celeste17ParticipantHi Garold,
I hope you do move to WS its a nice community. Going to work at 7 you should be okay getting to I-5 south. A little later and you will be sitting in traffic until you get past the 99 exit. As for coming home you will be sitting in some traffic at the top of the West Seattle Freeway (it gets bogged down at the top trying to turn onto 35th. This lasts to about 6:30. Let us know if you are coming and we will block the way! :)

MrJTMemberGarold – I commuted to Federal Way. If you are across the bridge by 7:15am it’s speed limit all the way. The trip home can be a bit tougher, often 5 NB will start backing up about Michigan with the merge from NB Albro/Swift making things a bit sticky, but rarely real bad. an alternate to the evening mess is 599 NB at Tukwila to West Marginal.
Overall a pretty stress free commute.

OliverMemberDepending on where you live in West Seattle, the reverse commute to King County is not bad. My husband commuted to Renton and Auburn for several years. We live in Gatewood, which puts you close to the south back-roads (avoiding the bridge and I-5 until farther south when the downtown traffic is not an issue). Try 509 to 518, which turns in to 405. But it also depends on what part of Kent you are going to. If going farther south in Kent, you could also try 599 to I-5 and get off at Kent-Des Moines road. Traffic usually wasn’t much of an issue for my husband, about 30 minutes to and from Auburn leaving at around 7:30 am and 5pm. The best decision, though, was to get a TDI ’cause the gas ain’t cheap.

kamranistanMemberHi Garold!
I also live in West Seattle, toward Delridge. I work in Kent too and after a few weeks I discovered a 23 minute route to East Hill,Kent. There is never any traffic. You just need to jump on to Highway 99 South through a neighborhood road. From 99 South get on I-5 for a mile. Take the exit for 405 South and I think you know the rest.
Let me know if you need more specific directions. The neighborhood road you take to 99S is 23rd ave via Delridge Way.
Its not on Mapquest.

DBurnsParticipantHighland Park to 509 or 99 South! Either one will get you southbound quite quickly during the 7am hour – avoid the bridge and I-5 would be my timesaving two-cents! :)
Really, HP is convenient from anywhere in WS , you just have to know how to get there. but if you are buying a house you will most likely find Home Depot and it’s just a hop, skip & a jump from there!!
We accidently got off of I-5 onto the West Seattle Bridge in 1997 and never left… we love WS!

celeste17ParticipantWhen I worked at the Airport I found a half a different ways to get home without having to get on I-5. So getting from Kent should be just as easy.

WSBKeymasterMy new favorite shortcut to get to the freeway that goes to Burien and then Sea-Tac and then 405 or 5 (had to use it Monday to get to Olympia) is Thistle all the way to 16th, right on 16th to one of the last streets before Roxbury – Henderson maybe – turn left, go down to 8th, right on 8th, get onto Roxbury from 8th, heading left down the hill to the freeway. Avoids the often-tangled intersection at Delridge/16th/Roxbury (which is still at least better than taking 35th to Roxbury, lots more lights).

datamuseParticipantAnother one for 599 here. I live in Highland Park so it’s super convenient for me, but there’s NEVER any traffic. I commute to Tacoma and it’s pretty stress free.

biankatParticipantI live in Ocean View/Arbor Heights and work a couple blocks south of Kent Station. Takes me 30 minutes @ 7:00. I drive through Burien to get to 518, then take I-5 south to 516. The trip home @ 4:30 is the same, just in reverse. Same amount of time.

rockergirlMemberHey Garold – Hope you decide to move here – maybe you could carpool with biankat. I have been carpooling for over a year to Bellevue and love that I only drive part of the time. I registered on http://www.rideshareonline.com/ and foufn 2 people who live and work near me and we share the driving. Saves me time, money and stress of driving every day. Good luck.

dawsonctParticipantThe real shame is that biankat works near Kent station, yet has no real convenient way to use Sounder as a commuting option.

We should get over the notion in our region that the commute conforms to the standard 9-5, M-F schedule of old, with everyone working in Seattle and sleeping in Bellevue.

thansenMemberI live in Westwood area and work in Renton. I take a few tricky back roads that get to me 509/518/405 and I’m to work in under 20 minutes. The drive to Kent would be very easy at 7:00am

GaroldMemberThanks for the very useful replies, everyone! Anything under an hour is an improvement over my current commute so this is sounding more and more like the place for us.
