly, or someone else asks on behalf of everyone for contact information which is occasionally missing but usually easy to find. If I were an employer I would certainly be more interested in the person who showed diligence and resourcefulness to get their resume to me.

Thanks Bears, That is an option I could have explored but then how could I unintentionally come across as “holier than thou?” I’ve rarely been accused of being tasteful so why start now?

But seriously, I only meant to offer advice to Kyle and others from the perspective of someone that has reviewed thousands of job apps and interviewed many people over the years. With the job market being what it is, hiring managers often receive hundreds of applications for a single position and will often have to narrow down the interviews to three or four of those applicants. I admittedly do not know if that’s the case in bartending positions but in my experience if I have 200 applications from qualified prospective employees sitting in front of me there is zero chance that I would take the effort to call a person that posted on a forum with a sincere interest but limited qualifications and hadn’t taken the time to apply as requested.

Nothing would thrill me more than to find out that Kyle had applied and was given an interview and was offered the opportunity to do something he loves! I’d gladly be his first customer as I would appreciate his insight on the finer points of brew. Love me a nice IPA.

    All your words…not mine….

however…you had a choice. One, you admit to offering unsolicited advice.

So here’s my take…there is a small divide between bullying and and unsolicited advice. You had an opportunity to contact the OP privately to #1…ask if your unsolicited advice was welcome….or #1….even better…Act as a POSITIVE mentor rather than publicly degrade someone.

ok…so squareeyes came out and applauded your efforts…and I want to say that I don’t disagree with you, and while the points you were making were spot on…but…..

pointing them out publicly is bullying. yes, it’s a new PC term, but bullying doesn’t just happen between kids. And i realize you didn’t mean it that way, but it rather being negative publicly….you could have served positively as a mentor…publicly.

So yes, you have a choice to be tasteful or not. Think of it this way. You don’t really know Kyle’s age. So your reply could have read this way….”your grammar sucks so much no employer will respond to you”…..and “posting your negatives will never get you employed”….which I’m agreeing with you issues. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. In this case, rather that coming across as a bully, you had…and still have an opportunity to contact Kyle and be a positive/mentor in his live, rather than just point out why he will be a failure.

    BearsChick..

contacting the OP privately now requires going through the editors to secure contact information…

and once accomplished will educate only the OP.

JoB…not true. Kyle left his phone number in his post. Contacting him privately was an option from the start.

Wow! I was trying to display a little humility with the holier than thou comment. Nothing more

    I am not a bully.

If you’re so interested in mentoring someone you call him. I jotted a few notes onto a blog so If The OP didn’t get a call he might have some idea why. End of story. I do not want to be his mentor and at no point did I say his grammer sucked or he’d never get employed by posting negatives. That was you.

I can only think the OP is sitting back enjoying our little, pointless bicker fest and wondering how his harmless post sparked two people that don’t know him or each other to “speak” to each other in a way they’d probably never dream of face to face. Ah, the power of the internet.

Kyle was not the OP, Skylark was. Skylark specifically said “A passion for the live local music scene is required! Please include cover letter with your resume explaining why you want to work here. Submit here: http://jobs.schedulefly.com/post-974.aspx”

pretty clear to me. Kyle should have followed instructions, period. That’s what you do when replying to a job listing. Never expect a potential employer to contact you, just by giving your phone number, especially when you have just stated you have no experience at all. TMW was spot on, in my humble opinion.

This is silly. I don’t really see how BearsChick publicly calling out 2MuchWhine is any different than 2MuchWhine calling out Kyle.

FWIW, I know the owners of Skylark. They are probably too busy running their bar to follow up on these posts, and they’d probably agree with 2MuchWhine.

And let me just bring this back to the original topic by saying that Skylark is a fantastic place to work! There’s a really great, supportive family vibe to the place and everyone who works there is top notch. I can’t wait to have a delicious bloody mary from whomever is lucky enough to get this job.

    What Lindsey said.

Guys – the Jobs section is now the third most read part of the site and far, far away the single most viewed section of the Forum. As always we err on the side of credibility. While 2MW had some good points we do need to keep these posts to the topic – the job listing.

Therefore I’m closing this one and here’s hoping Jessie finds a master mixologist.
